Here's why Malia Obama changed her name
Former First Daughter Malia Obama is trying to make her way in the world of film, but you might not know it right away thanks to a slight name change.
Malia, the eldest daughter of former president Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle, is now 26 years old and has had some success directing with a 2024 short film Heart and a 2025 Nike ad featuring WNBA star A'ja Wilson. On her professional projects, the aspiring filmmaker has dropped her famous last name, instead going by Malia Ann, her first and middle name.
Michelle Obama recently addressed the name change on Kate Hudson's "Sibling Revelry" podcast:
"Malia, who started in film, I mean, her first project — she took off her last name, and we were like, 'They're still going to know it's you, Malia,'" the former First Lady told Hudson and co-host Oliver (Hudson's brother). "But we respected the fact that, you know, she's trying to make her way."
With her films showing at festivals like Sundance, it is understandable that Malia would want first impressions of the project to be based on merit, not the connection with the name Obama.
"Her first film went to Sundance and all these fancy film festivals, and she didn't use Obama as a director on the credits," the 44th president said in 2024 on "The Pivot Podcast" with Kara Swisher and Scott Galloway. "I was all like, 'You do know they'll know who you are.' And she was like, 'You know what? I want them to watch it that first time and not in any way have that association.'"

Stretching into summer: Yoga workouts mark solstice in longest day

At Times Square in New York, thousands of people enjoyed the extra sunshine in all-day yoga classes. The summer solstice officially begins at 10:42 p.m. The amount of daylight depends on the location. And the sun's intensity also varies. Long day? The Earth might have something to do with it. Friday, June 20 marks the summer solstice-the longest stretch of daylight in the Northern Hemisphere. Pack sunscreen and thank Earth's axial tilt for the extra hours. That is around 7 hours and 40 minutes of daylight. The sun appears higher or lower in the sky depending on the season. In New York City, daylight was 15 hours and 6 minutes with sunrise at 5:24 a.m. and sunset at 8:30 p.m. Yoga participants enjoyed a sunny day in Manhattan with a high temperature of 85 degrees, no precipitation and 38% humidity. Free yoga classes were open to experienced yogis and first-timers on the Broadway pedestrian plazas. Classes for 23rd Mind over Madness Yoga ran from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. The only animals allowed were service dogs. People could also participate in a livestream. It was sponsored by Times Square Alliance, which is a nonprofit organization that "works to improve and promote Times Square so that it retains the creativity, energy and edge that have made it an international icon for over 100 years," according to its website. Events have been celebrated by cultures around the world for thousands of years. Stonehenge and the Mayan Chichen Itza Pyramid were purposely built to align with these seasonal markers. Some Native American tribes in the plains and the Rocky Mountains perform a Sun Dance to celebrate the summer solstice. In Fairbanks, Alaska, a baseball game called the "Midnight Sun Game" traditionally starts at 10:30 p.m. The summer solstice occurs because the Earth has a 23.5-degree tilt. So, the planet is pointed toward the sun half of the year and the most away the other half. In the Northern Hemisphere, the summer solstice occurs when the sun reaches its northernmost point relative to Earth's celestial equator. During the summer solstice, the sun shines directly on the Tropic of Cancer in the Northern Hemisphere. That means if you stand there, you'll have no shadow at noon because the sun will be directly overhead. The winter solstice in the Northern Hemisphere is 10:02 a.m. The winter solstice takes place when the sun is in its southernmost position relative to the celestial equator. The word solstice is derived from the Latin word solstitium, which translates to "sun stands still." Angel Reese releases 'Mebound' clothing line, acknowledging criticism and raising money to fight cyberbullying
Angel Reese's new line of merchandise, "Mebounds," was released on Thursday as the Chicago Sky forward continues the fight against cyberbullying during her second season in the WNBA. Reese trademarked the word "Mebound," which was initially coined to mock her rebounding her own missed shots. While embracing the criticism, Reese took the term and flipped it into a positive message. Advertisement Reese announced the merchandise line on her X account with a video showing the different designs from the latest release. The former LSU star wrote that some of the proceeds will go to the Angel C. Reese Foundation to "help fight against cyberbullying." The line includes sweatshirts, T-shirts and hats featuring the "Mebounds" slogan, and several pieces include the line: "Anything that comes off that board, it's mine." The pieces are available on Reese's website. On an Instagram story promoting the new clothing line, Reese restated her foundation's mission, "to help fight cyberbullying, raise awareness, and create safe online spaces for the next generation. Because every rebound — and every Mebound — is power reclaimed." Advertisement Reese has advocated against cyberbullying toward athletes and girls in general. Apart from addressing the subject on her "Unapologetically Angel" podcast, Reese has made other efforts to create safe online spaces. In August 2024, Reese collaborated with "The Net" Mental Health Network to launch the "Block The Negativity Post Up Positivity' campaign. The partnership produced a video, later posted on the Sky's YouTube channel, highlighting that 87% of female athletes experience online harm. The Angel C. Reese Foundation was founded in 2023 with various initiatives to empower women through education, mentorship and sports. Apart from back-to-school giveaways and plans to open basketball courts in Chicago, Reese recently partnered with the Magic Johnson Foundation to launch a financial literacy program in Baltimore, where Reese is from. "Mebound" is the latest project as Reese aims to expand her impact beyond the basketball court. Advertisement In her second year in Chicago, Reese is already averaging a double-double with 11 points and 11.7 rebounds per game. She led the WNBA in rebounds as a rookie with A'ja Wilson and Jonquel Jones sitting second and third, respectively. The Sky sit fifth in the Eastern Conference and 11th in the WNBA with a 3-8 record.
