Jim Bob Cooter weighs in on progress this offseason from Indianapolis Colts WR AD Mitchell

Yahoo5 hours ago

By all accounts, Indianapolis Colts' second-year wide receiver AD Mitchell has had a very strong showing throughout the team's offseason programs.
"AD's had an exciting start to the offseason," said offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter. "He's really been playing good football out there. Getting open, making catches."

Even through the ups and downs that Mitchell experienced as a rookie, what also stood out was his ability to get open and create separation, particularly against man coverage. With Mitchell's combination of speed and route-running abilities, he can be a very difficult matchup.
However, overshadowing that playmaking potential in Year 1 were the miscues. Dropped passes, wrong or mistimed routes, and not being on the same page with the quarterback were all too prevalent.
This resulted in Mitchell catching just 45% of his 51 targets and a lack of playing time and opportunities as well. There were some weeks where, by snap count, he was the fifth wideout on the Colts' depth chart.
So the big thing for Mitchell as he enters Year 2 is finding that consistency.

"It's a consistency thing," Cooter added. "Like Shane's talked about with our offense, with our team, with a lot of our guys. Attacking each day with consistency, going out there if you're AD Mitchell and you have some really good ability to go get open and make great catches, well, that's going to be the expectation, day in and day out."
Year 2 is often when we see NFL players make the biggest developmental jump. For one, there is the comfort and confidence that comes with having an NFL season under their belt, but they also have a full offseason to work on their craft, rather than focusing on the pre-draft process.
Even in a crowded Colts' receiver room that also includes Michael Pittman, Josh Downs, and Alec Pierce, if Mitchell can take a step forward this season and find that consistency, more opportunities will come--in snaps, targets, and in the type of routes he's asked to run--because his skill set, and how he can stress various levels of the field, can add another element to this Colts' passing game.
"He's done a really nice job," Cooter added. "He's had a great attitude attacking this spring. He's had some opportunities in practice, and he's made the most of those things, and those will keep coming."

Where did the Eagles land in a PFF ranking of all 32 running back groups?

Eagles land at No. 4 in a PFF ranking of all 32 running back groups So, how good is the Philadelphia Eagles' offensive line? They're led by Jeff Stoutland, perhaps the best position coach in the game. Lately, any tailback behind them is assured of a Pro Bowl season. Miles Sanders made the NFL's all-star team in 2022. Philadelphia let him walk during the following offseason and didn't think twice about it. D'Andre Swift replaced him... another Pro Bowler... A tad over a year ago, Philadelphia did what most never thought was possible. They paid a running back a lot of money. There isn't anyone in the Delaware Valley who doesn't know how that turned out. For years, people asked a question. What might happen if the Eagles put an elite running back behind that offensive line? We have been answered. What happens is the best rushing season in franchise history. Pro Football Focus names the Eagles' RB unit among the top four in the NFL As good as Saquon Barkley has been for the Eagles, some pundits, while tossing around ideas about strategy, have suggested that maybe Philadelphia ought to hand him the ball less often. It sounds strange to say, doesn't it? The goal is to win. Saquon poses a threat to go the distance every time he touches the football. How do you give that guy fewer opportunities to do so? The answer is simple... After a heavy workload during the 2024-25 campaign, there's a fear that he may have taken too much punishment, so theories have shifted. There's a desire for a more balanced attack from the Eagles this time around. Less physical strain on Saquon means he is hopefully fresher and better rested for another postseason run. They have plenty of weapons for the passing game, and this next nugget might be the best news they receive all summer. Pro Football Focus recently ranked every NFL team's running back room. "Saquon Barkley's incredible 2024 season alone earns Philadelphia a high mark on this list. Postseason included, Barkley rushed for more than 2,500 yards last season while forcing 83 missed tackles and generating an astonishing 55 explosive runs." Those were the words of Dalton Wasserman. He's this story's author. He also sees value in A.J. Dillon and Will Shipley. "AJ Dillon and Will Shipley will be Barkley's backups in 2025. Dillon missed all of last season due to a neck injury but earned a solid 76.1 PFF rushing grade in 2023. Shipley tallied just 34 carries during his rookie campaign but could be the team's primary kick returner this season." This isn't rocket science. Rushing for 2,000 yards takes a lot out of the guy who does so, which is why we haven't seen any of the eight guys who have done it previously repeat the feat during the following season. The Eagles are going to score a lot of points, but less Saquon and more of a committee approach could unlock something dangerous. Will Shipley and A.J. Dillon are potentially two more secret weapons for the Eagles' offense

