Curfew order for serial car thief who raided Forfar garage
A one-man crimewave who accelerated away in a test drive car before taking part in a midnight raid on a Forfar garage has been spared jail.
Robbie Mill, who has been in and out of detention for stealing Range Rovers from driveways in Dundee, pretended to be interested in buying a man's Fiat Punto, before he jumped into the driver's seat and sped off.
Days later, he smashed his way into a repair centre in Forfar's Carseview Road and drove away in a customer's Ford Focus.
The 21-year-old appeared at Forfar Sheriff Court for sentencing, having previously pled guilty to the thefts in April and May 2023.
The court heard how one of Mill's victims had advertised his Fiat Punto for sale online.
Mill answered the advert and made an appointment to view the motor, using his own mobile phone number.
When he met the car's owner at his home in Yarrow Place, Mill wandered round the car as if he was carrying out an external inspection.
He then jumped into the vehicle and drove off.
Mill, who was on three bail orders at the time, was originally charged with assaulting the seller, forcibly pushing him and robbing him of the Punto.
He pled guilty to a lesser charge of stealing the car on April 24 2023.
The court heard how the vehicle was later found abandoned with Mill's DNA on the steering wheel and handbrake.
A pair of socks was also recovered from inside the car.
Mill struck again less than two weeks later, this time targeting Forfar repair centre JM Automotive in the early hours of May 6.
Detectives found a window at the Carseview Road office had been smashed and several keys inside were missing.
A Land Rover from inside the yard had been used to ram open the gates.
It was found about 40 feet away from the exit.
Mill made off in a customer's Ford Focus ST, worth about £5,000.
The vehicle was caught on CCTV leaving the yard at about 2.50am.
At 3.35am, it pulled into the Shell garage on Cairnie Road, Arbroath.
Mill filled it with £36.46 worth of fuel before leaving without paying.
The stolen car was later found abandoned, damaged and wouldn't start.
JM Automotive posted a statement on Facebook following the raid.
The company's spokesman wrote: 'As a small business owner in these tough times I am absolutely gutted.
'So much hard work that has gone into this place over the past two years to make it what it is today, only to have the place trashed and valued customers' cars stolen so some wee idiots can have a joyride is absolutely disgusting.'
He added: 'Can't even imagine the time and money this is going to take up.
'Extra security measures will be taken from now on to ensure the safety of our tools, equipment and any vehicle on the property.'
Mill pled guilty to breaking into the repair centre, stealing keys and taking the Ford Focus, as well as stealing fuel later that morning.
He further admitted driving while disqualified.
The court heard he could not do unpaid work because of a leg injury.
Sheriff Jillian Martin-Brown imposed a restriction of liberty curfew, ordering him to stay home between 9.30pm and 7am each night for seven months and two weeks.
He was banned from driving for five months.
In January, Mill was jailed for 17 months for stealing Range Rovers from driveways in Dundee.
But he was freed following a successful appeal against his sentence weeks later.
Appeal court judges quashed his jail term and imposed unpaid work.
He has so far been spared jail for a catalogue of offending, including causing serious injuries to two schoolgirls in a major A90 crash and having sex with underage girls – one of whom he impregnated.

Kevin Devine downed drinks at an Italian airport and on board a flight to Edinburgh before acting aggressively towards air stewards after learning his long term partner was leaving him. The oil and gas worker shouted and swore, refused to fasten his seatbelt when requested to and made a telephone call during the flight from Catania, Sicily to Edinburgh Airport. He also repeatedly gesticulated and adopted an aggressive demeanour towards three members of the cabin crew while on board the easyJet aircraft on September 27 last year. Shocked staff were forced to alert the police to Devine's rowdy behaviour and after landing at the Scottish capital officers boarded the plane and arrested the drunk 52-year-old. Devine pleaded guilty to three offences under The Air Navigation Order and Civil Aviation Act when his case called at Edinburgh Sheriff Court last month and sentence was deferred to last Thursday, June 19. The court was told Devine, from Dundee, had been excused attendance at the hearing as he is currently out of the country for several months working off shore with the oilfield services company Saipem. Sheriff Thomas Welsh agreed to deal with the matter in his absence and sentenced the North Sea quality control coordinator to pay a total fine of £1,475 to mark the offences. Devine, who also owns the real estate firm Devine Property Holdings Ltd, had been returning home after several weeks away when the ship he had been working on dropped him off at Sicily. While waiting on his flight at the island's Catania Airport the father of two telephoned his partner who told him she was leaving him and didn't want to see him on his return to Scotland. He was said to have become upset and began drinking alcohol in the airport lounge before continuing to down drinks while travelling home onboard the easyJet flight. The off shore engineer then became aggressive towards cabin crew after they warned him to stop using his vape and not to make telephone calls during the flight. Devine refused instructions to secure his seatbelt on take off and landing and shouted and swore at cabin crew members Colin Robinson, Lauren Hannah and Demi Gardner. A passenger who witnessed the drunken outburst said Devine had been 'a complete nightmare' during the flight. They said: 'The guy didn't seem too drunk when we took off but he began drinking during the flight and soon became abusive towards the crew. 'He was using his vape on a good few occasions, which was a complete disregard for all the other passengers, and was also on his phone to someone. 'He seemed quite upset about something and was shouting and swearing at the easyJet staff who had politely asked him to stop. 'The crew tried to take the vape off him but he wouldn't hand it over and they just didn't have any choice but to inform the police about his behaviour. 'He totally deserved to be arrested when we landed in Edinburgh and to be honest he was a complete nightmare during the flight.' 'Drug dealer' killed mum-of-one after knocking her off e-bike with Land Rover
A driver has been found not guilty of murder after he hit and killed a woman and seriously injured her partner with his car. Keaton Muldoon hit 25-year-old Alana Armstrong and Jordan Newton-Kay with his Land Rover Discovery on a country lane in Pleasley, Derbyshire. The couple were riding on an electric motorbike together last November 26. Alana, a 25-year-old mum of one, died at the scene while her partner Jordan had his right leg amputated 15cm above the knee after the crash. Muldoon, 23, admitted causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving before his trial began. Muldoon, who the court heard was a drug dealer, told the jury he 'did not know' he had hit anyone with his car. He said he thought he'd overtaken Mr Newton-Kay's e-bike at a passing point. The prosecution claimed Muldoon 'pursued' the couple, as well as another electric bike ridden by one of Mr Newton-Kay's friends, after they stopped near his 4×4 in a lay-by. CCTV showed the Land Rover following both e-bikes before ramming into one of the bikes and driving away without stopping. But following a trial at Derby crown court he was found not guilty of murder and of causing grievous bodily harm with intent. He also admitted lying to police, saying his uncle was in possession of the Land Rover at the time of the crash because he was 'scared' about the murder investigation. Muldoon had only recently become a father at the time of the crash and told the court: 'My head was all over, I didn't know what to think. 'I knew I wasn't going to see my children for a bit. I just had a newborn baby. I promised I would always be there.' A sentencing date for Muldoon has not yet been set.
