Dibrugarh: A total of 11 business establishments were reduced to ashes in a fire that broke at Jorhat's Mariani town early on Tuesday.
The blaze, which started around 4.30 am inside a shop, quickly spread to adjacent buildings, including a lodge, before being brought under control nearly five hours later.

According to witnesses, thick smoke was seen billowing from a shop, prompting locals to alert the fire services. However, response was hampered as only one fire tender was available at the Mariani Fire Station at the time. The other tender had been deployed as a safety measure at a Municipal Election strong room in the district.
"The lone fire tender arrived quickly, but it ran out of water and had to leave for a refill.
By the time it returned, the fire had already spread. Without locals' assistance in removing valuable goods and helping manage the scene, the losses would have been significantly greater," said Ramesh Das, a shop owner.
Additional fire tenders, including ones from ONGC, arrived later and joined the efforts to douse the flames. After a grueling five-hour battle, the fire was finally extinguished. While no injuries were reported, the damage was extensive, with several shops and a lodge completely gutted.
All occupants of the lodge managed to evacuate before the fire reached the building. Before the fire tenders arrived, the locals stepped in, forming human chains to salvage goods from nearby shops before the flames could consume them.
While the exact cause of the fire remains under investigation, preliminary assessments point to an electrical short circuit, possibly resulting from faulty wiring or damaged electrical connections.

US Experts Join ONGC Team To Contain Assam Gas Blowout

A three-member team of well control specialists from Cudd Well Control in the USA have begun intensive site preparations to bring under control the situation at the site of a gas blowout at a well in the Rudrasagar oil field of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) in Assam's Sivasagar. The well has been spewing gas for nine days. The blowout took place on June 12. A private firm, SK Petro Services, was operating the well on behalf of the company. The arrival of the American experts marks a critical escalation in efforts to contain the emergency, which has forced the evacuation of nearly 350 families who remain displaced in relief camps while authorities battle to bring the situation under control. The blowout has proven resistant to multiple interventions by ONGC's crisis management team, with various containment techniques, including multiple "Junk Shot" operations, failing to plug the dangerous gas leakage. The specialised US team, renowned for their expertise in blowouts, well control, and firefighting operations, immediately began assessment. "The international expert team was briefed comprehensively about all developments and containment efforts attempted so far. They have now conducted a firsthand assessment of the blowout site and will commence their specialised intervention operations from Saturday morning," a senior ONGC official said. The Cudd Well Control team brings decades of experience in handling some of the world's most challenging well control emergencies. Their involvement signals the complexity and severity of the Rudrasagar incident, which has become one of the most significant industrial emergencies in Assam this year. Following their arrival, the American specialists held extensive consultations with top ONGC officials before proceeding directly to the blowout site for a detailed situational analysis. The team's assessment will determine the specific advanced techniques required to successfully cap the well and terminate the gas discharge. ONGC has been maintaining rigorous safety protocols throughout the crisis, implementing continuous water blanketing operations around the site to prevent potential fire hazards. The company has also established round-the-clock air quality monitoring systems to track gas concentrations and particulate matter levels in the surrounding areas. "Our monitoring systems confirm that particulate matter levels and gas concentrations in the vicinity remain within acceptable safety parameters. Air quality around the well site is being monitored continuously and is found to be within safe limits at 50-100 metres distance from the well mouth. The gas pressure has also fallen from 2600 psi to 500 psi," the ONGC official added. The corporation has been preparing for advanced well-killing techniques while systematically removing non-essential equipment from the vicinity to minimise operational risks. Engineers have also developed an alternate access route to ensure safer movement of personnel and equipment around the volatile site. The prolonged nature of the blowout has raised concerns about environmental impact and the welfare of displaced families. The Sivasagar district administration has been coordinating with ONGC to ensure adequate facilities and support for the 350 families currently housed in relief camps. "We are providing all necessary assistance to the affected families and maintaining close coordination with ONGC's emergency response team. The priority remains ensuring public safety while supporting the well control operations," Sivasagar Deputy Commissioner Ayush Garg said on Friday. The Rudrasagar oil field has been a significant production asset for ONGC in Assam, contributing to the region's oil and gas output. However, the current emergency has temporarily halted operations across the facility while containment efforts continue.

Assam gas leak; US experts have arrived, capping of well will start on Saturday June 21: Assam CM

Sivasagar (Assam) [India], June 20 (ANI): An expert team of USA has reached India and the process of capping of ONGC Rudrasagar Field which is struggling to check the gas leak and fire for last few days, will start from Saturday, June 21, said Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma in a press conference. According to ONGC, a new, safer, and more practical plan is now in motion to control the leak. A team of expert engineers from the United States have arrived at the site to assist in the operation. Full-scale work under the new strategy of capping the field is set to begin tomorrow. Earlier in the day, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also shared an update regarding the fire of ONGC Rudrasagar Field on his X handle, stating that nearly 50 per cent of the groundwork, including site preparation and equipment setup, has been completed and a team of experts from the US is about to reach the site to provide support. He posted, 'We've received an update from @ONGC on the ongoing operation at the RDS 147A well site in Sivasagar. After exploring multiple approaches with great effort and precision, ONGC is now advancing with a more practical and safer strategy to cap the leak. Close to 50% of the groundwork--such as site preparation and equipment mobilisation--has already been completed.' He added, 'A team of experts from the United States is reaching the site this evening to provide additional insights and support. Full-scale operations under the new plan are set to begin tomorrow. The Government of India and Government of Assam are monitoring the situation 24x7 and are fully committed to ensuring safety, restoring normalcy, and resolving the issue at the earliest.' So far, ONGC has tried several 'junk shot' methods using different materials and pressure techniques to stop the gas discharge. As the situation continues, an alternate route is being developed to allow safer movement to and from the well site. For safety, bunk houses and non-essential equipment are being removed from the area. Water blanketing--a method used to reduce fire risk--is ongoing around the clock. Air quality is being checked continuously, and all levels, including gas and dust particles, are reported to be within safe limits. ONGC, along with district officials, is also helping the families affected by the incident. The company has said it remains fully committed to protecting the safety of the local community and the environment. The Government of India and the Government of Assam are monitoring the situation closely and are working together to resolve the issue as quickly and safely as possible. (ANI)
