Queensland State of Origin coach Billy Slater has publicly apologised after linking late Queensland coach Paul Green to a comment made by former NSW prop Aaron Woods.
Slater was asked to respond to being called a "grub" by Woods on Sydney radio, and was visibly emotional when making a reference to Green, who died in 2022.
In a dramatic precursor to State of Origin II, the Maroons coach Slater questioned former NSW forward Woods's right to have a voice in the media after copping heat from him last week.
However, the 41-year-old called a snap press conference on Wednesday morning in Perth ahead of game two of the State of Origin series, and apologised for referencing Green.
"Yesterday I wrongly made the link between Paul Green's death and the stress and pressures of coaching, which wasn't accurate and nor was it appropriate,'' he said.
"I feel terrible about what I said and I spoke to [Green's wife] Amanda Green this morning and apologised for any hurt it may have caused her or her family.
"I just want to say this, Paul had CTE [chronic traumatic encephalopathy]. That is a different disease to what I was referring to.
"I am deeply and genuinely sorry.''
Green took his own life aged 49 in 2022 one year after coaching Queensland. Post-mortem scans on his brain revealed he had a severe form of CTE.

Slater was speaking alongside Maroons skipper Cameron Munster at a media opportunity on Tuesday when he was asked about Woods's comments, and ended a lengthy response by referencing Green.
"You don't know what people are going through," he said.
"And although I might be able to handle it, the next person mightn't be. Maybe our last coach didn't.
"I believe the character of a person is judged more on what they say about people and how they treat people, than what an individual says to create attention."
Slater is under immense pressure coming in to Origin II, with Queensland needing a win to avoid losing a second consecutive series to NSW after last year's upset.
A loss at Perth Stadium against the Blues would make Slater's Maroons the first Queensland side to lose four consecutive State of Origin matches since 1996-97.
The Maroons, then led by Paul Vautin, were swept 3-0 in the 1996 series and then lost the first two games of the 1997 series before winning the third and final game to go down 2-1.

Warriors v Panthers live updates: Andrew Webster's side host defending NRL champions

Live updates of the NRL clash between the New Zealand Warriors and Penrith Panthers at Go Media Stadium. Kurt Capewell has been left out of the Warriors side to face the Penrith Panthers this weekend as he gets set for his first State of Origin stint of the series. Coach Andrew Webster has opted against including the Queensland second rower for Saturday evening's sold-out clash at Go Media Stadium, citing a long flight back to Auckland after Wednesday night's Origin game 2, played in Perth. Queensland coach Billy Slater last week highlighted Capewell's leadership qualities as a key reason for his recall to the side. 'We just felt Kurt Capewell had been doing really well at club level and his actions had earnt him an opportunity to come into the team,' Slater said. With Rocco Berry and Ali Leiataua still sidelined with injuries, Webster has called on youngster Moala Graham-Taufa to replace Capewell, in what will be his first NRL game of the season after three appearances last year. The 23-year-old has been playing for the club's table-topping New South Cup side, scoring 11 tries in 12 matches. Webster has made only one other change to the starting lineup that thumped the Cronulla Sharks 40-10, with seasoned hooker Wayde Egan returning from a hip injury that ruled him out of the round 14 clash. He comes into the side in place of Sam Healey, who impressed in the Cronulla victory. Prop Tanner Stowers-Smith has been named on the interchange for his third NRL appearance after today re-signing with the Warriors until 2028. The last time the two sides met was back in Magic Round in Brisbane last season, with the Warriors pulling off a major upset against the defending champions 22-20. They come into Saturday evening's game in an unfamiliar position against the Panthers – as heavy favourites. It will also be the first time in six years that Penrith has made the trip to Auckland. After a bye round last week, the Warriors sit in third spot on the NRL ladder and are hunting their 11th win of the season. Warriors: 1. Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad, 2. Dallin Watene-Zelezniak, 3. Adam Pompey, 4. Moala Graham-Taufa, 5. Roger Tuivasa-Sheck, 6. Chanel Harris-Tavita, 7. Luke Metcalf, 8. James Fisher-Harris (c), 9. Wayde Egan, 10. Marata Niukore, 11. Leka Halasima, 12.
