Army pilot killed in helicopter training accident in Kentucky identified

A 40-year-old Army pilot was killed, and a second pilot was injured, in a helicopter training accident Wednesday evening at Fort Campbell in Kentucky, the Army post said.
The soldier killed was identified Friday by the 101st Airborne Division as Chief Warrant Officer 2 Dustin K. Wright.
In a post to social media earlier Friday, the 101st Airborne Division said the incident involving an AH-64 Apache helicopter had occurred in "preparation for the Army's 250th birthday," the festival and parade being held in Washington, D.C., to commemorate the Army's 250th anniversary — that also coincides with President Trump's 79th birthday.
However, in a follow-up post, the division said it wanted to "clarify" that the incident "occurred during a routine attack aviation training mission inside the Fort Campbell training area. The crew was not in direct support of Week of the Eagles or Army Birthday."
A spokesperson for the 101st Airborne Division also told CBS News by phone Friday that the training exercise had "100% nothing to do with the birthday parade in D.C." and was simply "happening while the Army prepares for the 250th birthday date."
Week of the Eagles is an annual event that honors the heritage of the 101st Airborne Division.
The injured pilot was treated and released from Blanchfield Army Community Hospital for minor injuries, officials said.
No further details were provided. The incident is under investigation.
Wright joined the Army in 2010 and had served at Fort Campbell since May 2022. He was highly-decorated, having been awarded the Air Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal and the Army Parachutist Badge, among others, his division said.
"The entire 101st Combat Aviation Brigade grieves the loss of CW2 Dustin Wright," Col. Tyler Partridge, commander of the 101st Combat Aviation Brigade, 101st Airborne Division, said in a statement Friday. "A former Infantryman, Dustin cherished every opportunity to be outside and support ground troops. He did so with strength and honor. We will forever cherish the memories of his service, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him."
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear was among those offering condolences to the family of the soldier who died.
"No matter how it happens, when we lose someone who has committed to serving our country, I know it hurts that family but it should hurt us all," the Democratic governor said Thursday.
Kentucky state Sen. Craig Richardson, whose western Kentucky district includes the Fort Campbell area, said the soldier's death was heartbreaking.
"This tragedy is a solemn reminder that the dangers our military faces are not limited to distant battlefields," the Republican lawmaker said. "The call to serve brings risks at home, in training, preparation, and quiet readiness."
The sprawling Fort Campbell post straddles the Kentucky-Tennessee line.

Aurora police investigate after woman struck by stray bullet while in bed

A Colorado mom is worried and angry after she was struck by a stray bullet while inside her home in Aurora. It was after midnight when she heard the gunshots, and then the bullet came through the wall. A bullet pierced the wall of the home in Aurora before striking the woman inside. CBS Danielle Smith has a new window to the outside in her bedroom. It's a tiny round one where a bullet came through. She can see daylight clearly. "There's another hole in the base of my daughter's floorboard coming from the outside and there's another hole in my neighbor's bedroom," said Smith. The bullet that made the hole continued through her arm, just inches from her head, after she had gone to bed Wednesday night to watch television. Three shots rattled the duplex after midnight. "The fourth shot actually is the one that hit me, and I just felt my shoulder explode," she shared. She wore a bandage, and it continued to bleed on Thursday evening. It was the second floor of a building in the 13000 block of E. 13th Place in Aurora, a few blocks from the Anschutz Medical campus. Police said she didn't appear to be the intended target and believe a stray bullet may have been fired from somewhere nearby. Officers said they didn't find any shell casings in the area around her home. The police department encouraged anyone with information on the shooting to contact Metro Denver Crime Stoppers. Smith says she grew up in the area and moved back about a year ago. She has been constantly worried about crime. Danielle Smith was struck by a stray bullet while in her home in Aurora. CBS "People yelling about who stole whose drugs and who stole whose girlfriend, and it's a nightmare," she said. "The neighborhood is so far gone that if even the police don't want to come out here anymore to help, there's nothing that can be done." She says police have told her in the past they don't want to come to her street. Aurora police did not return a call late Thursday to inquire about her claim. Smith worries not just about herself, but her 16-year-old daughter who is holding down a job. "She works all day. So when she comes home on the bus at night, it's not a safe place for her to walk at all," she said. Other neighbors we talked with echoed concerns, although one parent said she was not concerned for her children. At the Lopez-Gomez home in an apartment on the street, father Wilson Lopez expressed concern for his young children. "The area is quite dangerous," he said in his native Spanish. "You hear a lot of shooting, a lot of police also at night… the area has always been, as we say, 'hot,'" he explained. In the aftermath of the shooting, Smith is hurting both physically and mentally. And planning to move when her lease is up. The duplex where the bullet struck a woman inside. CBS "I blame the city. Because it's not the first time, and it's definitely not going to be the last. I just think the last of police presence in this neighborhood is diabolical. It is scarce," she said. Officers said they didn't find any shell casings in the area around her home.

Blue city mayor nearly kidnapped after claiming city is getting safer: police

Just one day after Mayor Paul Young of Memphis touted declining crime in the city, a man was arrested for allegedly stalking and attempting to kidnap him. Trenton Abston, 25, was arrested Wednesday and charged with attempted kidnapping, stalking and aggravated criminal trespass against Young, according to the Memphis Police Department (MPD). Police said in an announcement on Facebook that public and private security camera footage showed Abston scaling the wall to the mayor's neighborhood and walking to Young's home. He was arrested with a TASER, gloves, rope and duct tape in his vehicle. Thanks to a rapid response by MPD officers, as well as security camera footage, Abston was quickly apprehended, the department said. "We understand the concerns raised by this incident and want to reassure the public that the Memphis Police Department remains fully committed to the safety of all residents, including our city's elected officials," the police department said. "We take any potential threat seriously and will continue to act swiftly and thoroughly." According to Shelby County, Tennessee jail records, Abston remains behind bars as of Friday, and his bond has not yet been assessed. It is unclear whether he has an attorney, and the Shelby County public defender's office could not be reached for comment. The suspect was arrested just one day after Young took to X to defend the city after comments made by sports analyst Stephen A. Smith, who said NBA players don't want to play in Memphis due to safety concerns. "The people in Memphis, it's a great sports town — great fans, great people — but there's an element there where cats like Jimmy Butler and others don't feel like it's the safest environment," Smith said on Tuesday's edition of "First Take" on ESPN. "I'm talking to the local authorities in Memphis. You've got to clean some of that stuff up because it's dissuasive to NBA players. They have talked about it. I know. They've told me. Highland Park police shoot, kill man armed with knife during well-being check

Police in Highland Park, Illinois, shot and killed a man they said was armed with a knife during a well-being check early Friday morning. According to Highland Park officials, officers conducted a well-being check of a man in the roadway in the 900 block of Half Day Road just before 5 a.m. Police said the man "quickly charged at officers with a knife," prompting officers to fire shots. The Highland Park Fire Department arrived minutes later and tried to help stabilize the man. Officials said life-saving measures were not successful, and the man died on the scene. The Lake County Major Crimes Task Force is conducting an independent investigation. The area will remain closed between Western and Compton avenues due to police activity. This is a developing story.
