George Russell wins Canadian Grand Prix

Motorsports
British driver George Russell of Mercedes has won the Canadian Grand Prix, ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen just 0.228 seconds behind, with Russell's Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli in third, 1.014 seconds behind the leader.
The race ended behind a safety car after McLaren's Lando Norris collided with his teammate Oscar Piastri and damaged his vehicle on the 67th of 70 laps. Norris took full responsibility for the error when communicating with his team on the team radio, saying he was 'stupid' for attempting the inside pass.
Piastri finished fourth after eight straight races on the podium this season.
The podium finish mirrored the results in qualifying on Saturday. Russell won the pole for the sixth time in his career. Verstappen was second, and Piastri, who leads the driver standings with 186 points, started from the third position.
Russell also started from the pole position last year at the Canadian GP, but Verstappen won that race for the third straight year.
It's Russell's fourth career F1 victory after winning the Sao Paulo Grand Prix in 2022, followed by victories last year in Austria and Las Vegas.
Montrealer Lance Stroll was the last of 17th drivers to complete the race.

F1 rookie Kimi Antonelli passes his final exams to graduate from high school

BOLOGNA, Italy (AP) — Formula 1 rookie Kimi Antonelli passed his final exams to graduate from high school back home in Italy just like he's been passing other cars on tracks around the world: without trouble. The 18-year-old Mercedes driver made the announcement in an Instagram story Monday, saying 'promosso' — 'passed' — with a photo of himself wearing a laurel wreath. After claiming his first podium result with a third-place finish at the Canadian Grand Prix, Antonelli returned home to Casalecchio di Reno, near Bologna, to take his exams. 'I was fairly stressed, because I didn't have much time to study. But I did my best,' Antonelli told reporters after taking the first portion of exams last week. He said English is his favorite subject 'because that's the one that comes easiest for me.' Antonelli added that he wanted to complete the exams, which included both written and oral sections, before the upcoming Austrian GP 'so I can focus full time on racing.' ___ AP auto racing:

Former England cricketer David Lawrence dies at 61

Gloucestershire [UK], June 22 (ANI): Gloucestershire Cricket announced the unfortunate demise of former cricketer and club president David 'Syd' Lawrence at the age of 61. A statement from the club said, 'Gloucestershire Cricket is deeply saddened to announce the passing of our Club President, David 'Syd' Lawrence MBE, at the age of 61. In his final year, Syd faced Motor Neurone Disease with the same courage and determination that defined his cricketing life. The cricket world rallied behind him, with fundraising efforts led by the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA), a charity endorsed by both Syd and his family, and supported by the wider cricketing community.' Fundraising efforts culminated in Pink 4 Syd, a special evening where the Club honoured Syd with a pink kit and raised vital funds for MNDA during Gloucestershire Men v Hampshire Hawks in the T20 Blast on June 20. Born in Gloucester on 28 January 1964, David Valentine Lawrence made his debut for Gloucestershire at just 17. Over a 16-year career, he became a Club icon - known for his thunderous run-up, fearless fast bowling, and ever-present energy. He formed a formidable new-ball partnership with West Indies great Courtney Walsh and delivered countless memorable performances. He played 170 first-class matches for Gloucestershire, taking 477 wickets at 31.27, including a best of 7 for 47 against Warwickshire. In one-day cricket, he claimed 148 wickets in 110 appearances, with a standout 6 for 20 against a Combined Universities XI in 1991 - the third best return in Gloucestershire's 50-over history. In 1990, Lawrence took a memorable hat-trick against Nottinghamshire in a fiery spell that saw him finish with 5 for 51. His county success earned him England honours. In 1988, he became the first British-born black man to play Test cricket for England, making his debut at Lord's against Sri Lanka. He played five Tests between 1988 and 1992, taking 18 wickets, including a famous five-wicket haul against the West Indies at The Oval in 1991 - in the same innings, he dismissed the great Viv Richards. He also made one ODI appearance, recording remarkable figures of 4 for 67, which remain the best bowling figures by a player who only played a single One Day International. A devastating knee injury in 1992 ended his international career prematurely, but Syd's life off the field was just as remarkable. He went on to become a nightclub owner, a competitive bodybuilder, and a leading advocate for inclusion and diversity in cricket. But his connection to Gloucestershire never faded. In 2022, he was appointed as the first British-born black President in the history of a professional county - a title he held at Gloucestershire Cricket until the day of his passing. The presidency was a significant and emotional return for a man who had given so much to the county, and who continued to champion its future. In 2025, he was awarded both an MBE for services to cricket, and an honorary England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) Life Vice Presidency - recognition of not just his playing career, but his work in the community and courage during his illness. Following his MND diagnosis in 2024, Syd remained open and defiant. In collaboration with cricket writer Dean Wilson, Syd published his autobiography, 'In Syd's Voice', using assistive technology to dictate his story. The book was widely praised for its honesty, humour, and strength, and it became a vital part of his legacy - capturing the personality and drive that had always set him apart. Syd became a powerful rallying figure across cricket, with events, charity matches, and donations pouring in from around the world. The Pink 4 Syd match at Bristol was both a celebration and a farewell - a night when cricket honoured one of its true characters. David's family has released the following statement: 'It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dave Lawrence MBE following his brave battle with Motor Neurone Disease. 'Syd' was an inspirational figure on and off the cricket field, and no more so than to his family, who were with him when he passed.' A proud Gloucestershire man, Syd took on every challenge with everything he could and his final contest with MND was no different. His willingness to encourage and think of others right up to the end was typical of the man he was.' As President of Gloucestershire County Cricket Club, Syd took on the role with incredible pride and passion and loved every minute of it. Syd's wife, Gaynor and son Buster thank everyone for the kindness and support that has been shown to them and the family so far and would ask that they are now given some time and space to grieve in private.' Peter Matthews, Club Chair, said, 'Firstly, everyone at the club sends their heartfelt condolences to Syd's family, who supported him so well during his illness. As a club, we will support them in any way we can. Syd was truly a Gloucestershire great, both on and off the field. As a player , he was one of our greatest ever fast bowlers, who deservedly earned Test Caps whilst with us. On retirement, he continued to be heavily involved with the club, and was both a supportive and active President. He will be hugely missed.' Neil Priscott, Chief Executive Officer of the Club said: 'Everyone connected with Gloucestershire County Cricket Club will be devastated by the news of Syd's passing, and we send all our love to his incredible family and friends.' 'All staff at Gloucestershire Cricket were, of course, aware of his fine record as a one-county man, but we all got to truly know and love him as our current President. He was passionate about the power of cricket and how our sport can touch people's lives. Syd pushed us to reach out to communities far and wide, and we shall continue to do that in his honour.' Tommy Fleetwood closer than ever at Travelers but still looking for first PGA Tour victory

