Zirakpur's R-5 road freed of encroachments on min order

Time of India06-06-2025

Mohali: Acting on the orders of Punjab local govt minister Ravjot Singh, the Zirakpur municipal council launched a demolition drive to clear encroachments from the R-5 road in the Dhakoli area.
The council deployed bulldozers to restore the road to its designated 20metre width as per the city's master plan.
The illegal encroachments — primarily boundary walls constructed by private builders — had narrowed the vital R-5 road, leading to persistent traffic congestion and drainage problems.
The road, which connects Dhakoli to Peermuchhala, had become a point of concern for both residents and officials due to these violations.
During a recent visit to Zirakpur, minister Ravjot Singh, accompanied by senior administrative officials, instructed the municipal council to strictly implement urban planning norms and ensure that public infrastructure is not obstructed by illegal constructions.
"The R-5 road is part of the approved town planning layout and must be maintained at its full width to facilitate smooth traffic flow and proper drainage," said Jagjit Singh Judge, executive officer of the Zirakpur municipal council.
"We have acted on the minister's directives and removed all encroachments in line with the master plan," he added.
The drive, which saw the removal of multiple illegal boundary walls, was welcomed by local residents who had long complained about traffic jams, waterlogging, and safety risks in the area.
The council has also issued a stern warning to builders and property owners to avoid illegal constructions in the future or face strict legal action.

Indus water pact with Pakistan ‘will never be restored', says Amit Shah

India has made it clear that it will not reinstate the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan, which was suspended following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir. The attack, which killed several civilians, including tourists, was backed by Pakistan-based groups, though Pakistan has denied any involvement. In an interview published Saturday in the Times of India, Union Home Minister Amit Shah ruled out any possibility of resuming the 1960 treaty, terming it unfair to India. 'It will never be restored,' Shah said. 'We will take the water that was flowing to Pakistan to Rajasthan by constructing a canal. Pakistan will be starved of water that it has been getting unjustifiably.' The Indus Waters Treaty, brokered by the World Bank, allocated the three western rivers (Indus, Jhelum and Chenab) to Pakistan and the three eastern rivers (Ravi, Beas and Sutlej) to India. It also provided for cooperative arrangements on hydropower and irrigation between the two neighbours.

‘2029 Elections To Be Held With Women's Reservation': Amit Shah

Last Updated: Amit Shah announced that the 2029 elections will implement the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam Bill, reserving one-third of seats for women. Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the 2029 general elections will be held with a women's reservation, implementing the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam Bill. This bill aims to reserve one-third of seats for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies. In an interview with the Times of India, Shah said, 'The 2029 elections will be held with women's reservation." The Women's Reservation Bill was passed in September 2023 to increase women's representation in lawmaking processes. When asked about the methods to balance southern states' concerns around delimitation with the demand of northern states that their representation in Parliament should be proportionate to their numbers, Shah said they will establish a very good balance, and no one will be dissatisfied. 'No one will have any reason to complain when the exercise is conducted. We will establish a very good balance, and no one will be dissatisfied. DMK is raising the issue only because of the 2026 assembly elections. Delimitation is not going to happen by then, and they know this," he said. 'No, it will never be restored. International treaties can't be annulled unilaterally, but we had the right to put them in abeyance, which we have done. The treaty preamble mentions that it was for the peace and progress of the two countries, but once that has been violated, there is nothing left to protect," he said. 'We will use water that rightfully belongs to India. Paani Rajasthan tak jayega. We will take the water that was flowing to Pakistan to Rajasthan by constructing a canal. Pakistan will be starved of the water that it has been getting unjustifiably," Shah added. The Indus Waters Treaty was suspended with immediate effect after India-Pakistan ties deteriorated sharply following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed 26 lives. India took a series of diplomatic decisions, such as expelling Pakistani nationals. First Published: June 21, 2025, 09:45 IST

'Indus Waters Treaty Will Never Be Restored': Amit Shah Says Pakistan Will Be 'Starved'

Last Updated: Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan will never be restored after the Pahalgam terror attack, saying Islamabad will be "starved". Union Home Minister Amit Shah affirmed that the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan will never be restored as the neighbouring country violated the terms of the agreement and that Islamabad will be starved of water that it had been getting unjustifiably. In an interview with the Times of India, Shah said, 'No, it will never be restored. International treaties can't be annulled unilaterally but we had the right to put it in abeyance, which we have done. The treaty preamble mentions that it was for peace and progress of the two countries but once that has been violated, there is nothing left to protect." 'We will use water that rightfully belongs to India. We will take the water that was flowing to Pakistan to Rajasthan by constructing a canal. Pakistan will be starved of water that it has been getting unjustifiably," Shah further said.