49ers' George Kittle teases Brock Purdy over massive contract extension

The post 49ers' George Kittle teases Brock Purdy over massive contract extension appeared first on ClutchPoints. San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle recently teased Brock Purdy over his massive contract extension. The franchise has locked up its quarterback for the foreseeable future, and now the pressure is on. After making the Super Bowl two seasons ago, San Francisco went through a very trying 2024 campaign. But the energy during mandatory minicamp and OTAs has been positive so far. Advertisement In an interview with Pat McAfee, Kittle joked about his starting quarterback's $265 million contract and his plans for Purdy this fall. 'He did get paid half a country, good for him. He's buying everything from here on out. Hopefully, he's paying for the Halloween party this year, and it's not me and Juice anymore.' The 49ers need to capitalize on their, on paper, very forgiving schedule D. Ross Cameron-Imagn Images Despite being in a competitive NFC West, San Francisco has what is considered the easiest schedule in the NFL. Head coach Kyle Shanahan's team only has four games against teams that made the postseason last year. Two of those clashes will come against the Los Angeles Rams, which won the 49ers division in 2024. Even with Los Angeles again looking formidable, San Francisco has a huge opportunity to grab its third NFC West title in four years. To do so, the team's star quarterback will need to take another step up in his development. Advertisement Purdy has been the ultimate overachiever throughout his career. After being the last pick in the 2021 draft, the Iowa State standout was not expected to start at this level until injuries to Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo gave him the opportunity of a lifetime. Purdy seized the moment, leading the 49ers to the NFC Championship game. The Queens Creek, Arizona native followed up that campaign with a Pro Bowl season that saw him lead the NFL in passer rating. The 49ers made it to Super Bowl LVIII, where they lost in a classic to the Kansas City Chiefs. Unfortunately, this group could not continue that momentum into 2024. The franchise ultimately suffered several injuries to its roster, which resulted in Purdy's stats dropping. To be fair to Purdy, he was also dealing with a nerve issue in his right elbow that definitely affected his production. But even with wideouts like Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk no longer on the roster, the onus will be on the 49ers' quarterback to bounce back and elevate the offense. There's still plenty of talent on this roster to contend in the NFC, particularly if Purdy regains his Pro Bowl form. 3 San Francisco 49ers in danger of getting cut after 2025 minicamp

The post 3 San Francisco 49ers in danger of getting cut after 2025 minicamp appeared first on ClutchPoints. The San Francisco 49ers had a disappointing season plagued by injuries and inconsistency. Now, they look to bounce back and reclaim their spot as NFC West champions. But not everyone will be around to see it happen. Three 49ers players are in danger of not making the roster after the 2025 minicamp concludes, and two of them formerly were roster locks. Advertisement John Lynch admits last season was a struggle, and the 49ers paid dearly for bad play and inconsistency around them. When the season began, many in the NFL believed they might contend for the Super Bowl after barely losing to the Kansas City Chiefs the previous season. Instead, they cratered. Injuries happened, and off-the-field incidents plagued the team. The 49ers are hopeful they can turn things around. Notably, a last-place schedule and a fresh roster give them some confidence. Nevertheless, some players may not be available. Russell Gage Jr. has struggled in the NFL Russell Gage Jr. has been inconsistent in his time in the NFL. So far, he has not played in two full seasons and might not be able to bounce back. Advertisement Gage was a sixth-round draft pick out of LSU in 2018. Notably, he has played 74 games in his career and started 25 of them. Things were going relatively smoothly until injuries hit. Due to numerous injuries and team changes, he has not played since 2022. Gage joined the 49ers roster in 2024, sliding into the practice squad. Gage is at minicamp and is attempting to make the final cut of the 49ers roster. However, he is behind several wide receivers on the roster. Even if Brandon Aiyuk misses time, Gage is still behind Jacob Cowing, Isaiah Neyor, Isaiah Hodgins, and Jordan Watkins in the pecking order. Gage needs to deliver an excellent performance in the 49ers minicamp to have a chance to make the roster. Robert Beal lacks the defense to be a lock The 49ers' special teams were atrocious in 2025. It was so bad that Kyle Shanahan fired Brian Schneider after the season, indicating that San Francisco needed to make changes. Advertisement Robert Beal was one of the few exceptions. After drafting him in the fifth round in 2023, the 49ers had high expectations for him. Beal thrived on the special teams, making plays when needed. Unfortunately, his season ended early, as an ankle injury sidelined him. When San Francisco drafted Beal, they saw him as a rotational piece who could contribute on defense. However, he has had just one sack in three full seasons. The 49ers loaded up on defense in the 2025 NFL Draft. Part of that was arguably because Beal was no longer seen as a reliable option on the defensive side. There is a chance that he can still make the roster due to his ability on special teams. However, the 49ers are deep at defensive end and might want to use a spot for a guy who can contribute on that side of the football. The only positive about Beal is that he is big, and coaches love how he gets off the edge. Still, he must show that he can do more and fully develop as an all-around player if he wants to be on the 49ers roster. Jake Moody must outkick the competition Many people believed the 49ers would draft a kicker to replace Jake Moody. Instead, they signed Greg Joseph to a one-year deal. That makes the 49ers minicamp very interesting. Now, there is a legitimate chance that Moody could not make the 49ers roster. This is very telling, as the 49ers drafted Moody with a third-round pick in 2023. Advertisement Moody went 11-for-20 on field-goal attempts last season, enduring one of the worst sophomore slumps seen in recent memory. Furthermore, many of his misses cost the 49ers some critical games. Moody missed a field goal in a 27-24 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. He missed three field goals against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before finally hitting the game winner. However, the list extends even further beyond that. In the previous season, Moody missed a critical extra point against the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl. Had he made that, the 49ers would have been up 17-13 instead of 16-13. Thus, it would have forced the Chiefs to go for a touchdown instead of a field goal with the clock running low. If that had happened, the 49ers might have won. Now, he has competition. If Moody cannot show in minicamp that he is the player the 49ers thought they were drafting, then there is a legitimate chance he won't be around once the 2025 season begins.
