Supreme Court Blocks Bid to Reopen "Thinking Out Loud" Copyright Lawsuit against Ed Sheeran

On Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled against a lawsuit against musician Ed Sheeran that alleged his hit single "Thinking Out Loud" copied Marvin Gaye's iconic song "Let's Get It On."
The Supreme Court justices declined to hear an appeal filed by Structured Asset Sales, a company owned by investment banker David Pullman, that owns a partial stake in Gaye's 1973 song.
Structured Asset Sales first sued Sheeran, his record label Warner Music, and music publisher Sony Music Publishing in 2023, seeking monetary damages over alleged similarities between the two songs.
A U.S. District Judge sided with Sheeran in the original case, concluding that the song's melody, harmony, and rhythm were too common to require copyright protection. The New York-based 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the decision last year.
In a separate 2023 copyright lawsuit over the same issue filed by the heirs of Ed Townsend, Gaye's co-writer on the Motown classic, a jury in Manhattan federal court ruled in favor of Sheeran.
Speaking outside the court at the time, Sheeran said: 'We spent the past eight years talking about two songs with dramatically different lyrics, melodies and four chords which are also different and used by songwriters every day all over the world.'
He continued: 'These chords are common building blocks which were used to create music long before 'Let's Get It On' was written and will be used to make music long after we are all gone. They are in a songwriter's alphabet, our toolkit, and should be there for all of us to use. No one owns them or the way they are played, in the same way nobody owns the color blue.'
The Let's Get It On case followed another high-profile lawsuit by Gaye's estate, in which Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams were ordered to pay more than $5 million in 2018 after a court found that Thicke's global smash "Blurred Lines" copied Gaye's 1977 hit Got to Give It Up.

H-Tayea The Italian Cultural Institute of Cairo will host a special jazz concert by the acclaimed Italian trio Doctor 3 on June 24 at the Cairo Opera House. Formed in 1997, Doctor 3 features pianist Danilo Rea, double bassist Enzo Pietropaoli, and drummer Fabrizio Sferra. The trio quickly rose to prominence with their debut album The Tales of Doctor 3, which was named 'Best Italian Album of the Year' by Musica Jazz in 1998. The group was also awarded 'Best Italian Jazz Group' in 1999, 2001, and 2003. Known for their innovative approach to jazz improvisation, Doctor 3 blends classic Italian melodies with expressive modern jazz forms, creating a distinct sound that has captivated audiences worldwide. Their performances have spanned festivals and concert halls in Europe, the United States, China, Brazil, and North Africa. After a five-year hiatus, the group reunited in 2014 with a self-titled album and a renewed artistic vision. About the Musicians: Danilo Rea is a graduate of the Santa Cecilia Conservatory and has performed with jazz greats like Chet Baker and Joe Lovano, as well as Italian icons Mina and Pino Daniele. Enzo Pietropaoli, a prominent figure in Italian jazz, has collaborated with major international artists and built a rich recording career. ZULI Builds on the 'Lambada' Universe with New EP 'Care'

Built between Cairo and Berlin, ZULI's Care dives deeper into the soundscape of 2024's Lambda, blending R&B mutations, field recordings, and ambient fragments into four dense, layered tracks. Jun 22, 2025 Berlin-based Egyptian producer ZULI releases 'Care', a four-track EP that expands the his 2024's LP 'Lambda'. Developed between Cairo and Berlin, the release includes two original tracks and two reimaginings, offering a study in melancholy, detail, and immersive storytelling. The lead track, 'Care', opens with a field recording of ZULI tapping an unplugged guitar. A sudden street fight in Cairo, accidentally captured in the background, forms part of its atmospheric core. The result is a piece equally rooted in restraint and intensity. 'Elysian Blue' continues the textural approach of 'Lambda', using minimalist melody and drifting ambience to conjure emotional residue. The EP also includes a remix of 'Ast' (feat. Coby Sey), with Berlin's Ludwig Wandinger reshaping its R&B DNA into something soulful, surreal, and dream-like.
