Moharram-ul-Haram: Minister orders uninterrupted power supply
ISLAMABAD: The Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari has directed power Distribution Companies (Discos) to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply during Moharram-ul-Haram to facilitate these religious gatherings and avoid any inconvenience to the public.
In a letter to all Chairmen and CEOs of Discos, the Minister stated that the sacred month of Moharram-ul-Haram is approaching, during which millions of devotees/mourners across Pakistan will participate in Majalis and processions to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA).
' Since the Holy Month of Moharram is falling in the month of July and heat waves are expected, it is very much imperative that all necessary measures are taken to ensure uninterrupted electricity supply to facilitate these religious gatherings and avoid any inconvenience to the public,' he added.
Reliable power supply to Karachi directed
In this regard, Chairmen and CEOs of Discos have been directed to take the following actions on an urgent basis: (i) pre-emptive Maintenance & Load Management: Conduct thorough inspections of all transmission and distribution networks, particularly in areas where Majalis and processions are expected. Ensure that all faulty equipment is promptly repaired or replaced to prevent outages ;(ii) deploy dedicated emergency response teams on high alert throughout Moharram, especially on the 9th and 10th of Moharram, to address any power disruptions immediately ;(iii) coordinate with district administrations, law enforcement agencies, and religious organizers to identify critical locations requiring priority power supply and backup arrangements ;(iv) communicate proactively with consumers, especially Imambargahs and mosques, regarding any scheduled maintenance or potential load management measures to minimize inconvenience ;(v) ensure that standby generators and UPS systems are available at sensitive locations to provide backup power in case of any unforeseen grid issues ;(vi) provision of additional Transformers and material Ensure that sufficient number of transformers and other materials are available in each sub-division and inventory in this regard should be updated ;(vii) assign duty rosters to ensure 24/7 availability of technical and operational staff during Moharram to respond swiftly to any power-related issues; and (viii) dedicated controls Centres at all level should be established with proper coordination and propagation of its contact numbers to ensure smooth operation during the month.
The Minister further stated that the sanctity of Moharram demands our utmost commitment to serving the public with diligence and respect. Any negligence in this regard will be viewed seriously.
Earlier, Sajid Naqvi, one of the leaders of Tahreek-e-Jafria wrote letter to the Power Minister, requesting for uninterrupted for Majalis during Moharram-ul-Haram.

This is apropos a letter to the Editor titled 'India's water belligerence' carried by the newspaper yesterday. In my view the writer is spot on as it is increasingly evident that India's has been trying to overcome the shock that it has received in the four-day conflict at the hands of Pakistan last month. It is important to note that now Pakistan has announced its formal decision to recommend US President Donald Trump for 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, praising his 'decisive diplomatic intervention and pivotal leadership' during the recent four-day war between Pakistan and India. In a statement posted on X, the government highlighted Trump's pivotal role in helping to de-escalate tensions between the two nuclear-armed nations. The post carried the headline: 'Government of Pakistan Recommends President Donald J Trump for 2026 Nobel Peace Prize.' How ironic it is from India's perspective that prime minister Narendra Modi's so-called 'close friend' President Trump is now being assailed by Godi media for inflicting a blow on India's nefarious designs of becoming the regional hegemon. Timely completion of energy projects top priority: secy E&P
PESHAWAR: KP Secretary Energy and Power Mohammad Zubair Khan has said that timely completion of the Bala Kot, Lawi and Gurkan, Mataltan, Gabral (Kalam) and Madiyan Hydropower Projects within the stipulated time frame is a major challenge. He expressed these views while presiding over a meeting here the other day. Besides the chief executive officers of Provincial Energy Development Organisation (PEDO), KP Oil and Gas Company and heads of Electric Inspectorate, Energy Planning, Additional Secretary Admin Shoaib Khan and Additional Secretary Power Anwar Khan Sherani, other senior officers also attended the meeting. He stressed on the need to complete the ongoing energy projects in view of the prevailing circumstances and to promote investment in these projects by immediately amending and revising the Power Policy 2016 and issued instructions to prepare work plans, timelines and activity plans to bring transparency in the projects. The secretary Energy and Power said that under the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government's Good Governance Roadmap Programme, merit and transparency in institutions is the top priority. He said that the biggest challenge is to complete the ongoing energy projects in the Energy & Power department and all its subsidiary institutions within the stipulated time frame in the light of fast track. He said that In light of the directives of the KP chief secretary, it should be the duty of all officers and officials to conduct affairs under e-tendering, e-paid, one-window platform, which will be strictly monitored. PAJCCI greets new visa policy for Afghan drivers
PESHAWAR: Senior Vice President Pak-Afghan Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PAJCCI) Zia-ul-Haq Sarhadi has welcomed the decision of Pakistan government of introducing a one year multiple entry visa for Afghan drivers to boost cross border trade. In a bid to enhance bilateral trade and streamline border management, Pakistan has recently announced this policy of granting Afghan drivers and transporters one-year multiple entry visas. 'The step taken by the government would help in reducing the hindrances in Pak-Afghan trade and transit trade by facilitating passage of good laden trucks between the two countries,' Zia commented. Sarhadi who is also Executive Member Sarhad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) also made some suggestions of making the new policy more practical and long lasting. He said before this policy, the government had decided to issue TAD-1 documents for Afghan drivers, with one year validity. Initially the visa fee for TAD was set at $100, but then it later it increased creating problems for drivers and traders. He said measures should be taken to ensure implementation of a fixed fee for the new visa issuance policy and drivers should not be compelled to pay additional amounts. He also suggested setting up a desk at Torkham border point for visa issuance and renewal for drivers and cleaners. He recalled the issuance of ''Red Pass' by the Pakistan government in late 80's to people associated with Pak-Afghan trade who keep on travelling across the border for business purposes. Revival of Red Pass policy will also help in expediting cargo travelling procedure and timing in Pak-Afghan trade, Zia opined. He said visiting drivers to embassies for application submission and other formalities will be time consuming and may cause delay in transportation of import-export bound goods between the two countries.
