Carlos Prates questions UFC Kansas City performance – a reminder what losing feels like
Carlos Prates has been faced with a harsh reality coming out of his first loss in six years.
At Saturday's UFC on ESPN 66, Prates (21-7 MMA, 4-1 UFC) was defeated by Ian Machado Garry (16-1 MMA, 9-1 UFC), who won by unanimous decision. The fight headlined the promotion's event at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Mo.
"Guys, this is crazy," Prates wrote Monday on Instagram in Portuguese. "Six years without losing, I had forgotten how much it hurts, how it hurts the heart, the soul, more than any other part of the body, all day thinking 'what if I had caught the back,' 'what if I knocked it down,' what if I touched it more" … and so on. Time to go home, take care of the body and come back stronger than every other time. Despite everything, this week was awesome, we had some awesome days, lots of lessons and so on, I have nothing to complain about. Thanks to everyone who cheered, sent messages, my team, my crown, everyone involved in this journey. I can't wait to be back. THE NIGHTMARE HAS JUST BEGUN!"
Prates, 31, had an 11-fight winning streak snapped. His previous defeat came in June 2019 vs. Gadjimurad Abdulaev at ONE Warrior Series 6. Prates made his UFC debut in February 2024 and defeated Trevin Giles, Charles Radtke, Li Jingliang, and Neil Magny by knockout prior to his first main event vs. Garry.

Jon Jones Announces UFC Retirement, Tom Aspinall Named Heavyweight Champion
Jon Jones officially announced his retirement from UFC on Saturday night. "This decision comes after a lot of reflection, and I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude for the journey I've experienced over the years," Jones wrote on social media. "From the first time I stepped into the Octagon, my goal was to push the boundaries of what was possible in this sport. Becoming the youngest UFC champion in history, defending my title against some of the best fighters in the world, and sharing unforgettable moments with fans across the globe—these are memories I'll cherish forever. I've faced incredible highs and some tough lows, but every challenge has taught me something valuable and made me stronger, both as a fighter and as a person. I want to thank the UFC, Dana, Hunter, Lorenzo, God, my family, coaches, teammates, and all the fans who have stood by me through every chapter. Your unwavering support and belief in me have been my foundation. To my fellow fighters, thank you for bringing out the best in me and for the respect we've shared inside and outside the cage. As I close this chapter of my life, I look forward to new opportunities and challenges ahead. MMA will always be a part of who I am, and I'm excited to see how I can continue to contribute to the sport and inspire others in new ways. Thank you all for being part of this incredible journey with me. The best is yet to come." Jones was previously the UFC heavyweight champion, while Tom Aspinall was the interim heavyweight champion. Jones, 37, leaves the sport with a near-perfect 28-1 record. His sole loss came in July 2022 when he injured his knee against Curtis Blaydes. Jones became the youngest champion in UFC history when he took the light heavyweight title in 2011 at 23 years old, eventually transitioning to the heavyweight division in 2023. Prior to his retirement, Jones had been facing pressure to vacate his title because of his prolonged inactivity and delays in defending against Aspinall. In 2023, following a three-year hiatus, Jones made his return to the UFC for his first heavyweight fight, going on to defeat Ciryl Gane in the first round and claim the belt that had been vacated by Francis Ngannou just before, per Sportsnet. Jones defended his belt against former long-time champion Stipe Miocic in Nov. 2024. He revealed earlier this month that he hadn't "really worked out" since that victory at UFC 309, per Bleacher Report. Want great stories delivered right to your inbox? Dana White Makes Crucial UFC, Jon Jones Announcement
Dana White Makes Crucial UFC, Jon Jones Announcement originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Jon Jones, largely considered one of the best pound-for-pound UFC fighters of all-time, has made headlines yet again. Jones holds a professional record of 28-1 (1 no contest), and as of Saturday morning, stood as the UFC heavyweight champion. Advertisement Despite Jones' unparalleled success inside the Octagon, he has struggled to walk the straight and narrow with multiple run-ins with the law outside the sport. Jones' checkered past stems all the way back to a 2011 arrest, and has seen everything from DUIs to failed drug tests for cocaine use to hit-and-run accidents to indefinite suspensions by the UFC. Jones most recently appeared in the Octagon when he defeated Stipe Miocic via KO/TKO at UFC 309 in November of 2024 to retain his heavyweight belt. Since his last fight, rumors of an upcoming title fight with Tom Aspinall kept Jones' name in the news. As of Saturday afternoon, Jones' name has been removed from contention from fighting Aspinall, or anyone else for that matter. Dana White announced that Jones called him Friday night, officially retiring from the UFC. White made the crucial announcement during his press conference following UFC Fight Night: Jamahal Hill vs. Khalil Rountree. This breaking news officially makes Aspinall the undisputed UFC heavyweight champion. Jon Jones Getty Images At 31 years old, Aspinall has shown all the promise and potential in the world when he steps into the Octagon. While he has a 15-3 overall record, his lone misstep in the UFC was a loss to Curtis Blaydes in 2022. Advertisement Aspinall was confident he would retire Jones, making this definitive statement back in March of this year. "I will retire Jon Jones without even fighting let's do it. You don't have to ask me twice. If not, I'll fight somebody else for the undisputed belt. I'll fight anybody, anytime, anywhere. It doesn't matter, I'm ready to go."