CROMWELL, Conn. (AP) — Tommy Fleetwood has never come closer to his first PGA Tour victory. The 34-year-old Englishman led by three strokes with four holes to go in the Travelers Championship on Sunday and still had a one-stroke lead on No. 18 before two-putting from inside seven feet and watching Keegan Bradley steal the win. 'I'm upset now; I'm angry,' Fleetwood said calmly. 'I would love to, you know, just go and sulk somewhere — and maybe I will — but there's just no point making it a negative for the future, really. Just take the positives and move on.' Fleetwood has seven European Tour victories and been on two winning Ryder Cup teams, scoring the clinching point at Marco Simone two years ago. He has top five finishes in in all four majors, including runner-ups in the 2018 U.S. Open and the 2019 British. But he's 0 for 84 in regular PGA Tour events, earning the unwelcome distinction of being the best player on tour without a victory. He is the only player with to earn more than $30 million on tour without a win. 'Search goes on, I guess,' he said. 'When it happens, it will be very, very sweet.' Fleetwood's previous close calls also include the 2023 Canadian Open, when he lost to Canadian Nick Taylor, and the 2019 British, when he lost to Irishman Shane Lowry at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland. On Sunday, he lost to the U.S. Ryder Cup captain – and native New Englander – in front of a crowd chanting 'U-S-A! U-S-A!' 'If there's one guy around here that you're going to go against, obviously, Keegan's going to get the majority of support,' Fleetwood said. Fleetwood had two eagles in the span of three holes on Friday to share the second-round lead with Scottie Scheffler and Justin Thomas. The Englishman was alone atop the leaderboard heading into the final round, three strokes ahead. He started Sunday with three bogeys on the first four holes but gained some distance with birdies on Nos. 11 and 13. He was two shots ahead when Bradley made bogey on the 14th to fall three back. (Fleetwood missed a 6-foot birdie putt on No. 14 that could have further distanced him from the field.) Fleetwood still led with one hole to go when he left his approach on No. 18 on the front fringe. He putted to seven feet, with a chance to guarantee no worse than a playoff. But the par putt took a little jump after it appeared to hit a ball mark and rolled 14 inches past the hole. Bradley, on the same line, sank a 6-footer for birdie to win it. 'Keegan made birdie, so fair play to him. But still feel like from where I was, I should at least be in a playoff,' Fleetwood said. 'So, yeah, it's a crappy way to finish.' Bradley could sympathize. 'I know how hard it must be for him. He's just an unbelievable player, and he's fighting so hard to get his first win,' the Vermont native said after claiming his eighth tour victory and his second at the only current tournament in New England. 'It's a weird thing to be on the other side of that. I do feel bad for him, but I've got to go out and do what I need to do,' Bradley said. 'But he battled today, and I really hope that he gets his win soon.' Fleetwood was asked about the drought for the umpteenth time on Saturday night, when he had what appeared to be a comfortable three-stroke lead. He said with a laugh: 'I'm on top of a lot of stat lines for people that haven't won on the PGA Tour, so to always be a No. 1 at something is always nice.' Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. On Sunday, the smile was gone. 'In my mind, I've won loads of PGA Tour events. I just haven't done it in reality,' Fleetwood said. 'I'm sure that time will come if I keep working. 'I did plenty of things well enough this week to win. I didn't do that; it hurts. I obviously played great, I put myself in a great position, I was leading the tournament for 71 holes. I just want to make sure that I can put myself in this position as soon as possible again and try and correct what I did this time.' ___ AP golf:
