Arm CEO warns on US export restrictions to China: ‘If you narrow access to technology…'

Arm CEO
Rene Haas has joined a growing list of tech leaders, including
Nvidia
's Jensen Huang warning against the impact of US export restrictions on China. For those unaware, the US imposed a new rule in April that banned exports of
advanced data centre chips
to China. Speaking at the Founders Forum Global conference in Oxford on Thursday, June 12, Haas said that the controls could hinder global technological progress and harm both companies and consumers. In the interview with Bloomberg, he said 'If you narrow access to technology and you force other ecosystems to grow up, it's not good'. 'It makes the pie smaller, if you will. And frankly, it's not very good for consumers,' he added.
Hass's comments echoed Nvidia's Huang who last month warned that US companies are losing ground while Chinese firms like Huawei gain strength. 'The Chinese competitors have evolved,' Huang then said. 'Huawei has become quite formidable.'
What the US export rules say
The latest rules targeted Nvidia's H20 chip — the main product the company had specifically designed to meet earlier US regulatory requirements.

Under the new regulations, even chips like the H20, which were previously cleared for sale in China, are now restricted because they still offer computing power considered too advanced. The U.S. government has said the measures aim to prevent China's military from accessing cutting-edge AI technology.
Semiconductor executives worry that the US policy of limiting chip exports could backfire. Critics argue that such bans will push China to rapidly build its own tech industry, weakening the position of US companies globally. The curbs have cost Nvidia an estimated $8 billion in revenue this quarter alone.
What Nvidia says
Nvidia had said that the new export controls would impact its business significantly, warning of a $5.5 billion hit to revenue. Despite these setbacks, Nvidia continues to explore ways to maintain its presence in the Chinese market while staying within regulatory limits.
As per The Information report, Nvidia has told customers that a sample of the new chip will be available as soon as June. The company is also working on a China-specific version of its latest-generation AI chip, Blackwell.

WhatsApp chats obtained through spy app used as evidence in Divorce case: 5 simple ways to detect spy app installed on your phone
Representative Image (AP Photo/Kiichiro Sato, File) In a recent ruling in a Divorce case, the Madhya Pradesh High Court held that a wife's private WhatsApp chat can be allowed to be presented as evidence under Section 14 of the Family Court Act, 1984 even if they are obtained without her permission. In this case, the husband accessed his wife's private WhatsApp chat via a special app installed on her phone (likely a spy app) without her knowledge and found out that she was having an extra-marital affair. His lawyers decided to present this as evidence in the court and seek divorce on the grounds of cruelty and adultery. The wife's lawyers challenged this move and did not want her WhatsApp chats to be presented to the court, arguing that this action by the husband violated her right to privacy under Article 21 of Constitution of India and Sections 43, 66 and 72 of the Information Technology Act. The Madhya Pradesh High Court rejected this argument and said that even though the right to privacy has been recognized as a fundamental right, the same is not absolute and is subject to exceptions and limitations. Without going into the right or wrong of the judgement, here are 5 simple ways to detect if a spy app is installed on your smartphone. As there may also be cases where a spy app is installed to stalk or for other wrong purposes. Check for Unusual Behavior on your Smartphone Spy apps often consume significant resources, leading to noticeable changes in your phone's performance. Look for these red flags: by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like One of the Most Successful Investors of All Time, Warren Buffett, Recommends: 5 Books for Turning... Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Click Here Undo * Battery Drain: If your battery is depleting faster than usual, even with normal usage, a spy app might be running in the background. Check your battery settings (Settings > Battery on iOS or Android) to see which apps are consuming the most power. * High Data Usage: Spy apps often send data to a remote server, increasing data consumption. Review your data usage in Settings > Network & Internet > Data Usage (Android) or Settings > Cellular (iOS). * Overheating: If your phone feels warm even when idle, it could indicate a hidden app working continuously. * Unusual Sounds or Activity: Hearing static or clicking sounds during calls or seeing apps open/close unexpectedly may suggest monitoring. Review Installed Apps Spy apps may disguise themselves as legitimate apps or hide entirely from your app drawer. To check: Android: Go to Settings > Apps > All Apps and look for unfamiliar apps. Names like 'System Service,' 'Device Health,' or generic terms may be suspicious. Check for apps with excessive permissions, such as access to your camera, microphone, or location, via Settings > Apps > Permissions. Enable 'Show system apps' in the app settings to check for hidden system-level apps. On iPhones On iPhones, apps are harder to hide due to Apple's strict ecosystem. Review all apps on your home screen or in Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Look for configuration profiles (Settings > General > VPN & Device Management) that might have been installed without your knowledge. If you spot an unfamiliar app, search its name online to verify its legitimacy. Avoid deleting suspicious apps immediately, as this could alert the installer. Check for Unauthorised Access or Accounts Spy apps may require an account to send collected data. Check for unfamiliar accounts or logins: Go to Settings > Accounts (Android) or Settings > Passwords (iOS) to review synced accounts. Look for unknown email accounts, cloud services, or messaging apps logged into your device. Check your email for suspicious login notifications or password reset requests. Inspect Permissions and Settings Spy apps often require extensive permissions to function. Review: App Permissions: On Android, go to Settings > Privacy > Permission Manager. On iOS, check Settings > Privacy to see which apps have access to your camera, microphone, or location. Accessibility Settings: Spy apps may exploit accessibility features to monitor your screen. Check Settings > Accessibility (Android) or Settings > Accessibility (iOS) for unfamiliar services. Unknown Sources: On Android, ensure 'Install unknown apps' is disabled (Settings > Apps > Special App Access > Install Unknown Apps). Monitor Network Activity Some spy apps communicate with remote servers. Use a network monitoring tool like Wireshark (advanced users) or check your Wi-Fi router's logs for unusual connections from your phone's IP address.

