Box Office: '28 Years Later,' Pixar's 'Elio' to Battle for Second Place as 'How to Train Your Dragon' Looks to Hold at No. 1
The premise of the film igave the creatives a perfect opportunity to pay homage to great sci-fi classics, including 'Alien' and John Carpenter's 'The Thing.' But the one film directors Domee Shi ('Turning Red') and Madeline Sharafian ('Burrow') referenced a lot was 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind.' Shi explains, 'We reference that movie a lot because it's also about a guy who's in love with space.' She adds, 'We loved how that film gave the aliens a big drum roll and with the tone, you didn't quite know were they friendly? What are their intentions? And we liked that aura of mystery for the Communiverse.'
Disney Pixar's 28th feature was also co-written and directed by Adrian Molina ('Coco') with Shi and Sharafian stepping in to take over directing. The two spoke with Variety from Annecy, where the film screened for audiences, about Easter eggs and how its theme of loneliness resonates in today's world.
Madeline Sharafian: What helped us a lot was that, as Adrian was making 'Elio' and his original pass, he screened it many times as we do at Pixar. Over the years, we have watched the story grow, and we were familiar with the characters and with the world, which I think made it a lot easier for us to jump in. We were aligned with his taste. I'd worked with him on 'Coco' and Domee worked with him on 'Turning Red.' Once we had the film in our hands, we were given a lot of freedom, and we were allowed to make big shifts. One of the things we did was we changed Elio's drive. We added the idea that he wants to be abducted by aliens, which was a really fun thing to play with, and that made him this weird, compelling character. Like, why do you want to be abducted?
Domee Shi: We were inspired by our past and our childhoods. Being these lone, nerdy kids in our hometown who like drawing every single day, hoping and praying that we could go to animation school one day and find our people. That was the inspiration for the character of Elio. We always loved Adrian's concept of the world's weirdest kid being mistaken for the leader of Earth and getting abducted. But in giving him this kooky drive at the beginning of the movie, it endeared us to him because we were fellow nerds who eventually found our people, not in space, but at Pixar.
Sharafian: Olga, voiced by Zoe Saldaña, is an amazing character because she is representative of Earth for Elio. She's part of the reason why he's writing Earth off entirely, because he doesn't realize at the beginning of the film that she's just as lonely as he is. She's right there next to him, but we always talked about how he's too busy looking at the stars, and he never looks at her. We told the animators to focus on that and the scenes that they have together. He never directs his attention at her until the end of the film, when he finally returns to Earth. We made that scene where they reunite, all about seeing each other and their similarities.
Shi: It was always the core relationship of the story: Olga and Elio. That was another shift in the story that we brought on when we joined. Writer Julia Cho ('Turning Red') pitched to us the idea of turning Olga from Elio's mom to Elio's aunt. It's a family dynamic that isn't as commonly seen in a lot of movies. But there are all kinds of families in real life, and it clicked for us. It made Elio feel like his life on earth was more unstable. It made Olga feel unprepared, put her under pressure, and more prone to making mistakes. It gave them more conflict. Also, it was another way that we were able to relate personally to the character of Olga, too, of this career woman overwhelmed with a sudden and unexpected present that lands on their lap.
Shi: We talked to a lot of child psychologists for this film. We even consulted with the U.S Surgeon General at the time, Dr. Vivek Murthy, who talked about the epidemic of loneliness in our current day society, and how a lot of people are finding it harder to connect with others and to make friends. One of the things we discovered with the experts this idea that one of the steps to curing loneliness is to admit that you are lonely and that you need help. But a lot of people don't do that, because it's also a feeling that brings about a lot of guilt and shame. The first thing that Elio does, when he really does cement his bond with Glordon in the movie, is that he lets his walls down and reveals that deep, vulnerable part of himself that he's been burying inside. When he admits to Glordon, 'I'm afraid that there's something wrong with me, that it's not earth.' That's a really big step for him. He's never admitted that to anybody.
Shi: Both of us are huge fans of horror, and it was fun to pitch ways that we could include it in the movie.
Sharafian: The musicality and the way the Communiverse first contacts Elio is totally an homage to 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind.' We reference that movie a lot because it's also about a guy who's in love with space. But we loved how that film gave the aliens a big drum roll, and with the tone. You didn't quite know, are they friendly? What are their intentions? And we liked that aura of mystery for the Communiverse before we reveal it.
Shi: John Carpenter's 'The Thing' with the clone. And definitely 'Alien' (in an exchange between Elio and Glordon).
