Filipino, Indonesian illegals jailed

Kota Kinabalu: Thirteen illegal immigrants comprising Filipinos and Indonesians were jailed four months each. Aesimal Landu, Al paisal Abdullah, Azlan Husin Asidin, Esam Ayudin, Omar Abdul Salleh, Radzmil Umad, Rian Zulkifli, Sadri Landu, Sarah Indang, Albinar Julasdi, Sitti Yalin Julasdi, Parak Baki and Nurjima Salimuddin, aged 22 and 50, all pleaded guilty separately before Sessions Court Judge Hurman Hussain, to entering the State without their valid documents. The illegal immigrants were arrested by the Immigration team who carried out operation in Papar, Tenom, Kota Belud, Kota Marudu and Kudat in May this year. During the operation, they failed to produce their identification documents to the Immigration personnel. In asking for leniency, they informed the court that they had stayed in the State without documents for several months and years and worked as labourers, carpenters and farmers. Advertisement They asked to be deported to their respective hometowns as soon as possible. The court ordered the illegal immigrants to serve the jail sentence from the date of their arrests. After completing their jail sentence, all of them were ordered referred to the Immigration Department for further action. 5 airport police allegedly involved in extortion of taxi drivers sacked, says DOTr
The five airport police who are named in an alleged extortion scheme with taxi drivers have been suspended, Department of Transportation (DOTr) Vince Dizon said in a statement. Secretary Dizon also ordered the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) to conduct an investigaton "in line with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s directive to government workers to serve the Filipinos and not to abuse their authority." 'Paulit-ulit na sinasabi ng Pangulo na dapat hindi natin pinapahirapan ang mga kababayan natin,' Secretary Dizon said. (The President repeatedly says that we should not make our countrymen suffer.) A taxi driver, who went viral for overcharging a passenger, earlier told Secretary Dizon that drivers at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) charge high taxi fares because they have to give 40 percent of their earnings to the airport police. 'According dun sa kwento ni Felix [Taxihub] ang nagpapatakbo ng raket dito ay yung airport police. Sila ang nagiimpose ng mahal na rate at dun sa mamahaling rate na yun kumukuha sila ng 40-percent kaya ang naghihirap yung mga pasahero natin,' Secretary Dizon said in a statement. (According to Felix [Taxihub], the one running the racket here is the airport police. They are the ones who impose expensive rates and from that expensive rate, they take 40-percent, so our passengers are suffering.) 'Pagka hindi ka sumunod at nagcharge ka ng mababa at hindi nagremit nung hinihingi nila, either huhulihin ka o hindi ka papapasukin ng airport,' he added. (If you don't comply and charge less and don't remit what they ask, you will either be arrested or the airport will not let you in.) PH grants Taiwan passport holders visa-free entry starting July 1, 2025
The Philippine government announced it is granting Taiwan passport holders a visa-free entry starting July 1, 2025. In a social media post, the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) said Taiwan passport holders may enter the country for tourism purposes 'without a visa for a non-extendible and non-convertible period of 14 days.' The following requirements need to be presented: -passport valid for at least six months -confirmed hotel accommodation/booking -proof of financial capacity -return ticket or onward ticket to the next country of destination For Taiwan passport holders intending to stay in the Philippines for more than 14 days or for purposes other than tourism, a visa shall be required with the following requirements: -duly accomplished and signed visa application form -passport valid for at least six months -Taiwan ID -proof of round -rip ticket reservation, if any -visa application fee 'For other visa categories such as applications for multiple-entry visa, crew-list visa, and long-term visa, the standard requirements and procedures shall remain applicable,' MECO said. Earlier, Taiwan extended the visa-free privilege for Filipinos, as well as citizens of Thailand and Brunei for one year or from August 1, 2025 to July 31, 2026. Public warned vs ‘task scams' via messaging apps
Authorities cautioned the public from taking part in 'task scams' sent via messaging apps where victims are given assignments in exchange for cash before being convinced to "invest" their money in return for quick profits. In her report on Thursday's 24 Oras, Darlene Cay said victim 'Bea' lost P9,800 in an 'investment', most of which is money she just borrowed. Bea said she was encouraged to send money via a digital link after she initially saw it quickly gain profits. However, after she sent a larger sum, the money was never returned and the person she was transacting blocked her. Pearl, another victim, said she lost P38,000 through the same scheme. She said the scammers sound very professional and convincing. Pearl said she participated because she was looking for a way to earn extra money. Despite her pleas, the scammer ignored her messages and later blocked her. 'Work from anywhere' Via unsolicited messages through messaging apps, people introducing themselves as members of a digital marketing agency offer "work from anywhere" opportunities. Victims are enticed by earning as much as P9,000 daily just by clicking 'likes' of products in different shopping apps. According to the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC), task scams lure victims with the promise of earning easy money. 'Pasasakayin ka e. Kunwari bibigyan ka ng mga gagawin mo para kumita ka ang mabigat kasi dito, grupo grupo rin yan,' said Undersecretary Gilbert Cruz, PAOCC Executive Director. It is possible syndicates use easy catchers or devices that have the capability to access telephone numbers, messages and data from the smartphones of potential victims. Cruz said the scammers would get these cellphone numbers and would initiate a text blast. If a person's phone receives an ad, he or she could then be convinced by scammers to join by completing their assigned tasks. The phone numbers could also have been sourced from phones whose users clicked on phishing websites according to the Cybercrime Investigation Coordinating Center. CICC Deputy Executive Director Assistant Secretary Renato Paraiso said possible victims could have provided their names, numbers and email addresses believing they were taking part in a promotional event or a discount but these details could be sold to scammers. PAOCC said it is continuing to investigate the said scam which it believes is being operated by Filipinos. Be suspicious Authorities advised jobseekers that no legitimate employer would ask money in exchange for employment and that they would not contact you via messaging apps if you did not apply in the first place. 'Employers do not get in touch with individuals they pass through channels or platforms. Nobody calls from a company to offer a job to somebody. People should be suspicious by this system alone,' said Serge Ortiz-Luis, President of the Employers Confederation of the Philippines. —RF, GMA Integrated News
