Fired-up Alas Pilipinas Men off to Bahrain for AVC Nations Cup
It's the turn of Alas Pilipinas Men to ply their trade against several powerhouse teams in the continent as they see action in the 2025 AVC Men's Volleyball Nations Cup starting on June 17 in Manama, Bahrain.
The Filipinos are hoping to build on their three-game sweep in the Alas Pilipinas Invitationals the country hosted last week, where the Philippines reigned over guest teams from Indonesia, South Korea, and Thailand.
Former collegiate MVPs Louie Ramirez and Marck Espejo took turns leading the squad to a 3-0 romp.
Ramirez, a two-time NCAA MVP out of Perpetual, starred in their 25-23, 27-29, 25-21, 25-22 win against Jakarta Bhayangkara Presisi before former Ateneo star Espejo handled it from there, leading the charge against Korean V. League champion Hyundai Capital Skywalkers and Thailand national team.
They now shift into higher gear in the Nations Cup, where they will slug it out against two higher-ranked squads in the preliminary round.
Alas will open its campaign against a formidable foe in Pakistan at 7 p.m. on Tuesday with the latter hoping to improve from its runner-up finish last year. Pakistan previously fell to world no. 24 Qatar in the 2024 edition, absorbing a 25-22, 25-20, 25-19 sweep loss in the finals.
Alas will then take on world no. 45 Chinese Taipei on June 18 at 7 p.m. to close out the eliminations.
The top two teams from each pool will advance to the quarterfinals while the rest will be relegated to the classification phase. The tournament winner will gain the lone ticket to the 2026 Asian Championship.

Kungfu Reyes is bringing his coaching brilliance to Mendiola after being tapped to be the new head coach of San Beda University women's volleyball team. The school announced the development on Saturday as the Lady Red Spikers try to revive their program following years of consecutive Final Four misses in the NCAA. Reyes, who recently dropped his women's coaching duty with University of Santo Tomas to focus on being the program director, now became the fifth head coach of San Beda in the last five seasons. Nemesio Gavino called the shots when the league returned after the pandemic in Season 97 before he was replaced by Ariel Dela Cruz in Season 98. Dela Cruz didn't last long either after San Beda tapped renowned tactician Edgar Barroga in Season 99 until the latter was let go midway through Season 100. Joshua Noda then came in as the interim head coach, leading the Lady Red Spikers to a 4-14 win-loss record finish in the centennial edition. Cha Cuñada finds new fulfillment in deputy role for Letran Lady Knights
NCAA By BEA MICALLER,GMA Integrated News Known for her calm demeanor on the court as a player, Cha Cuñada now brings that same steady presence to the Colegio de San Juan de Letran women's volleyball coaching staff in the NCAA. The 25-year-old former outside spiker admitted she was never the vocal leader back in her playing years and hat's exactly what she is using now in guiding the next generation of the Lady Knights. "Mostly po talaga, [ang trabaho ko sa team ay] para lang nila akong ate. Parang ako kumbaga 'yung taga-balance sa team kasi syempre si coach 'pag nagagalit, so parang sa akin sila nagra-rant or humihingi ng advice," Cuñada told GMA News Online. "Pero at the same time, sa skills din kasi naging player din naman ako kaya tumulong-tulong din ako pagdating sa drill. Pinagkakatiwalaan din naman ako ni Coach O (Oliver Almadro) and 'yung mga players alam ko naman na nakikinig din naman sila sa akin." As a silent operator, Cuñada made sure her game did the talking. The 5-foot-5 hitter suited up for both the indoor and beach volleyball teams for Letran from Season 94 to Season 98, a stretch that saw her leading the Lady Knights to a beach volleyball crown in Season 98 and bagging the MVP plum in the process. She has now transitioned to coaching, helping Letran head coach Oliver Almadro full-time since Season 99 as they look to lead the rebirth of the Lady Knights. Cuñada admitted that transitioning from player to coach wasn't easy, especially since many of the players on the current roster were once her teammates, making it tricky to strike the right balance in her new role. "At first, mahirap kasi maraming players dito 'yung naabutan pa akong maglaro, sina Lara, si Nathalie [Estreller], si Juday [Nitura]. So parang ang hirap, hindi ko alam kung paano 'yung magiging approach ko sa kanila," Cuñada, who previously had stints with Chery Tiggo and Cignal, added. Letran clinches QF ticket in Filoil Preseason tilt; Arellano upsets Mapua

The Knights became the first team to book a playoff ticket as they improved to 7-1, good for solo lead in the NCAA bracket while the Stags remained winless at 0-8. Deo Cuajao continued to lead the Knights with 11 points while Jimboy Estrada and Jonathan Manalili each poured in 10 markers with the former also grabbing seven rebounds, two assists, and one block to lift the former three-time NCAA champions. But even with the win and a quarterfinals seat, incoming second-year Letran head coach Allen Ricardo stressed the Knights still have plenty of work to do moving forward. "Although we won the game, shaky on both ends, offense and defense. Hindi ko nakita 'yung tamang attitude at body language," said Ricardo. In other games, Arellano University and University of Perpetual Help System DALTA gutted out wins to bolster their respective campaigns. The Chiefs squeaked past defending NCAA champion Mapua University with a nail-biting 76-73 win behind the heroics of guard T-mc Ongotan. Ongotan buried a triple that turned a slim 72-71 lead to a four-point advantage for the Chiefs in the final two minutes of the fourth period. But veteran Mapua guard Cyrus Cuenco responded with a layup off a Marc Igliane assist to cut the gap to two, 75-73. Ongotan then split his charities following a foul from Yam Concepcion, sealing it for an Arellano side that was coming off a two-point loss to surging Emilio Aguinaldo College. Perpetual, on the other hand, banked on a game-winning basket of Patrick Sleat to eke out a 65-64 win against Jose Rizal University. The former FEU standout buried a clutch floater with 29 seconds left to hand the ALTAs their second straight victory after a tough 1-4 start in the tournament. In the UAAP side of things, Far Eastern University turned to a big double-double outing from big man Mo Konateh in surviving Adamson University in overtime, 68-66.
