ABU DHABI (WAM)A team of scientists at NYU Abu Dhabi has developed a breakthrough paper-based diagnostic device that can detect COVID-19 and other infectious diseases in under 10 minutes, without the need for sophisticated lab equipment or trained personnel.The Radially Compartmentalized Paper Chip (RCP-Chip), engineered by researchers at the Advanced Microfluidics and Microdevices Laboratory (AMMLab), offers a fast, affordable, and portable solution for on-site screening of infectious diseases.The RCP-Chip has been developed to detect even minute traces of viral genetic material using a droplet of fluid and a visible color change.It operates without electricity or special equipment, needing just a source of mild heat at around 65°C, similar to the temperature of warm water.The research is detailed in a paper titled Single-Layer Radially Compartmentalized Paper Chip (RCP-Chip) for Rapid Isothermal Multiplex Detection of SARS-CoV-2 Gene Targets, published in the journal Advanced Sensor Research. The study reports the development and validation of the RCP-Chip as a rapid, multiplexed diagnostic platform for infectious disease detection suitable for low-resource settings.NYUAD Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Bioengineering and senior author Mohammad A. Qasaimeh said, 'The RCP-Chip is designed for real-world impact. It can be reconfigured to detect other infectious diseases, making it a powerful tool for global health.'
'This is a fast, affordable, lab-free test that detects multiple gene targets in under 10 minutes,' said NYUAD Research Assistant and co-first author of the study Pavithra Sukumar. 'What makes it truly impactful is its real-world potential. This portable test could significantly improve outbreak response by enabling faster isolation, treatment, and control.'

The thermal data will enhance the agency’s ability to detect hidden trends, anticipate potential outcomes, and react swiftly to emerging challenges or opportunities. The collaboration aims to significantly elevate geospatial intelligence capabilities. By fusing SatVu’s thermal imagery with AI-enhanced analytics, the programme will provide deeper insights into industrial changes, infrastructure developments, and urban activity that often go undetected by traditional sensors. It will also enable more precise monitoring of global economic trends through supply chain and industrial analysis, as well as deliver actionable intelligence to military and policy leaders. Speaking on the partnership, SatVu Founder and CEO, Anthony Baker, said: 'Our collaboration with industry leaders reflects a shared commitment to advancing geospatial intelligence for national security and global resilience. By integrating SatVu’s high-resolution thermal imagery with cutting-edge data and analytics, we’re delivering a new activity layer to support mission-critical decision-making in the NGA’s Luno B programme.' Looking ahead, SatVu plans to further enhance its space-based capabilities with the launch of its next-generation thermal satellites. HotSat-2 is set for deployment in the fourth quarter of 2025, followed by HotSat-3 within the following year, positioning the company to provide real-time, high-resolution thermal intelligence at an unprecedented scale.

19 June 2025 14:30 ABU DHABI (WAM)Executive Director of the Health Life Sciences Sector at the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH), Dr. Asma Al Mannaei, affirmed that World Sickle Cell Day, marked annually on 19th June, is a vital occasion to raise awareness about the disease, support patients and their families, and shed light on efforts aimed at reducing its health and social Al Mannaei told WAM that Sickle cell disease remains a significant public health concern globally, affecting the quality of life for patients and placing long-term pressure on families. "At the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, we are committed to reshaping that reality through innovation, early detection and personalised care. Our mission is to foster a healthy population, deliver best-in-class care, and drive continuous resilience and innovation."Dr. Al Mannaei added, "Supported by powerful Artificial Intelligence tools, driven by data and genomic sciences, we are building a system that predicts, prevents and acts.""Our efforts begin with prevention. Through the Premarital Genetic Screening Programme, we empower couples to make informed decisions that help reduce the prevalence of genetic conditions such as sickle cell in future generations."She continued, 'We then move to prediction, where we are shifting from a reactive approach to proactive and personalised care approach for sickle cell, by utilising platforms such as the Emirati Genome Programme. By integrating sickle cell disease in the newly launched Newborn Genetic Screening Programme, we can ensure early detection, timely intervention and healthier outcomes for families across the Emirate.'Dr. Al Mannaei also praised the introduction of innovative treatments. In collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Centre and global partner Vertex Pharmaceuticals, the Department has introduced CASGEVY, a CRISPR/Cas9-based gene-editing therapy for patients with sickle cell disease and transfusion-dependent beta-thalassaemia."This marks the first time this cutting-edge treatment is available in the UAE," she added that, beyond treatment, investment in scientific research remains a top priority. In partnership with the Authority of Social Contribution – Ma'an, and through the Research and Innovation Fund, the Department is supporting research that addresses key healthcare priorities. One of the grant awardees received funding for research focused on anaemia and sickle cell disease, examining their impact on healthspan.
