Trespassers intercepted in Kruger National Park: one killed, one arrested

A man believed to be from Mozambique has been killed and another arrested after being caught trespassing in the Satara area of the Kruger National Park (KNP) in the early hours of Saturday, 14 June.
According to Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, three men were intercepted by rangers around 00:45.
The men allegedly opened fire when instructed to stop, prompting the rangers to return fire.'Two of the suspects were seriously injured during the shootout. One died at the scene, while the other was rushed to a nearby hospital where he remains under police guard,' said Ndubane.
The third suspect managed to flee and is still on the run. The rangers acted quickly to secure the area, and police have since opened a case of trespassing, possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, and attempted murder.
Ndubane confirmed that when the men were searched, the following items were found in their backpacks:
* A hunting rifle
* Five live rounds of ammunition
* An axe*
A knife
* Two cellphones
Although the suspects' intentions have not yet been confirmed, the presence of weapons and hunting tools raises suspicions of possible poaching.
The Kruger National Park, which stretches across parts of Limpopo and Mpumalanga, is known for its intense anti-poaching operations aimed at protecting endangered wildlife, especially rhinos and elephants.
The arrested suspect, who has not been named, is expected to appear in court once he has recovered from his injuries and is discharged from the hospital. Police have also indicated that additional charges may be added as investigations continue.
Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies and SANParks rangers are working together to track down the third suspect who fled the scene. His identity is also believed to be Mozambican, but this has not yet been officially confirmed.
This incident highlights the continued challenges faced by anti-poaching units operating in one of South Africa's most important conservation areas. Despite tight security, cross-border criminal activity – particularly from neighbouring Mozambique – remains a concern for park authorities.
Rangers working in the park face constant danger in their efforts to protect wildlife and stop illegal activities. Over the years, the fight against poaching has become increasingly violent, with criminal syndicates arming themselves with high-powered weapons.
Environmental activists and park authorities have repeatedly called for better border control, more community engagement, and stronger cross-border cooperation to reduce illegal incursions into South Africa's protected areas.
While South Africa's conservation laws are among the most advanced in the world, enforcement remains difficult in remote areas like Satara, where dense bush and poor visibility make patrols risky and unpredictable.

Standerton Regional Court sentences convicted serial rapist to another 25 years in jail. A convicted serial rapist serving more than three life sentences and over 100 years has been sentenced to an additional 25 years in jail. The Standerton Regional Court sentenced Zakhele Isaac Mahlangu (44) for raping a 21-year-old woman on May 7, 2016. The victim was on her way to a hiking spot along the Secunda road (R546) near Charl Cilliers when Mahlangu offered her a lift in a white vehicle at about 14:00. 'The suspect claimed he was heading in the same direction,' said Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane. Along the way Mahlangu diverted onto a gravel road, claiming that he was going to pick up other people on a nearby farm. 'The rapist then tied her up using a seatbelt, forcibly removed her clothing and raped her multiple times without protection, despite her resistance and cries for help,' explained Ndubane. Mahlangu then removed the vehicle's number plates, threw the victim's belongings out of the car and abandoned her in an isolated area. The victim got another lift to Charl Cilliers where she reported the incident and was referred to the Standerton Police Station for further investigation. The police took her to hospital for medical examination. In a dramatic twist of events, the victim later saw the suspect, who was already in jail, being escorted by prison wardens at a hospital,' said Ndubane. 'She immediately alerted the police who acted swiftly to investigate,' added Ndubane. The court ordered that the sentence run concurrently with the other sentences that Mahlangu is already serving. He was declared unfit to possess a firearm. Mahlangu's trail of criminal records was laid bare before the court. He was sentenced to 60 days with an option of R600 fine for burglary in September 1998. Mahlangu was also sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment for a rape in October 2002. After being released from jail, Mahlangu was again sentenced to three months' imprisonment and given a R1 500 fine for assault in April 2013. In August 2021 the Secunda Sexual Offences Court found Mahlangu guilty of raping several women and stealing their belongings. His reign of terror included kidnapping which dated back to 2014. The modus operandi that Mahlangu used over the years was to offer lifts to women. He then raped them and stole from them. He has faced 14 counts that included kidnapping, rape and theft. The court imposed three life sentences and 108 years on Mahlangu at the time. The latest sentence coincides with the latest Mpumalanga crime statistics which placed GBVF as the most-prevalant crime in the province. Man shot dead after being robbed of backpack in Inanda, KZN
A man was shot dead in Inanda, KZN, on Saturday, 21 June 2025, after being robbed of his backpack. According to Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA), a motorist reported to the security company after witnessing two men attacking the victim with pipes. The motorist recalled that the suspects quickly fled the scene with the victim's backpack upon noticing him stop. The motorist said that he was unaware that the victim had been shot. Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were summoned to the scene and found the man unresponsive. Paramedics declared him dead after he sustained a gunshot wound to his back that went through his chest. The suspects have not been apprehended yet. Two-night shift employees at a used spare business in Hazelmere, KZN, were attacked by six armed robbers and tied up for 11 hours on Friday, 20 June 2025. The suspects covered the victims' faces and tied them up at gunpoint. RUSA explained, 'Their hands & feet were bound with belts & shoelaces. Used vehicle bumpers & body parts were then stacked on top of the victims & they were found by dayshift staff eleven (11) hours later in the same position.' The suspects stole mag rims, power tools, car body parts and other items worth thousands of rands throughout the night. According to reports, it is alleged that the leader of the gang was a Mozambican National who was an employee at the same company. The foreign national had his face covered up when the robbery was in progress. He was found in possession of the items taken during the robbery and was arrested. Additional items were discovered in various locations at a home near the Hazelmere Dam. The suspect told RUSA that his accomplices had fled the scene and were on the run. Investigations are taking place.
