UNICEF launches video drive to end child marriages
ISLAMABAD: United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has launched a video campaign featuring Unicef's National Ambassador Saba Qamar, to raise awareness about the urgent need to end child marriage in Pakistan.
The video calls on communities to speak up against this harmful practice and reinforces UNICEF's commitment to protect the rights of children and empower girls across Pakistan.
In the video, the UNICEF's National Ambassador for Child Rights, Saba Qamar, highlights the impact of child marriage on young girls' futures and calls for unified action to protect children.
Pakistan has the sixth highest number of child brides globally, with an estimated 19 million girls married before age 18. Nearly half become pregnant before their 18th birthday, posing serious health risks for both mother and child. Only 13 per cent of married girls finish secondary school compared to 44 per cent of unmarried peers, limiting their future opportunities and independence.
Why should any child in Pakistan be forced into a marriage and a future they did not choose? With all the risks to their health and education, we cannot allow this to go unchallenged.
Last year in Sujawal, Sindh, Saba Qamar said, I witnessed firsthand the impact of child marriage and the difference UNICEF's work is making.
'I met inspiring young champions like AnamNazir, 14, who stopped three marriages in her community,' said Qamar.
'I am proud to lend my voice to this campaign, for all the girls, and sometimes boys too, who suffer behind closed doors because of child marriage.'
'We cannot allow the circumstances a child is born into dictate their entire futures. Child marriage is often fueled by poverty, but it is also deeply rooted in entrenched gender norms and societal expectations,' said Abdullah Fadil, UNICEF Representative in Pakistan. 'We need legal reforms and enforcement, cultural change, and greater investment in adolescent girls – in their rights, their well-being and their potential. How can Pakistan succeed when half the team is left on the sidelines?'
UNICEF welcomes the recent decision by the Islamabad Capital Territory to raise the minimum age of marriage to 18, joining Sindh province, and encourages all remaining provinces and territories to seize the momentum and follow suit.
The campaign video is part of UNICEF's broader advocacy work in collaboration with UNFPA, UN Women, and government partners. Efforts included raising the legal age of marriage to 18 across all provinces, engaging communities through dialogue with parents, caregivers, and religious leaders and communication campaigns such as BOLO (Speak up) and promoting girl-led activism and youth champions.

It is important to note that now Pakistan has announced its formal decision to recommend US President Donald Trump for 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, praising his 'decisive diplomatic intervention and pivotal leadership' during the recent four-day war between Pakistan and India. In a statement posted on X, the government highlighted Trump's pivotal role in helping to de-escalate tensions between the two nuclear-armed nations. The post carried the headline: 'Government of Pakistan Recommends President Donald J Trump for 2026 Nobel Peace Prize.' How ironic it is from India's perspective that prime minister Narendra Modi's so-called 'close friend' President Trump is now being assailed by Godi media for inflicting a blow on India's nefarious designs of becoming the regional hegemon. Timely completion of energy projects top priority: secy E&P
PESHAWAR: KP Secretary Energy and Power Mohammad Zubair Khan has said that timely completion of the Bala Kot, Lawi and Gurkan, Mataltan, Gabral (Kalam) and Madiyan Hydropower Projects within the stipulated time frame is a major challenge. He expressed these views while presiding over a meeting here the other day. Besides the chief executive officers of Provincial Energy Development Organisation (PEDO), KP Oil and Gas Company and heads of Electric Inspectorate, Energy Planning, Additional Secretary Admin Shoaib Khan and Additional Secretary Power Anwar Khan Sherani, other senior officers also attended the meeting. He stressed on the need to complete the ongoing energy projects in view of the prevailing circumstances and to promote investment in these projects by immediately amending and revising the Power Policy 2016 and issued instructions to prepare work plans, timelines and activity plans to bring transparency in the projects. The secretary Energy and Power said that under the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government's Good Governance Roadmap Programme, merit and transparency in institutions is the top priority. He said that the biggest challenge is to complete the ongoing energy projects in the Energy & Power department and all its subsidiary institutions within the stipulated time frame in the light of fast track. He said that In light of the directives of the KP chief secretary, it should be the duty of all officers and officials to conduct affairs under e-tendering, e-paid, one-window platform, which will be strictly monitored. Moharram-ul-Haram: Minister orders uninterrupted power supply
ISLAMABAD: The Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari has directed power Distribution Companies (Discos) to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply during Moharram-ul-Haram to facilitate these religious gatherings and avoid any inconvenience to the public. In a letter to all Chairmen and CEOs of Discos, the Minister stated that the sacred month of Moharram-ul-Haram is approaching, during which millions of devotees/mourners across Pakistan will participate in Majalis and processions to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA). ' Since the Holy Month of Moharram is falling in the month of July and heat waves are expected, it is very much imperative that all necessary measures are taken to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply to facilitate these religious gatherings and avoid any inconvenience to the public,' he added. Reliable power supply to Karachi directed In this regard, Chairmen and CEOs of Discos have been directed to take the following actions on an urgent basis: (i) pre-emptive Maintenance & Load Management: Conduct thorough inspections of all transmission and distribution networks, particularly in areas where Majalis and processions are expected. Ensure that all faulty equipment is promptly repaired or replaced to prevent outages ;(ii) deploy dedicated emergency response teams on high alert throughout Moharram, especially on the 9th and 10th of Moharram, to address any power disruptions immediately ;(iii) coordinate with district administrations, law enforcement agencies, and religious organizers to identify critical locations requiring priority power supply and backup arrangements ;(iv) communicate proactively with consumers, especially Imambargahs and mosques, regarding any scheduled maintenance or potential load management measures to minimize inconvenience ;(v) ensure that standby generators and UPS systems are available at sensitive locations to provide backup power in case of any unforeseen grid issues ;(vi) provision of additional Transformers and material Ensure that sufficient number of transformers and other materials are available in each sub-division and inventory in this regard should be updated ;(vii) assign duty rosters to ensure 24/7 availability of technical and operational staff during Moharram to respond swiftly to any power-related issues; and (viii) dedicated controls Centres at all level should be established with proper coordination and propagation of its contact numbers to ensure smooth operation during the month. The Minister further stated that the sanctity of Moharram demands our utmost commitment to serving the public with diligence and respect. Any negligence in this regard will be viewed seriously.
