‘Saturday Night Live' Highlights: Jack Black Pumps Up the Crowd at Studio 8H and at Home
After last week's slightly languid 'Saturday Night Live' episode hosted by Mikey Madison, there was no doubt that Jack Black needed to bring the energy and boy, did he not disappoint. Following a pretty standard cold open featuring James Austin Johnson as Trump announcing his tariffs, as well as yet another appearance from Mike Myers as Elon Musk, Black took to the main Studio 8H stage as if he was being shot out of a cannon.
Though initially unsure if he should take another spin as host, the band playing Aerosmith's 'Back in the Saddle' prompted Black to grab a mic and use the entire studio as his stage. Not only could Bill Burr and Kieran Culkin (both currently in the Broadway revival of 'Glengarry Glen Ross') be seen in the crowd, but if you look closely, a few faces from 'School of Rock' were visible as well.

Kenan Thompson Wouldn't Mind Being a 'Forever Cast Member' on 'Saturday Night Live'
Though all of Black's live sketches offered at least a few giggles, if not an outright cackle, the one that really showed off his comedy chops was a pre-taped bit that doubles as a commercial for both Flamin' Hot Cheetos and the hemorrhoid treatment Preparation H. While the conceit is funny enough, Black's over-the-top presentation and forceful enthusiasm for the combination of both products brings the gag to a whole other level, making this one of the best commercial parodies 'SNL' has done in quite some time.
While 'The Lonely Island' is no longer a full-time part of 'SNL,' their impact on the show has remained, with pre-taped musical sketches now a staple of the variety series. Not all of these bits have landed in the absence of 'The Lonely Island,' but last night's 'Goth Kid on Vacation' was top tier, harkening back to the glory days of 'I'm On a Boat' and 'Dick in a Box.' Featuring Kenan Thompson and Ego Nwodim as a Jamaican singing duo, the song is a jaunty ear-worm that recalls the one sibling in most families unable to enjoy an easy-going vacation in paradise. Michael Longfellow is hilarious as the eponymous goth kid, with Black offering a killer emo-inspired solo in the middle of the song as well.
Colin Jost and Michael Che have been delivering 3-pointers all season at the Weekend Update desk, proving why they've been mainstays on the show for over a decade, but last night, Nwodim ate them both up for a bit that recalled the Def Jam style of stand-up comedy from the 1990s. Referencing the recent news that Trump's White House Correspondents' Dinner would break with tradition and not feature a comedian as host — even after Amber Ruffin had already been announced for the job — Nwodim decided to offer her own skills to show that you can still be funny without referencing politics. Instead, Nwodim's jokes focused around the food being served at the function and not being able to find a good man. Things went off-the-rails when she tried to get the audience to participate, proving that sometimes the best part of 'SNL' are the moments you can't plan for.
Again, all of the live sketches last night were better than many featured during 'SNL 50,' purely based on Black's own strong sense of timing, as well as the cast's comfort working with a true professional who is on their level or higher. However, the one that stood above the rest came a bit later in the evening, with Black playing a band leader performing on a pier near 'Bass Lake.' As he offers others to join him on stage for a rendition of Tom Petty's 'Freefallin',' a host of what we'll politely call 'gator-trash' appear, ready to perform. The only problem is that they all insist on playing bass, a notion that soon gets out-of-hand, as the intensity of the sound begins the compromise the structure they're standing on.
'Saturday Night Live' returns next week, April 12, with host Jon Hamm and musical guest Lizzo.

Hamilton fans react as key cast member ‘cut out' of Tonys performance
The original Broadway cast of Hamilton took the stage at the 78th annual Tony Awards, but with one notable absence among the solo performers. Hamilton creator and star Lin-Manuel Miranda was joined by principal cast members Daveed Diggs, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Jonathan Groff, Christopher Jackson, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Leslie Odom, Jr., Okieriete Onaodowan, and Phillipa Soo. But Anthony Ramos, who played the dual roles of Philip Hamilton and John Laurens in the production, wasn't given a main part in the performance — and fans were quick to notice. 'Sooooo, did I just miss it or why didn't Anthony Ramos get a stand out moment??? Fairly certain that his dual role deserved it??' one fan wrote. 'They had Anthony Ramos as a stand in lol only person without a solo during the performance,' another said. 'Lowkey salty Anthony Ramos didn't get a solo but it was still amazing,' another wrote. 'Anthony Ramos actually showing up for the Hamilton performance just to be constantly cut out of frame and the only man with a main role without a solo… omg,' a fourth reacted. Ramos was part of the Broadway company of Hamilton from its 2015 opening until November 2016. He went on to star in the film adaptation of Miranda's other hit musical, In The Heights. Fans originally believed Ramos wasn't onstage at all during the Tonys performance. He was seen in the audience earlier in the broadcast, but because he wasn't given a moment in the spotlight like the other principal cast members, many missed his presence completely. Ramos's name was not included in a May 29 press release announcing the performance. It's not clear when he joined the reunion lineup. The original cast reunited to celebrate the hit musical's tenth anniversary on Broadway. Hamilton received a record-breaking 16 Tony nominations in 2016 and ultimately won 11 awards, including Best Musical. Rounding out the ensemble of the Hamilton company were Carleigh Bettiol, Andrew Chappelle, Ariana DeBose, Alysha Deslorieux, Sydney James Harcourt, Neil Haskell, Sasha Hutchings, Thayne Jasperson, Stephanie Klemons, Morgan Marcell, Javier Muñoz, Emmy Raver-Lampman, Jon Rua, Austin Smith, Seth Stewart, Betsy Struxness, Ephraim Sykes and Voltaire Wade-Greene. The cast performed a medley of songs from the production, including 'Non-Stop,' 'My Shot,' 'History Has Its Eyes on You,' and 'The Room Where It Happens.' Fans were thrilled with the overall performance, with many flocking to social media to share their thoughts. 'That Hamilton Medley with the ENTIRE original company just changed my life holy s***,' one fan wrote on X. 'Chills! This was incredible to watch the original cast of Hamilton perform together 10 years later!' another wrote. 'This just brought me so much joy omg just reignited my Hamilton obsession,' someone else shared. Several members of the original company appeared in other parts of the broadcast. Goldsberry, who won a Tony for her role as Angelica Schuyler in Hamilton, hosted the first part of the ceremony, The Tony Awards: Act One, on Pluto TV. Previous Tony winner Groff, nominated this year for his leading role in Just in Time, performed early on in the national broadcast, which began at 8 p.m. ET. Oscar winner DeBose presented the award for Leading Actor in a Musical, and Miranda awarded the Best Musical trophy. The full list of 2025 Tony winners can be found here.