Sharafian: We were inspired by 'Contact' as a movie that uses space as healing for the main character.
Shi: All the classic Pixar Easter eggs are in there, too. We got the Pizza Planet Truck, the Luxo Ball. We even have an Easter egg that hints at our next movie, 'Hopper.' It's hidden in plain sight, and there's an Easter egg for Maddie's short film 'Burrow' (on the sunscreen bottle).
Shi: In our post-COVID, current world of craziness, I feel like a lot of people are probably feeling how Elio is feeling. They're struggling with a lot of their issues, silently. But when they watch 'Elio,' our hope is that they feel inspired to share their struggle and make a connection with someone.

This Viral Air Fryer S'Mores Dip Is Still the Perfect Comfort Snack
After a TikTok of air fryer s'mores dip popped up on my For You page, I had to try it. Now, a year later, this snack is just as tasty as ever. TikTok users were shocked that they hadn't thought of making this snack before, and so was I. However, I was happily surprised by how easy it looked to whip up. TikTok user Cecilie Bak Klemens shared the video of her making the mouthwatering dip in her air fryer, and that post has since garnered more than 75 million views and a host of hilariously relatable comments, including some from well-known brands. "All of a sudden we know what we're making for breakfast, lunch, and dinner tomorrow," Pinterest commented on the now-viral video. I knew I had to try this snack, and I'm happy to report that it was as simple as the 12-second TikTok made it seem. Here's how you can make this s'mores dip whenever you're craving it -- no fire pit needed. Read more: Best Air Fryers of 2025 How to make air fryer s'mores dip Step 1: Line your airfryer with parchment paper that's trimmed to the size of your basket, or use a removable air fryer basket that can be cleaned separately. (This step is optional but will cut down on cleaning time.) Step 2: Place marshmallows inside the air fryer, along with chunks of the chocolate of your choice. (We used classic Hershey's chocolate.) You can use as many, or as few, marshmallows as you like, then add an equal amount of chocolate pieces. Corin Cesaric/CNET Step 3: Cook at 375 degrees for 10 minutes or until the marshmallows are golden brown. Step 4: Let the dip cool slightly, then enjoy it with graham crackers. The outside of your s'mores dip will be slightly crunchy and golden brown, and the inside will be perfectly gooey. Corin Cesaric/CNET If the dip hardens while you're eating it, you can pop it back in the air fryer for a few minutes until you get the desired consistency again. Read more: Everything You've Always Wanted to Know About Air Fryers (but Were Afraid to Ask) How to clean your air fryer Although this recipe seems like it would create quite the mess, using a separate removable baking pan or parchment paper makes the clean up is a breeze. However, if you have some overflow or your air fryer is simply due for its cleaning, follow these three simple steps. Air fryer s'mores dip FAQ Can you make traditional s'mores using an air fryer? Yes! If you want to skip the dip and make your s'mores whole, you can place the bottom graham cracker, chocolate and marshmallow in the air fryer (don't forget the parchment paper!) and toast it for a few minutes. When it's done, use another graham cracker to squish your creation together. Is there anything you can't cook in the air fryer? While the air fryer perfectly cooks a lot of things, some are just better when made with different appliances, such as leafy greens and large cuts of meat. Here are six more foods that shouldn't be cooked in your air fryer. More air fryer recipes to try

Hollywood loves a comeback story: What the 2025 box-office rebound means for summer blockbusters
The movie industry hasn't caught many breaks in recent years, even after rebounding from the Covid-19 pandemic. Studios were faced with a writers' strike, blockbusters that fell well below expectations and dilemmas over when to release movies into theaters before having them stream online. The domestic box office continued a trend of getting the year off to a slow start, as January lacked a strong carryover movie from the holiday season or a surprise audience pleaser, renewing fears the industry faces long-term financial woes. The box office for January 1 to April 3 was down 13% compared to the same time last year, which in turn was down 7.6% compared with 2023. 