Beyond resumes: How Gen AI is redefining recruitment

Hans India31-05-2025

Recruitment is undergoing a tech revolution, with HR leaders embracing generative AI at every stage of hiring. From context-driven resume screening to AI-enabled interviews and adaptive assessments, the technology is boosting efficiency, accuracy, and candidate experience. As tools like Eightfold.ai and HireVue take the lead, recruiters are finding more time to focus on what matters most: understanding people beyond the paper
HR professionals are proving to be some of the keenest adopters of generative AI technology. According to recent research by Gartner, 38% of HR leaders are already piloting, planning, or implementing Gen AI initiatives. With use cases spanning resume screening, candidate engagement, assessments, and internal operations, generative AI is quickly becoming a valuable partner in the recruitment process. As organizations explore its growing capabilities, AI is set to reshape how talent is sourced, evaluated, and managed—enhancing efficiency while keeping human judgment at the core.
Impact of Gen AI on recruitment
Recruitment is seeing a change with AI-driven tools optimizing various aspects, from application tracking to candidate engagement.
Traditional applicant tracking systems (ATS) have long relied on keyword matching and fixed filters to screen resumes. While they are efficient at handling large volumes, they often miss qualified candidates who do not use the exact terms expected. Generative AI is shifting this approach by focusing on context and intent rather than just word matches. For instance, LinkedIn Recruiter's AI assistant can identify candidates with transferable skills and relevant career progressions—even if their job titles don't directly match the role. A data analyst might still be a strong fit for a business intelligence position based on their tools and outcomes.
Platforms like Eightfold.ai take it further by reading between the lines. If a candidate led a CRM migration, the system can infer related skills such as data integration, change management, and customer lifecycle strategy—even if these are not explicitly mentioned. Some tools also generate plain-language summaries of candidate profiles, giving recruiters a quick, clear snapshot of strengths without needing to decode jargon. Others, like HireVue, enhance the process with AI-integrated video interviews to assess communication skills and simulate real-world scenarios.
Gen AI based automated proctored assessments
Once candidates are shortlisted, they undergo written tests to evaluate aptitude, technical knowledge, and behavioral traits. These tests go beyond technical proficiency—they also assess cultural fit, adaptability, and problem-solving ability. For instance, Capgemini uses AI-powered assessments to evaluate domain expertise and cognitive skills, resulting in a 40% improvement in hiring efficiency.
However, Gen AI-based assessments bring a deeper layer of intelligence and adaptability to the process. Unlike traditional AI, Gen AI systems are capable of learning continuously, recognizing patterns, making contextual decisions, and evolving over time—similar to human cognition.
This means Gen AI can detect subtle anomalies, adapt to new test-taking behaviors, and refine its proctoring mechanisms with each session. For example, it can use facial recognition to flag impersonation attempts, or analyze eye movement, facial expressions, and typing patterns to detect potential cheating. Over time, these models become smarter, making the evaluation process more secure, unbiased, and scalable.
Gen AI-enabled interviews
AI is reshaping interviews through automated scheduling and AI-led interactions. Platforms like Incruiter use natural language processing (NLP) to assess responses for tone, confidence, and coherence, offering recruiters structured insights. For example, Unilever's AI-driven interviews evaluate facial expressions, speech patterns, and word choice—cutting hiring time by 75%.
Gen AI builds on this by enabling adaptive, dynamic interviews. Instead of asking preset questions, the system can tailor follow-ups based on a candidate's previous answers. It recognizes context, adjusts in real time, and improves with each interaction. For example, HireVue uses Gen AI to simulate real-world scenarios, offering role-specific questions and evaluating not just what candidates say, but how they think and respond under pressure.
Rise of agentic AI in HR
AI is progressing beyond assistance to autonomous execution. Agentic AI independently handles multi-step HR tasks—such as sourcing, screening, and scheduling—minimizing manual input.
HireVue, for example, uses asynchronous AI interviews to evaluate candidates using speech and facial analysis. Goodspace AI monitors employee wellness, predicts engagement drops, and suggests interventions. SourceBae deploys agentic AI to autonomously source and vet tech candidates.
In one case, a mid-sized tech firm seeking React developers used Agentic AI to source 80 candidates, screen 30 via chatbot-led interviews, and schedule 10 for finals—cutting recruiter workload by 60% and time-to-hire by 40%.
These systems also support retention and workforce planning by learning continuously, making them particularly valuable in fast-growing or lean HR environments.
Generative AI is set to permeate the entire recruitment lifecycle—from screening to onboarding—playing a key role in driving both productivity and quality in hiring.
Routine tasks and standard activities will increasingly be handled by AI, allowing HR professionals to focus on high-value areas such as behavioral assessment, cultural fit, and strategic decision-making.

