Assam gas leak; US experts have arrived, capping of well will start on Saturday June 21: Assam CM

Sivasagar (Assam) [India], June 20 (ANI): An expert team of USA has reached India and the process of capping of ONGC Rudrasagar Field which is struggling to check the gas leak and fire for last few days, will start from Saturday, June 21, said Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma in a press conference.
According to ONGC, a new, safer, and more practical plan is now in motion to control the leak. A team of expert engineers from the United States have arrived at the site to assist in the operation. Full-scale work under the new strategy of capping the field is set to begin tomorrow.
Earlier in the day, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma also shared an update regarding the fire of ONGC Rudrasagar Field on his X handle, stating that nearly 50 per cent of the groundwork, including site preparation and equipment setup, has been completed and a team of experts from the US is about to reach the site to provide support.
He posted, 'We've received an update from @ONGC on the ongoing operation at the RDS 147A well site in Sivasagar. After exploring multiple approaches with great effort and precision, ONGC is now advancing with a more practical and safer strategy to cap the leak. Close to 50% of the groundwork--such as site preparation and equipment mobilisation--has already been completed.'
He added, 'A team of experts from the United States is reaching the site this evening to provide additional insights and support. Full-scale operations under the new plan are set to begin tomorrow. The Government of India and Government of Assam are monitoring the situation 24x7 and are fully committed to ensuring safety, restoring normalcy, and resolving the issue at the earliest.'

So far, ONGC has tried several 'junk shot' methods using different materials and pressure techniques to stop the gas discharge. As the situation continues, an alternate route is being developed to allow safer movement to and from the well site.
For safety, bunk houses and non-essential equipment are being removed from the area. Water blanketing--a method used to reduce fire risk--is ongoing around the clock. Air quality is being checked continuously, and all levels, including gas and dust particles, are reported to be within safe limits.
ONGC, along with district officials, is also helping the families affected by the incident. The company has said it remains fully committed to protecting the safety of the local community and the environment.
The Government of India and the Government of Assam are monitoring the situation closely and are working together to resolve the issue as quickly and safely as possible. (ANI)

A woman does not need her husband's consent and signature to apply for a passport and insisting on the same is an instance of 'male supremacism', the Madras high court has said disposing of a petition filed by a woman who sought directions to authorities to issue her a fresh passport. The woman, Revathy, moved the court saying that she applied for a passport in April, but her application was not processed and the petitioner was informed that she must obtain the signature of her husband in Form-J and only thereafter, the application will be processed by the Chennai RPO. The petitioner got married in 2023 and there was a matrimonial dispute between the parties which resulted in her husband filing a petition before a local court, seeking for the dissolution of the marriage. This petition was pending. The RPO also took the pending dispute into consideration, following which she filed the present petition. In his order, the judge said that in the considered view of this court, the application submitted by the petitioner seeking a passport has to be processed independently. 'It is not necessary for a wife to get the permission of her husband and take his signature before applying for a passport before the authority,' the judge said in the June 18 order. 'This insistence made by the 2nd respondent (the RPO) shows the mindset of the society in treating woman who are married as if they are chattel belonging to the husband. It is quite shocking that the passport office is insisting for the permission of the husband and his signature in a particular form in order to process the application submitted by the petitioner for passport,' the court said. The judge said the petitioner after marriage does not lose her individuality and a wife can always apply for a passport without the permission or signature of the husband in any form. It noted that it was not possible for the petitioner woman to obtain her husband's signature on the application in view of the strained relationship between them, the judge said, the RPO was insisting the woman 'fulfill an impossibility'. 'The practice of insisting for permission from the husband to apply for passport, does not augur well for a society which is moving towards emancipation. This practice is nothing short of male supremacism,' the court said. The judge directed the RPO to process the application submitted by the petitioner and issue a passport in her name on her satisfying the other requirements. This process shall be completed within four weeks, the judge added.

Forest dept begins re-survey to relocate villages from Sariska

Jaipur: The forest administration has launched a re-survey process to relocate six villages located in the core area of Sariska Tiger Reserve. The move aims to address long-pending demands of villagers, particularly those who were minors during the earlier survey (2008–2011) but have since formed separate households. An official said, "The re-survey will update data from the original survey, addressing gaps and including families previously excluded. Focus will be on those who were underage at the time but are now eligible." Of the 29 villages originally within the Core Tiger Habitat (CTH) of Sariska, 11 were initially surveyed for displacement, and five—Rotlaya, Bhavanwada, Kamri, Paniwala, and Dabli—were fully relocated. The remaining six—Kankawadi, Sukola, Dabli, Haripura, Fatka, and Devri—are now being re-evaluated for relocation. In the first phase of the new survey, residents of Sukola and Haripura were shown resettlement sites. "After the survey, eligible families will be allotted land. Residents of Sukola have already consented to relocate," the official added. The relocation of these six villages is expected to free up approximately 400 sq km of core forest land, enhancing wildlife conservation efforts. Rehabilitation will follow the Government of India's 2008 guidelines and Rajasthan's 2002 displacement policy. Eligible families will receive compensation packages like those provided earlier. Those opting for cash will receive Rs15 lakh. Families with up to 2 bighas of land will be allotted 6 bighas, a 60x90 ft residential plot, and Rs 3.75 lakh. Those with more than 2 bighas will be compensated based on the prevailing Basic Land Cost (BLC). A one-year extension has been granted for this relocation. Any family member turning 21 by May 27, 2026, will now be considered an independent unit eligible for benefits under the scheme.

According to Richard Stunning, official adjudicator at Guinness World Records, a record with a title for the most people performing the cobra pose in yoga began on Saturday. The minimum number of participants for the record was 250; they had to hold the Yoga Cobra pose for at least a minute. A total of 2,184 participants breached the one-minute timeline; they ended up holding the cobra pose for two minutes and nine seconds. The Guinness World Records discounted 64 participants, after which 2,121 participants held the cobra pose for two minutes and nine seconds to clinch the Guinness World Record. 'The Guinness World Records title that starts today is the most people performing the cobra pose in yoga, simultaneously. We set a guideline that everyone had to do it for at least a minute each, and we set a minimum target of 250 participants. Today, they did it for more than a minute, they did it for two minutes and nine seconds, and the total was 2185. We had to discount 64 participants. So the confirmed title is 2,121 participants.
