Days of chaos ahead after burst pipe causes evacuation

One of the country's busiest courthouses will be closed for the rest of the week after hundreds of people were forced to evacuate when an emergency was declared.
Judges and magistrates had just taken the bench to hear 550 cases in Sydney's Downing Centre courtrooms on Tuesday morning when the power suddenly went out throughout the building.
After a few moments of confusion, an alert asked everyone to leave the building immediately due to a "street emergency".
Crowds of lawyers, judicial staff, accused criminals, and schoolkids on an excursion streamed down fire escape staircases onto Liverpool Street in the city centre.
Thirteen prisoners being held in the court complex were moved by police and prison staff as a precaution.
During the chaos, three people became trapped in elevators inside the court complex and needed to be rescued by Fire and Rescue NSW.
The culprit was a burst pipe, which gushed water onto Castlereagh and Goulburn streets, where barriers had been set up to divert traffic.
Ausgrid said the burst water main had flooded an underground substation in the city, causing a power outage that affected about 860 customers - including the courthouse.
The flooding affected all electrical and IT systems for the Downing Centre and John Madison Tower, a Department of Communities and Justice spokesperson said.
While power has been restored to some parts of the court precinct, Ausgrid has warned it might take several days to assess the damage and restore power after the complex outage.
The justice department spokesperson said the damage to the Downing Centre's electrical room was "significant" and critical equipment would likely need to be replaced.
The department expects the eight-level courthouse will be closed for the rest of the week.
Cases scheduled to be heard at the Downing Centre would be moved to other courthouses or be rescheduled, the spokesperson said.
Sydney Water will continue repairing the water main overnight after technicians stemmed the flow about an hour after the water started pouring onto the street.
The courthouse was among about 400 electricity customers that remained without power on Tuesday afternoon, according to Ausgrid.
The cause of the water main rupture is unknown as NSW Police and Fire and Rescue NSW investigate.
It comes two weeks after a refurbishment of the department-store-turned-courthouse was announced.
At least five new courtrooms and 10 virtual courtrooms will be created during the $34.5 million upgrade of the Downing Centre and John Maddison Tower, according to the state government.
The funding forms part of a half-billion-dollar push to beef up the state justice system and support victim-survivors.

Latest technology for police amid crime crackdown

Police will be equipped with the latest technology as a state government maintains its crime crackdown in a milestone budget. Queensland's Liberal National government will commit nearly $150 million to police in Tuesday's budget, with new tasers, tyre deflation devices, body-worn cameras and tactical first aid kits to be deployed. "Things that can allow police to do their job and do them well," Premier David Crisafulli said on Monday. The budget will mark the LNP government's first since 2014 after it campaigned hard on crime to claim election success last year. The Queensland government's first eight months in power has introduced controversial "adult crime, adult time" legislation that ensures youth offenders are sentenced as adults on a range of charges. Its upcoming budget will feature $147.9 million to deliver more than 6500 state-of-the-art tasers and upgrade body-worn cameras with radios and livestreaming capabilities. The new tasers are key for the police force as they give officers four times the safe operating distance - around 14 metres - to deploy the device, Acting Police Commissioner Shane Chelepy said. Queensland Police were the first to use the latest Taser model outside the United States when the device was first introduced in 2023 but now thousands more officers will be equipped. Other states and territories are also beginning to provide the latest model to their police force. There have been 2000 situations in Queensland this year where officers considered using force, with 400 cases of tasers being deployed, Mr Chelepy said. Police have used lethal force on five occasions, with one shooting death so far this year. "The reason tasers are so effective is that they actually prevent police from having to use lethal force when we're responding to these critical incidents," Mr Chelepy said. The budget will also feature funding to fulfil the government's election campaign promises, with $50 million over five years for four new or expanded Crime Prevention Schools. Gold Coast-based "Men of Business" is the first school to operate, expanded to grades seven to 12 to help divert kids from a life of crime. The government has committed to other schools in Townsville, Rockhampton and Ipswich. North Queensland, including Townsville and Cairns which are often touted as the state's crime capitals, will also receive a "significant" boost to prevention in the budget, Mr Crisafulli said. "It needs to be," he said. "Those regions have been front row of the youth crime crisis, and those regions will get their fair share and a little bit more to deal with the crime crisis." Other crime prevention initiatives including "Jack's Law", which was recently made permanent, will also receive budget funding to equip more officers with weapon-wanding devices. The legislation, named after teen Jack Beasley who was fatally stabbed on the Gold Coast, allows police to wand for weapons in nightlife areas, public transport and supermarkets. Treasurer David Janetzki will hand down the budget on Tuesday afternoon.

The incident occurred in Newcastle, a city on the eastern coast of Australia, at approximately 2:40 a.m. local time on Sunday, June 22, per a press release issued by the New South Wales Police Department. Authorities said a police officer initially saw a Holden Commodore with an unauthorized license plate driving 'in a dangerous manner.' Aussie's startling find hidden in 4WD after driving home from the beach

An Aussie has made a startling find hidden inside their four-wheel-drive after a 'tense' drive home from the beach. After spending the day lapping up the sun and ocean waves, the Broome resident packed up their Land Cruiser and headed home. However, they soon realised they were not alone, with a large intruder also deciding to join them on the journey. Moments after popping the car's bonnet, the driver was greeted by a 1.8 metre mulga — Australia's largest venomous snake — that had climbed up a front wheel and tucked itself inside. Photos posted online by local snake catcher Aidan Mitchell, who was called out to help retrieve the 'beauty', show the native animal poking its head out an opening in the bonnet, which he said provide 'good hiding spots'. 'It was a tense drive home for someone,' he said. Mitchell detailed the 'challenging and unconventional catch' to ABC Radio, revealing the owner of the vehicle left it under a carport for a few days before hiring someone to drag the 4WD into the driveway using a forklift. 'Nobody was keen to get inside the vehicle and drive it. Understandably,' he said, adding the snake 'wouldn't have known where it was'. 'It was just climbing up a thing and that's where it made itself comfortable for the time.' 🏕️ Couple's 'surprisingly rare' 2kg find hidden inside 4WD: 'Biggest I've seen' 🐍 Unexpected intruder bursts through shed roof as homeowner watches TV 🚘 Deadly find on roadside in iconic Aussie suburb sparks wild theory Mitchell said his strategy was to 'just keep the snake moving' until it was in position where he could easily 'get a hold of it'. 'It was very tricky, but every call is a little bit different, so it just requires a bit of a bit of good judgment and resourcefulness. I thought a snake under a bonnet, yeah, we've got to be pretty careful with that,' he told ABC Radio. 'It was identified as a mulga, so it's a whole element of safety and consideration of a venomous reptile like that, to do it gently for the snake itself and safely for people around.' Over an hour later, the snake finally shifted into an accessible position and was removed and relocated. Although the circumstances were unusual, Mitchell said it's not the first time he's found a snake seeking shelter in a car's engine bay. 'I had to dismantle a brand new Land Cruiser one time — the internals — to find a tiny little tree snake. It was about a foot-long [and] blended in with all the wires and everything. So that was interesting.' The snake catcher urged anyone who does come across a snake in their car or home to back away carefully, call a professional for help and keep an eye on it. 'We're snake catchers, not snake finders. If people turn their back and run away, and I arrive there, and they don't know where it is — I'm not looking.' Late last year, a travelling couple were stunned to find a 2kg mulga snake in their 4WD's engine bay after setting up camp in South Australia. Do you have a story tip?