Sun TV Network defends promoter Kalanithi, says all legal obligations met

New Delhi, Jun 20 (PTI) A day after reports emerged of former Union minister Dayanidhi Maran accusing his brother of "fraudulent practices" and "misgovernance", the elder sibling Kalanithi-run Sun TV on Friday said the division between the promoter family done 22 years back was in compliance with all legal obligations. Defending its promoter Kalanithi, Sun TV Network in a regulatory filing said the agreements between the two brothers had been "duly vetted" by "intermediaries" concerned before the company's public issue. According to reports, Dayanidhi has sent a legal notice to his brother and several others, accusing them of "fraudulent practices" and "misgovernance" in taking control of Sun TV after their father Murasoli Maran's death in 2003. Dayanidhi, who is also a Lok Sabha member from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), has sought to restore the company's shareholding structure to its pre-September 2003 status. The board of Sun TV Network is led by Kalanithi as Executive Director and Chairperson. His daughter Kavya Kalanithi Maran is also on the south-based broadcaster board. Kalanithi, as a promoter, owns 75 per cent shareholding in Sun TV Network. On Friday, Sun TV Network, in its regulatory filing said, "The alleged matter dates back to 22 years when the company was a closely held private limited company." Defending the promoter, it further stated, "Statements allegedly made in the articles are incorrect, misleading, speculating, defamatory and not supported by facts or law". "We wish to inform that all acts have been done in accordance with legal obligations and the same had been duly vetted by concerned intermediaries before the public issue of the company," it said. Moreover, Sun TV Network also said the media reports claiming a rift between the promoter Maran brothers "does not have any bearing on the business of the company or its day-to-day functioning". Sun TV Network also clarified that it is a "family matter of the promoter" and is "purely personal in nature". Besides Kalanithi, financial institutions, including mutual funds and insurance companies, own 10.46 per cent of the shareholding of Sun TV and 6.87 per cent by the foreign portfolio investors. Chennai-based Sun TV Network is among India's leading media conglomerates, having 37 television channels in seven languages, with a reach of more than 140 million households in India. Besides, it also owns Sun Direct, a DTH (direct-to-home) platform and operates 69 FM radio stations under the brand names -- Suryan FM, RED FM and Magic FM. It also operates three daily newspapers and six magazines. In addition, Sun TV Network owns the Sunrisers Hyderabad franchise of the Indian Premier League and Sunrisers Eastern Cape of Cricket South Africa's T20 League. For the 2024-25 financial year, the network's total consolidated income was ₹ 4,712.60 crore, down 1.55 per cent. Its profit after tax was down 11.53 per cent to ₹ 1,703.64 crore, against ₹ 1,925.80 crore a year earlier.

Magnets in limbo: No rare earth nod yet from China for Indian auto suppliers

No Indian auto component or vehicle manufacturer has received approval from the Chinese government to procure rare earth magnets so far, Times of India reported citing sources. Despite efforts by Indian officials to intervene, the sources said there is "no clarity as yet" on when a meeting with Chinese representatives might happen. The applications for sourcing magnets were submitted primarily by auto component makers who manufacture complete, high-tech assemblies. These include speedometers, electric motors, e-axles, electric water pumps, automatic transmission kits, speakers, sensors, and ignition coils used in engines. Among the companies that have applied are Uno Minda , Bosch , Mareli, TVS Group, Motherson Sumi , and Sona Comstar. Economic Times reported this week that the number of India-based firms awaiting approval from China's ministry of commerce to import rare earth magnets has nearly doubled—from 11 two weeks ago to 21 now. This list includes Bosch India, Marelli Powertrain India, Mahle Electric Drives India, TVS Motor, and Uno Minda. Sona Comstar, whose earlier application was rejected due to procedural issues, has reapplied and is now among the 21 companies awaiting clearance, a senior industry executive told ET. 'There were no approvals so far, according to the latest assessment we carried through interactions with industry representatives,' one source told TOI. 'The situation is grave, and there is now massive uncertainty regarding manufacturing schedules and factory output.' The request for a meeting with Chinese representatives is being followed up not only by leading industry bodies such as the Auto Component Manufacturers Association (Acma) and Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (Siam), but also by government ministries including heavy industries, external affairs, and commerce. Live Events Senior officials from major automobile companies such as Maruti Suzuki , Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Motors , Bajaj Auto , and TVS are also involved in pursuing the matter with the government and diplomatic channels. Earlier this week, the auto industry held a meeting with top officials at the Ministry of Heavy Industries as the government examined possible solutions to the crisis. 'However, not much headway was made so far,' an official source told the newspaper. Industry executives said that Ernst & Young has been brought on board by the ministry to assist with the issue. During the meeting, officials also reviewed the current preparedness of some Indian companies that are working in the field of magnet production. Automakers urged local magnet producers to provide a firm supply timeline, if at all possible, stating that uninterrupted production lines depend on timely procurement of components. According to the report, both Acma and Siam have drawn up a list of delegates they hope to send to China if the Indian government is able to facilitate such a visit. China's restrictions were formally issued through a notification on April 4 this year. The new rules apply to medium and heavy rare earth metals, their alloys, magnets, and related products under the country's export permit system. To prevent diversion of these materials to defence and weapons production, China now requires exporters to secure a licence. This licence depends on an End User Certificate (EUC), which must be approved first by India's Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) and the Ministry of External Affairs, and then also endorsed by the Chinese Embassy in India. Only after these steps are completed can the EUC be sent to China for the final stages of approval—first by the provincial government where the exporting company is located, and then by China's Ministry of Commerce. Rare earth magnets are critical components used in permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs), which are widely applied in electric vehicles because of their compact size, high torque, and energy efficiency. Hybrid vehicles also rely on these magnets for efficient propulsion systems. While parts manufacturers based in Europe have recently received approval from Chinese authorities to source rare earth magnets, their Indian counterparts—despite being part of the same multinational corporations—are still waiting for the go-ahead from Beijing. According to experts, this delay is worsened by the strained political and commercial relationship between India and China. Indian companies have been attempting to build local capabilities to reduce reliance on imported rare earth materials, but experts say this effort remains extremely challenging and is unlikely to provide immediate relief. Kalpataru IPO to open on Tuesday: 10 key things to know from RHP before you subscribe to ₹1590 crore issue