Report: Public Sector Banks increase market share amid slower credit growth in FY25; regain lending dominance
This is an AI-generated image, used for representational purposes only. Public Sector Banks (PSBs) gained significant market share across lending segments and geographies in FY25 despite overall moderation in bank credit growth, a report by Union Bank of India has revealed. The shift was especially evident in working capital and demand loans, traditionally used by businesses for operational needs, as per news agency ANI. ' Credit growth slowed in FY25 yet PSBs gained market share vis-à-vis PVBs (Private Banks),' the report noted, adding that public sector lenders leveraged their balance sheets more effectively and cautiously, especially as private lenders saw reduced momentum. The Credit-Deposit (CD) ratio of private banks, though elevated due to an earlier credit push, sharply corrected in FY25, indicating a deceleration in fresh disbursements. In contrast, PSBs capitalised on regulatory tightening in the unsecured lending space, particularly targeting retail credit like housing loans, where they emerged as incremental leaders. The report also pointed out a shift in the sectoral distribution of credit. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo Private banks, once dominant in retail disbursements, lost ground due to tighter regulations, allowing PSBs to step in. Remarkably, state-owned banks also posted stronger growth in industrial credit, a segment previously dominated by private lenders. On the geographic front, PSBs saw strong performance in rural and semi-urban areas. Over 60 per cent of incremental credit in semi-urban regions and a significant share in rural belts were secured by public banks. Even in urban and metro areas, where private banks traditionally dominated, PSBs reclaimed some ground lost in FY24. In terms of borrower segmentation, credit to individuals continued its upward trajectory, signalling robust retail banking strength, the report said. The report aligns with broader findings released earlier this month by Boston Consulting Group, which noted that the BFSI sector was undergoing a period of moderate credit growth and profitability pressure. The sector's Net Interest Margins are under pressure amid repo rate cuts and elevated CD ratios, which have intensified the race for low-cost deposits. Despite this, PSU banks posted a 26 per cent year-on-year growth in profit after tax (PAT), outperforming private banks' 8 per cent growth. Deposit growth remained healthy at 11 per cent year-on-year, reaching Rs 229.3 lakh crore, although CASA growth stayed muted. The overall banking sector reported a 12 per cent rise in total net advances and a 13 per cent increase in aggregate credit in FY25, signalling that PSBs' tactical shift and rural resurgence helped them outperform amid macroeconomic headwinds.
