Switzerland: Watch exports fall in May after record sales in April

Following substantial deliveries to the US in April, in light of impending tariffs, Swiss watch exports declined in May. However, the 'boomerang effect' proved less pronounced than anticipated, according to the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry (FH). After a significant increase of 18.2 percent in April, Swiss watch exports across all markets fell by 9.5 percent to 2.1 billion Swiss francs in May. 40 percent of this decline can be attributed to reduced shipments to the US, the FH announced in a statement on Thursday. This 'significant decline' was expected, given the substantial increase in the previous month. In April, watch exports to the US saw an exceptional year-on-year increase of 149.2 percent. Swiss watchmakers had attempted to rapidly build up inventories in the US market to safeguard against potential tariffs. In May, shipments there fell by 25.3 percent. However, the FH noted that this 'boomerang effect' was 'more moderate than expected'. The White House's announcements in early April regarding reciprocal tariffs came in the midst of the Geneva Watch Fair and acted as a shock to the industry, which must produce its watches in Switzerland to bear the coveted 'Made in Switzerland' label. Since 2021, the US has been the most important sales market for Swiss watchmakers. Demand there has surpassed that from China and Hong Kong. With the decline in May, global watch exports since the beginning of the year totalled 10.8 billion francs – a 1.1 percent increase compared to the first five months of 2024. "However, this result does not reflect the actual sales situation, which has seen a less favourable development," the association warned. The export figures do not reflect actual sales, but rather retail orders as retailers replenish their inventories. Watch exports also declined in other markets in May: by 17.4 percent to China, 10.5 percent to Japan and 12.6 percent to Hong Kong. In Europe, exports fell by 14.5 percent to the UK, 18.1 percent to France and four percent to Germany. This article was translated to English using an AI tool. ASOS is permanently closing customer accounts without warning and people are furious

ASOS is permanently closing customer accounts without warning and people are furious Frequent returners who shop at the online fashion retailer now risk having their accounts permanently closed ASOS have made another controversial change to their 'fair use' policy which impacts returns (Image: © 2018 SOPA Images/Getty ) Online fashion retail giant ASOS are now closing customers accounts because of their return activity. ASOS came under fire in September after they announced their new "fair use" policy, which introduced return charges for certain customers who the retailer said made returns too frequently. The retailer had previously offered UK shoppers free returns of unused items within 14 days, but wrote to some shoppers saying it had updated its "fair use" policy to clamp down on frequent returners. Those signed up to the group's Premier subscription service were told they would have to keep at least £15 of their original order to escape a fee, while non-subscription shoppers who regularly send back large amounts would have to keep at least £40 of their orders. ‌ However the retailer is now clamping down on returns even further and has contacted some customers to say that their accounts will be closed due to their return activity. ‌ An email sent out to affected customers said: "Some time ago, we contacted you to inform you of certain changes made to our Fair Use Policy. "After reviewing your recent return activity again, you are still part of a small group of customers whose shopping behaviour continues to breach our Fair Use Policy. For this reason, we have decided to close your account. "We're letting you know that your account will be closed in 30 days. Please note that this also applies to any other accounts you currently have or may try to open in the future." One frustrated customer posted a video on TikTok about her account being closed. @vmyellen said: "ASOS I'm really mad at you" From superstar gigs to cosy pubs, find out What's On in Wales by signing up to our newsletter here Article continues below She added that she had contacted customer services but was told the decision was final before the chat was closed. People in the comments were similarly confused about ASOS's decision One person said: "Lol, l I just had an email this morning saying they were closing my account because I'd 'breached the fair use policy'. 105 orders over the past 10 years and I definitely keep WAY more than I return. I tried to log a complaint and every time I ask on the chat they just paste the policy and close the chat." Content cannot be displayed without consent ‌ A second customer added: "Been shopping with them since about 2006; I lived on the website at one point and 95% of my wardrobe was ASOS. In the last five or so years their quality has been abysmal and seeing how they are now treating seemingly innocent customers has disgusted me. "No wonder people are returning a lot when everything is so badly made. So I just deleted my account and deleted the app. Good bye to old news." Another ASOS customer took to X to say that despite spending £100 a month on the website, their account had been closed. Hours later, the official ASOS Instagram account asked if they could use a photo posted by the customer showcasing their clothes. ‌ Content cannot be displayed without consent "Obsessed with asos banning me from being a customer because the majority of their clothes are awful quality or botched sizing and therefore need to be returned," another person wrote on X. However, some people defended ASOS and said that it's costly for businesses when so many people are returning items often. One wrote: "Not excusing asos but the reason it's different from in store is because the cost of orders and returns for online is so much higher and they lose a significant amount of money on returns, whereas that doesn't happen with in store purchases." New sneaker brand Solk unveils its first biocircular shoe

After developing millions of shoes for global brands such as Adidas, On Running, Helly Hansen and Zara, David Solk and Irmi Kreuzer decided to launch their own brand, combining comfort, style and responsibility. At the Global Fashion Summit, which also addressed the rights of nature, they presented their first model, the 'Fade 101' sneaker, which is durable and compostable. 'For decades, we produced shoes for other brands. Now, we have built the kind of product we always hoped someone would: one that feels great and leaves no harm behind,' comments Solk in a press release. Made to fade. Credits: Solk All components of the 'Fade 101' were developed, according to the Swiss brand, based on strict criteria, as they must be completely harmless to people and the environment at the end of the product's life. The choice fell on chrome-free leather ('from responsibly kept European cattle'), a 100 percent bio-based and seamlessly knitted inner lining that avoids textile waste, straps, laces made of Tencel and yarns, as well as a sole made of pure natural rubber and compostable foam. 'Every fibre, every stitch, every material choice, the design and manufacturing and the end-of-life solution has been made with one goal: to be ultimately harmless to our environment,' explains Solk. The sole of the 'Fade 101' is made of pure natural rubber and compostable foam. Credits: Solk The choice of the upper material, leather, is surprising, however, as leather takes 50 years or more to decompose; most natural fibres such as cotton (a couple of months) or wool (about four years) decompose much faster. The leather cutting is AI-controlled to reduce waste and is done on machinery specially repurposed for Solk. At the end of the product lifecycle, Solk takes back worn-out sneakers and turns them into compost in its in-house composting process. All materials were previously independently tested for over 200 potentially hazardous substances and for their plant compatibility after composting. From shoe to compost. Image: Solk Production takes place in the brand's own factory in Vietnam. This allows the brand to maintain control over materials, methods and fair working conditions. The 'Fade 101' is available in four colourways — Ivory, Black, Sand and Ember — and costs around 250 euros. The sneaker can be pre-ordered now on the brand's website, with delivery expected in October. This article was translated to English using an AI tool.
