Man sentenced 10 years for death of 15-month-old daughter in 2013
PORTLAND, Ore. () — Darian McWoods was sentenced to 10 years in prison on Wednesday as a result of a plea deal for the death of his infant daughter more than a decade ago, according to the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office.

In 2018, McWoods was found guilty of multiple charges, including murder by abuse, after his 15-month-old daughter Kamaya Flores died in December 2013. An autopsy found methadone toxicity in her system as the cause of death, the Oregon State Medical Examiner's Office determined. The autopsy also found trace amounts of methamphetamine in her blood, broken ribs and proof of compression asphyxiation, meaning she was crushed until she couldn't breathe.
Though a jury unanimously convicted McWoods of all of the homicide allegations and other charges in 2018, the case was after prosecutors had dismissed two men from the jury pool who were Black, the same race as the defendant. The court of appeals called the process discriminatory.
The case was sent back to the Multnomah County Circuit Court for a retrial. On May 28, McWoods pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and first-degree criminal mischief.

A former bank employee has filed a lawsuit against Truist Bank alleging discrimination and retaliation after she said a prank involving the doll Chucky exacerbated her anxiety disorder, according to several reports. Debra Jones claims in the lawsuit that despite knowing she had a fear of dolls, her manager placed a Chucky doll, "the doll that kills people," on her chair in her office, the New York Post reported. Jones claimed in the lawsuit that after the incident she was diagnosed with PTSD, saying she had shared her fear of dolls with her manager at a company cookout and that it affected her disabilities, which include generalized anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder and the autoimmune disorder vitiligo, WRAL-TV reported. Jones claimed she was treated differently when she returned to work last year following two months of medical leave, accusing the bank of retaliating against her for needing to leave at 3 p.m. to treat her autoimmune disorder. After Jones returned to a new office and new manager she was "subjected to discrimination and retaliation based on her being a qualified individual with disabilities," according to the complaint. Her supervisors claimed that her coworkers "also needed time off," the lawsuit said, according to the station. Jones was let go in March after a manager told her she couldn't keep using her disabilities as an excuse, the lawsuit claimed, People magazine reported. Chucky comes from the 1988 horror movie "Child's Play," in which a dead serial killer inhabits a boy's doll and kills people. The lawsuit, filed in North Carolina in May, claims the bank violated the Americans with Disabilities Act and Jones is seeking compensatory damages. 1 shot at River North Lou Malnati's on Wells Street, Chicago police say
A 36-year-old man was shot in the arm outside a Lou Malnati's restaurant in River North Friday evening, Chicago police said. Chicago police said they were called to the pizza parlor in the 400 block of North Wells Street just after 7 p.m. Friday. According to CPD, two men on the sidewalk outside the restaurant got into a physical fight. One of the men pulled out a gun and opened fire, hitting the victim in the left arm. According to customers at the restaurant, the victim then ran inside the Lou Malnati's for help. Police said the victim was taken to Northwestern Hospital in good condition for treatment. No one is currently in custody. An investigation by Area Three Detectives is ongoing. The restaurant is closed for the rest of the night.

"Justice for Megan Essentials Bag Project" launched by family of University of Colorado student
The family of a University of Colorado Boulder student who was found deceased earlier this year hopes that helping others may help them find answers to her death. Trussell went missing in February, and her body was later found in Boulder Canyon in an area that her family says is known for encampments. Her death was ruled a suicide, but her family disputes that ruling. Megan Trussell's family launched the Justice for Megan Essentials Bag Project in hopes of connecting with the unhoused community, which may lead to information about her death. They said her phone was later discovered to have been sold by someone connected to that community. "We're approaching this drive with care and hope—believing that someone out there may remember something. Even the smallest detail could matter," said Trussell's mother, Vanessa Diaz. They're handing out essentials to the unhoused community and letting them know about a $1,000 reward for tips. The bags will contain hygiene items and snacks along with a flyer with Megan's story and photo and details on the reward. Her family hopes to assemble 50 bags and distribute them in early July.
