Meta partners with sports eyewear brand Oakley to launch AI-powered glasses

Meta said on Friday it has teamed up with Oakley to release AI-powered smart glasses, expanding its push into wearable tech after the success of Ray-Ban Meta glasses.
The social media company is expanding its partnership with Oakley and Ray-Ban-parent EssilorLuxottica amid growing consumer interest in AI-powered wearable devices.
Meta has sold millions of Ray-Ban Meta glasses since their launch and said its "Oakley Meta HSTN" will feature a hands-free high-resolution camera, open-ear speakers, water resistance and Meta AI capabilities.
The limited-edition product will be available for preorder starting July 11 at $499, with additional products starting at $399 launching later this summer.
Meta said the product line would roll out in North America, Australia and several European countries, with plans to expand to Mexico, India and the United Arab Emirates by the year-end.
The Oakley Meta HSTN will debut this month at several major sporting events including Fanatics Fest and UFC International Fight Week.
Smaller rival Snap said earlier this month it would launch its smart glasses, called Specs, for consumers next year. Companies such as Google are also exploring similar investments.

Ahead of the summit, Trump clarified that the United States should not be required to meet the same 5% GDP defence-spending target he demands of NATO allies, as per reports by Politico. Despite the push for increased budgets, many NATO states still fall short of fulfilling capability commitments. Rutte has also warned, as per BBC, that Russia could attack a NATO country within five years. The BBC reports that the summit has been carefully tailored to avoid confrontation with President Trump. The final communiqué has been shortened to five paragraphs and the main discussions limited to three hours—moves interpreted by some analysts as efforts to accommodate Trump's preferences and preserve Alliance cohesion. Mark Rutte, seen as having a cordial relationship with Trump, is reportedly seeking to give the US President a win on defense spending while avoiding deeper rifts over trade, Russia, and Middle East conflicts. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will attend the summit dinner but will not participate in the main North Atlantic Council discussions. Though Russia's war in Ukraine remains one of the gravest threats to European security, discussions on Ukraine and Russia have reportedly been excluded to avoid tensions with the US delegation. Kurt Volker, former US ambassador to NATO, told the BBC: The US 'does not see Ukrainian security as essential to European security, but our European allies do.' Dutch authorities have launched the largest security operation in the country's history, as per BBC, for what will be NATO's most expensive summit to date, with a reported budget of €183.4 million ($210 million). The country's budget deficit stood at 9.3 per cent at the end of last year, making it the highest in the European Union, AFP reported. In a press conference last week, Bolojan said Romania was 'in a complicated situation', adding that the incoming government would have to resort to 'unpopular measures' that could include cutting public spending and imposing tax rises. Meanwhile, Political scientist Sergiu Miscoiu told AFP that Bolojan was 'the person best placed to take unpopular measures to tackle the serious budget crisis'. However, analysts also point out that apart from a brief time as interim president, he had 'no experience in national politics'. Apart from this, deep social divisions in the nation were also made clear by the controversies that surrounded the presidential election. According to Cristian Andrei, a Bucharest-based political consultant, the new government will face the challenge of reaching a longer-term consensus over already delayed state reforms. 'There is only a disputed agreement on very short-term measures for the economic and budget crisis,' the political consultant told The Associated Press. 'If the short-term measures come with a social cost, inflation … (and) will not be met by profound changes in policies and institutions, then the political crisis will loom over the next years and (future) elections," he furthered. According to Euro News, his government is expected to be comprised of the leftist Social Democratic Party, or PSD, the PNL, the reformist Save Romania Union party, and the small ethnic Hungarian UDMR party. Ahead of his nomination, the PSD has pushed for a power-sharing agreement that would see a rotation of the prime ministerial post. While speaking after being nominated for the prime ministerial position, Bolojan said he's 'fully aware of the great responsibility' the role will bring and acknowledged it 'will not be an easy undertaking.' 'I will pursue three priorities: to restore order to the country's finances, to work toward good governance that creates conditions for development in Romania, and … to show proper respect to the Romanian people," he furthered. While the far-right parties recently won a third of the parliament seats, they were kept out of the talks to form a new government. Defeated presidential candidate labelled the move as 'a disgrace and an insult'. Meanwhile, the European Union has voiced concerns over the rise of Eurosceptic parties in NATO member Romania that are opposed to sending military aid to Ukraine. Facebook-parent Meta considered acquiring Perplexity AI before its multi-billion-dollar investment in Scale AI , a report claims. This development comes as Apple is also reportedly pursuing an acquisition of the AI startup led by Desi CEO Aravind Srinivas . According to a report by CNBC, sources familiar with the confidential negotiations, who requested anonymity, stated that a deal between Meta and Perplexity AI was never finalised. One individual noted the discussions were "mutually dissolved," while another indicated that Perplexity chose to walk away from the potential acquisition. Meta's move to acquire Perplexity comes amidst its CEO Mark Zuckerberg 's continued push to advance the company's AI capabilities as competition from OpenAI and Google-parent Alphabet grows. How Meta is pushing harder to lead the AI race As per the CNBC report, Zuckerberg is increasingly concerned that competitors are ahead in both core AI models and consumer apps, prompting Meta to pursue top AI talent aggressively. Following a multibillion-dollar investment, Meta now holds a 49% stake in Scale AI, though it has no voting rights. As part of the deal, Scale AI founder Alexandr Wang and a few team members will join Meta. Earlier this year, Meta also attempted to acquire Safe Superintelligence , reportedly valued at $32 billion during an April funding round. Daniel Gross, the CEO of Safe Superintelligence, and former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman will now contribute to Meta's AI projects under Wang. Gross and Friedman also run a venture capital firm, NFDG, in which Meta is expected to acquire a stake as well. Recently, at the 'Uncapped' podcast, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman revealed that Meta had tried to poach OpenAI staff by offering signing bonuses up to $100 million, with even higher annual compensation packages. 'I've heard that Meta thinks of us as their biggest competitor. Their current AI efforts have not worked as well as they have hoped, and I respect being aggressive and continuing to try new things,' Altman said on the podcast.