Kalpataru IPO in focus today: Kalpataru's initial public offering (IPO) is scheduled to kick off for subscription on Tuesday, June 24, and will remain open until Thursday, June 26. The company aims to raise ₹ 1,590 crore through the offering, which is entirely a fresh issue of 3.84 crore shares. The IPO price band is set at ₹ 387 to ₹ 414 per share. Of the total offering, 75% is reserved for Qualified Institutional Buyers (QIBs), 15% for Non-Institutional Investors (NIIs), and 10% for Retail Investors. ICICI Securities Limited, JM Financial Limited, and Nomura Financial Advisory and Securities (India) Pvt. Ltd. are the book-running lead managers of the Kalpataru IPO, while MUFG Intime India Private Limited (Link Intime) is the registrar for the issue. Kalpataru Limited is a Mumbai-based real estate developer with over three decades of presence in the residential and commercial property segments. It has developed numerous projects across Maharashtra, particularly in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and Pune. As of March 31, 2024, the company had 511.62 acres of land in various stages of development, amounting to 49.77 msf of developable area. Its ongoing projects, forthcoming projects, and planned projects amounted to 267.24 acres, 121.32 acres, and 123.06 acres, respectively, with a corresponding developable area of 22.02 msf, 19.93 msf, and 7.81 msf, respectively. The company also intends to complete and sell these projects within their respective timetables in order to monetize these land parcels. As of March 31, 2024, Kalpataru had five land reserves aggregating to 1,886.10 acres. Its land reserves were located in Surat, Gujarat; Pune, Maharashtra; Nagpur, Maharashtra; Udaipur, Rajasthan; and Shirol, Maharashtra. Kalpataru Limited operates in some of India's most competitive real estate markets, particularly the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and Pune, which remain its primary focus areas. According to the Anarock Report, Kalpataru's key competitors in the areas where it currently operates include prominent real estate developers such as Lodha Group, Godrej Properties Limited, Rustomjee Group, Oberoi Realty, Mahindra Lifespace Developers, Prestige Estates, and Sunteck Realty. The company focuses on the development of luxury, premium, and mid-income residential, commercial, and retail projects; integrated townships; lifestyle gated communities; and redevelopments. For its residential developments, it builds and sells a wide range of properties, including villas, duplexes, apartments, and plots of varying sizes, with a primary focus on luxury, premium, and mid-income residential real estate. As of March 31, 2024, 67.71% of the developable area of the residential projects within its development portfolio was located within the MMR, aggregating to 33.69 msf of developable area. One of the key risks highlighted in the RHP is Kalpataru's geographic concentration, especially in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and Pune. Any adverse developments such as regulatory delays, policy changes, or demand slowdowns in these areas could significantly affect the company's performance. Moreover, the real estate sector is highly sensitive to interest rate movements, customer sentiment, and funding availability. In FY24, the company reported revenue of ₹ 1,930 crore and an adjusted EBITDA of ₹ 449 crore but posted a net loss of ₹ 113.8 crore. FY23 revenue was higher at ₹ 3,633 crore due to one-time land sales and subsidiary contributions, though the company still incurred a ₹ 226.7 crore loss. Kalpataru aims to raise ₹ 1,590 crore through a fresh issue of equity shares in its IPO. The proceeds will be used to repay or prepay loans, acquire land and development rights, meet general corporate needs, and support its subsidiaries' growth. Retail investors can apply for a minimum of 36 shares in one lot and can apply for up to 13 lots. At the upper end of the IPO price band ( ₹ 414), retail investors are required to make a minimum investment of ₹ 14,904 per lot. The allotment of shares for the Kalpataru IPO is expected to be finalised on Friday, June 27, 2025. Tentative listing on both the BSE and NSE is scheduled for Tuesday, July 01, 2025.
