Children return to schools amid a festive mood in Ernakulam
Hundreds of children were accorded a colourful reception on the occasion of the start of the new academic year across schools in Ernakulam on Monday (June 2).
Songs, dance performances, distribution of gifts, sweets, and flowers turned the 'Praveshanolsavam' into a festive mood. Although a few tiny tots broke into tears amid the new surroundings, the teachers and non-teaching staff lost no time in consoling them, as evident from the scenes witnessed in several schools on the first day of the new academic year.
At the Government Girls' Lower Primary School, Ernakulam, the children were welcomed with colourful caps made out of chart paper. The senior students were also around to ensure that the younger students remained happy on the inaugural day. The Government High School at West Kadungalloor near Aluva wore a festive look as the district-level 'Praveshanolsavam' was held on the campus.
Minister for Industries P. Rajeeve, who inaugurated the programme, said that the new curriculum will equip the children to tackle the challenges in life beyond the knowledge gathered from textbooks. The inclusion of topics such as good habits, the importance of cleanliness, and the ill effects of drugs will enable them to become responsible citizens, he said.
Sethu, the author, who spoke on the occasion, said that learning one's mother language will unite humanity. The learning of mother tongue cannot be set aside in our educational system, he said. Name slips with messages related to cleanliness were distributed among the students as part of a campaign by the Suchitwa Mission.
Parvathy Gopakumar, Assistant Collector, Ernakulam, who inaugurated the 'Praveshanolsavam' at the St. Joseph U.P. School, urged the children to face the challenges in their lives as part of the journey ahead. 'If you can overcome these challenges, you will be able to move forward with courage,' she said. Anthony Asanparambil, Chairperson of the Maradu Municipality, inaugurated the Thrippunithura sub-district programme held at the Government Lower Primary School in Mangayil. Children were welcomed to the campus with colourful balloons and sweets.

Govt. to decide on vacant seats after Plus One admissions: Minister
After the completion of this year's Plus One admissions, the government will examine and decide what to do with seats that regularly remain vacant, Minister for General Education V. Sivankutty has said. At a press conference here on Tuesday, the Minister said a number of seats was likely to remain vacant, particularly in Malappuram, after completion of the admission process. The Minister underlined that the Plus One main phase allotment and admission had been completed without any protests as the government had taken care to ensure that the batches temporarily sanctioned and shifted in previous years had been included in the seat matrix for allotment. Guidelines for submitting applications had also been published along with publication of results. The number of students who had got A+ grade had also come down. Praveshanolsavam Mr. Sivankutty said that for the first time ever, a Praveshanolsavam would be held for Plus One higher secondary students to mark the start of their classes at 9 a.m. on Wednesday. The State-level inauguration would be held at Government Model Boys Higher Secondary School, Thycaud, here at 9 a.m. The Minister said that 2.11 lakh students had taken permanent admission in merit quota till Monday evening. In the sports quota, it was 3,428 and in model residential school it was 1,045. As many as 13,609 students had taken admission in community quota; 6,840 in management quota; and 3,826 in unaided quota. In all, 2,40,533 lakh students had taken permanent Plus One admission. As many as 4,24,583 students had passed the SSLC examinations, while 4,63,686 had applied for Plus One admission. As many as 45,851 applicants had submitted applications in more than one district, the Minister said. Incorrect entry Students who had entered their community incorrectly in the applications and so could not take admission in their allotted schools can correct the errors and apply for supplementary allotment. Vacancies and other details for supplementary allotment will be published on June 28. Management quota admissions will be completed on June 27 and the remaining vacancies included for supplementary allotment. SAY exams The Save-a-Year (SAY) examinations would be held in 572 centres in the State, Lakshadweep, and Gulf countries from June 23 to 27. As many as 1.19 lakh students will sit for the examinations. Improvement can be held in one subject. Students who failed can attempt all papers.

Swachh Survekshan Grameen survey to assess rural cleanliness standards begins
T'puram: The Swachh Survekshan Grameen (SSG) survey, aimed at evaluating achievements in waste management, will begin on Tuesday. The survey is part of the Swachh Bharat Mission Grameen and will be conducted across all states. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The survey will cover 21,000 selected villages across the country, including 450 villages in Kerala. At least 20 villages will be surveyed in each district, with the number of villages proportionate to the population. The survey will assess waste management systems and cleanliness standards in houses, local govt offices, schools, anganwadis, public places, markets, places of worship and primary health centres. Various agencies will conduct the survey, coordinated by the state's local govt department and the Suchitwa Mission. A maximum of 1000 points will be awarded to each district based on adherence to sanitation and waste management standards. Teams will visit a set number of households in each panchayat to inspect facilities such as toilets, handwashing stations, drinking water, domestic waste management systems and soak pits for wastewater treatment. To directly gather public opinion, the Swachh Survekshan Grameen 2025 mobile application will be used for citizen feedback. The survey aims to develop plans to provide facilities in areas that are currently lacking.

Over 1,800 students clear SSLC-2 examination in DK, Udupi districts
As many as 993 students (35.66 %) of 2,785 class 10 students from Dakshina Kannada and 821 students (43.01 %) of 1,905 students from Udupi district have passed the SSLC-2 examination conducted in the last week of May. S. Sriram Shetty from Government High School Kundapura, Udupi district, was the topper with full 625 marks. In Dakshina Kannada, the Moodbidri block topped as 72 of the 145 students (49.66%) have passed. The next is Puttur block where 152 of the 341 students (44.57%) passed. A total of 154 of 349 students passed from Belthangady block (44.13%), and 83 of 200 students (41.5%) passed from Sullia block. As many as 222 of the 760 students (29.21%) have passed from Bantwal education block From the two Mangaluru city blocks, 157 (29.02%) from Mangaluru South and 153 (34.08%) from Mangaluru North blocks cleared SSLC-2 examination. Vikram Shailesha Nayak from Shree Nayarayana Guru English Medium High School, Katipalla, Mangaluru, and P.N. Sharadhi from Karnataka Public School, Bellare, Sullia taluk secured 622 marks. Sameeksha Sudhakara Shetty from Vani English Medium School Belthangady, Laxmi Sangayya Malimath from B.R. Ambedkar Residential School, Gurupura, Mangaluru, and P. Greeshma from Knanaya Jyothi English Medium High School Kadaba, Puttur have secured 620 marks. Shaina Lisha Monthero from Government High School Manila Bantwal taluk and Azweena Maimuna from Khilriya English Medium School, Idya, Surathkal, Mangaluru, have secured 618 marks. As many as 209 of 370 students (56.49%) passed from Kundapura block, 131 of 299 students (43.81%) from Karkala, 160 of 357 (44.82%) from Brahmavar, 140 of 368 students (38.04%) from Byndoor block and 181 of 511 (35.42%) students from Udupi blocks have passed. Among the toppers from Udupi district include M.S. Hariprasad from Sri Venkatramana English Medium School Kundapura and Chiranthan Bhat from Sandeepan English Medium School, Byndoor, who got 623 marks. Gauthami Gopal Bhandari from Sandeepan English Medium School, Byndoor, secured 622 marks. The third attempt of SSLC examination, SSLC-3, is scheduled to be held between July 5 and July 12.