'It's not like a hard-and-fast rule that the first three months are typically slow. Sometimes they can be huge if you have a big holdover movie and a couple of breakout hits,' said Paul Dergarabedian, senior analyst at Comscore. The first major release of 2025 was Marvel's 'Captain America: Brave New World,' which opened in February to more than $100 million over the four-day Presidents Day holiday weekend, only to see its earnings plunge 68% in the second week. Things didn't improve much from there. In March, the box office was down nearly 50% compared with the same month last year, according to Comscore data. Ticket sales certainly weren't buoyed by Disney's 'Snow White,' which opened to a meager $43 million amid polarizing reactions about casting and politics. But then came the turnaround. April brought a wide variety of movies that drew in nostalgic audiences and moviegoers following positive buzz. Carrying much of the load for the month was Warner Bros. Pictures. The studio's 'A Minecraft Movie' debuted to nearly $163 million, while Ryan Coogler's highly acclaimed 'Sinners' has exceeded expectations with over $275 million in domestic sales. Warner Bros. Discovery is the parent company of CNN. Following the strong performance from 'Minecraft,' the industry had a record Memorial Day weekend that saw the box office up 22% compared with 2024. It was led by Disney's live-action 'Lilo & Stitch' remake opening to a record $183 million. 'Lilo & Stitch' has so far grossed over $380 million domestically and may soon overtake 'Minecraft' ($423.9 million) as this year's biggest earner. Other May winners include the big-budget Disney/Marvel movie 'Thunderbolts' ($189 million), Paramount's 'Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning,' ($173 million) and Warner Bros.' 'Final Destination: Bloodlines' ($133 million). The momentum has carried over into June with 'How to Train Your Dragon.' Universal's live-action remake has already grossed nearly $135 million since opening last weekend. The overall box office is closing in on $4 billion for all of 2025 — an 18% gain compared to this time last year, according to Comscore data. 2023 marked the first post-pandemic year to earn more than $4 billion between the first Friday of May and Labor Day, according to Comscore. Greg Durkin, founder of entertainment research firm Enact Insights, attributes the industry's comeback to a rise in quality films. And high-potential movies are about to be released. Warner Bros. Pictures' 'F1' and Universal Pictures' 'M3GAN 2.0' are set to open Friday. July will include Universal Pictures' 'Jurassic World Rebirth,' and Warner Bros.' 'Superman,' which Durkin said will be 'tremendous' hits at the box office. He added that Disney's July release of 'The Fantastic Four: First Steps' will also do well. ''Superman' and 'Fantastic Four' and maybe to a degree 'Jurassic World,' will be big players' to nearly reach $4 billion this summer, said Shawn Robbins, director of analytics at Fandango and founder and owner of Box Office Theory. 'We're not selling Frosted Flakes or Coca-Cola … This is a product that reinvents itself every week,' said Daniel Loria, editorial director at Boxoffice Pro. Movies have 'fortunately' connected better with audiences, but it's still a 'risky business,' Loria added. Having a diverse movie slate can be helpful. Since April, moviegoers have had the choice of children and family movies ('How to Train Your Dragon' and 'Lilo & Stitch'), action flicks ('Mission Impossible — The Final Reckoning'), horror ('Sinners') and romantic comedies ('Materialists'). 'The lineup goes on hot and cold streaks. Something can look good on paper but not work in release, and vice versa,' said box office analyst David A. Gross, who publishes FranchiseRe. Gross noted that even superhero movies, such as 'Captain America' and 'Thunderbolts,' haven't consistently performed well compared to pre-pandemic years. And while April and May helped this year's box office bounce back from a slow start, June will be down about 6.5% compared to last year and down almost 26% compared with the pre-pandemic average, according to estimates from Gross. 'The 'recovery' compared with last year is slipping, so it's not time to pop the champagne just yet,' Gross said. In times of broader political and economic uncertainty, Americans have shown they will pull away from expensive commitments and seek smaller pleasures. For some, that means trading in vacations and indulging in less expensive purchases. 'It's pretty cheap to go to a movie, relative to going to rent a house and get on a flight, or rent a car,' said Durkin. 'You still need that escapism.' The movie theater is a social experience, Durkin said, which makes it fulfilling and worthwhile. In Clarksdale, Mississippi — the town which inspired the setting of 'Sinners' — a special screening was hosted to allow locals in the theater-less town to watch the film together. Moviegoers are still 'price sensitive,' Loria said. Although premium offerings can price a single ticket as high as $25 in cities like New York and Los Angeles, theater chains such as AMC offer discount screenings on Tuesdays. On July 9, AMC will start offering 50% discounts on Wednesdays. 'It's a relatively inexpensive way to escape the outside world for a couple of hours,' said Dergarabedian, adding that PG-rated films have been 'booming' as families head to theaters. 'Looking at 2025 in a vacuum — what a great recovery,' he said. 'It's all product-based. It's the movies that determine the box office, not the month.'