Steven Tyler and Joe Perry have lunch in Florida. Could an Aerosmith reunion be next?
It was just another sunny day on Florida's west coast — until two rock legends showed up for lunch. Singer Steven Tyler, 77, and guitarist Joe Perry, 74, of Aerosmith were spotted grabbing a bite and posing for a photo together at Morton's Gourmet Market, a longtime specialty food store in Sarasota. The market opened in 1969 — just a year before Aerosmith launched the career that would eventually land the band in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001. In the photo shared by Morton's on social media, Tyler — wearing a sheer black shirt, patterned pants, layered necklaces, and holding a Morton's bag — stands smiling next to two employees in branded black shirts. To their right is Perry, in a burgundy button-down shirt, ripped jeans, beaded jewelry, and his signature wild hair, completing a snapshot that must have delighted fans and likely surprised a few unsuspecting shoppers. Why did Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith visit Morton's in Florida? A manager for Morton's — which opened more than half a century ago when Ted Morton purchased Marable's Market — could not be immediately reached for comment. However, the gourmet grocery store revealed on social media that the rock stars, once known as the 'Toxic Twins,' dropped in for a bite to eat. 'Never a dull moment at the market!' Morton's posted on Thursday, June 19. 'Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith dropped by for lunch. Awesome guys!' Of course, Sarasota has deep ties to Aerosmith, with Perry owning a home on Longboat Key. But appearances by the guitar hero remain rare — especially ones where he's accompanied by his longtime lead singer and songwriting partner, a duo responsible for such classic rock anthems as the Aerosmith hits 'Walk This Way,' 'Same Old Song and Dance,' and 'Back in the Saddle.' Could an Aerosmith reunion be happening? Aerosmith retired from touring last year after Tyler suffered a vocal cord injury. But Perry is preparing to get back on stage with his namesake group — and some familiar faces are joining him. The Joe Perry Project's eight-date run kicks off Aug. 13 at the Seminole Hard Rock Tampa Event Center and features fellow Aerosmith members Brad Whitford and Buck Johnson, along with Chris Robinson of The Black Crowes and Robert DeLeo and Eric Kretz of Stone Temple Pilots. Could Tyler make a surprise appearance? The Sarasota sighting certainly fuels the speculation. Perry's publicist did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

SZA Shares Behind-the-Scenes Footage of a New ‘Guest Star' Collaboration With Lizzo
SZA might be extraordinarily busy as she prepares to head overseas with her and Kendrick Lamar's Grand National Tour — but that didn't stop her from swooping in for a quick recording session with her friend Lizzo. In a series of posts to her Instagram Stories early Friday (June 20), SZA teased fans with a forthcoming collaboration between her and the 'Juice' singer. What started as a glimpse of Lizzo's own new music in the video, the 'Luther' singer started sharing clips of her voice playing alongside Lizzo's in the background. 'Working on a guest star for bookie @lizzobeeating's new mixtape,' SZA wrote in one caption, while calling their link-up a 'lil after-dinner session' in another. While it's unclear whether Love in Real Life is the 'mixtape' SZA referred to in her post, the album has yet to receive an official release date. Earlier this week, SZA opened up to Chappell Roan about her friendship with Lizzo during a conversation for Interview Magazine. Speaking about the first time she and the 'About Damn Time' singer met, SZA praised the 'organic and very random' connection they immediately shared. 'One day, we were on the same tour, and I was like, 'We're about to drive out to Lake Michigan, do you want to come?' And she was like, 'Yeah, let's go,'' SZA recalled. 'And then we just got drunk and hung out, and we kept doing that, and then our lives and careers progressed, and we kept talking and hanging out.' The new song wouldn't be the first time the pair have worked together, either. Back in 2023, SZA appeared on a revamped version of Lizzo's 2022 hit 'Special.' In May, Lizzo even crashed the stage during SZA and Lamar's tour stop in Los Angeles to perform the track with her on stage. The news comes after SZA and her co-headliner Lamar wrap the first leg of their 2025 Grand National Tour. Starting in July, the pair will begin performances across Europe — including shows in Paris, London, Barcelona and Rome — and close out their headline-making run with a set of shows in Australia this December.
