India's IPO market loses steam on uncertain outlook; Ather stumbles

Zawya06-05-2025

At least two initial public offerings worth $759 million are expected to be delayed, adding to a growing list of Indian companies deciding to postpone plans for initial public listings due to weak investor sentiment, investment bankers say.
Education loan provider Avanse Financial Services and contract drug maker Anthem Biosciences are among companies that will join notable names such as South Korean conglomerate LG Electronics' India unit, to put IPO plans on hold for now, the bankers said.
"There are only select institutional investors coming in at this point given the global uncertainty," Suraj Krishnaswamy, the managing director of investment banking at Axis Capital, said. "And India-Pakistan tensions have not helped."
The trend is an indication that the global trade war and geopolitical tensions have clouded the economic outlook and caused companies to delay their capital raising and investment plans.
The debut of electric scooter maker Ather Energy, seen as a barometer of investor appetite for the primary market, did not alleviate the market's concerns. The stock closed 5.8% lower, reversing gains after listing at a premium of 2% to its issue price of 321 rupees.
The muted listing for a high-profile EV name, which broke a two-month lull in mainboard IPOs, highlights the broader weakness in India's primary market and caution surrounding intense competition in the EV space and elusive profitability, said Vinit Bolinjkar, head of research at Ventura Securities.
As many as 58 companies with Indian regulatory clearance have not launched their IPOs due to global market disruptions caused by U.S. President Donald Trump's tariffs, which have negatively affected business sentiment and fuelled recession fears.
Avanse Financial Services received approval for its $356 million IPO in October 2024, while Anthem Biosciences was cleared to raise $403 million on April 3. Neither company responded to Reuters' requests for comment.
The regulatory clearances of some firms will expire over the next few months, PRIME Database Group MD Pranav Haldea said, forcing them to either restart the entire IPO process or seek an extension from India's market regulator.
India, which was the world's second-largest IPO market last year, has seen a 58% slump in IPOs listed on the main stock exchanges so far this year, according to PRIME Database. The total fundraising on all the listing platforms has seen an 18% drop, LSEG data showed.
"Things are moving slowly, but it is not a complete standstill. In the current scenario, most of the IPOs are in a similar situation," said an investment banker, who requested anonymity as he was not authorised to speak to the media.
Company executives agreed.
"You don't want to file (for IPO) when you do not know how long the volatility will last," online automobile marketplace Droom's CEO Sandeep Aggarwal said, adding that his firm had decided against filing draft IPO papers by June as it had originally planned.
WORRIED INVESTORS
Retail investors, having suffered significant losses due to market volatility, are being more cautious with new investments, resulting in a lukewarm reception for this year's IPOs.
Ather Energy, which decided to proceed with its $352 million IPO despite the uncertainty, had to cut its target valuation by 44% and lower its offer size.
"Ather can be a risky bet given the current geopolitical issues and high valuation," Hem Securities senior research analyst Astha Jain said.
India's Nifty 50 is up 4.8% from April 2, since U.S. President Donald Trump announced "reciprocal" tariffs, but is still down 7% from record highs hit in late-September.
The unpredictable environment is prompting bankers to urge their prospective IPO clients to adjust their strategies.
"If the issue is important, then you may have to reconsider valuations. If valuation is important, then you have to wait for some more time," said Bhavesh Shah, the managing director and head of investment banking at Equirus. ($1 = 84.3430 Indian rupees)

India 'well prepared' to deal with closure of Strait of Hormuz by Iran, says minister

[Editor's Note: Follow our live blog for real-time updates on the latest developments in the Israel-Iran conflict.] Amid Iran's plan to close the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most strategically vital chokepoints in the world connecting the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Sunday asserted that the centre will take "all necessary measures" to ensure affordability and the "stability of fuel supplies". "The Modi government has, over the past several years, not only ensured the stability of supplies, but also affordability. We will take all necessary measures to ensure that," Puri told ANI. The Union Minister said that the consequences of the Strait of Hormuz's closure would be factored in after markets open on Monday. However, he added that there was enough oil available in the global markets. "It's very difficult to speculate on the price factor. The oil price for a long time was between 65 and 70 (USD per barrel). Then it was between 70 and 75. Today is a Sunday. When the markets open tomorrow, the consequences of the closure of the Strait of Hormuz will be factored in. But as I've been saying for a long time, enough oil is available in the global markets," Puri said. "More and more oil is coming on the global markets, particularly from the Western Hemisphere. Even traditional suppliers would be interested in keeping the supplies because they also need revenue. So hopefully the market will factor that in," he added. Puri also posted on X that the centre will take "all necessary steps to ensure stability of fuel supplies" to the citizens. "We have been closely monitoring the evolving geopolitical situation in the Middle East since the past two weeks. Under the leadership of PM Narendr Modi, we have diversified our supplies in the past few years and a large volume of our supplies do not come through the Strait of Hormuz now. Our oil marketing companies have supplies of several weeks and continue to receive energy supplies from several routes. We will take all necessary steps to ensure stability of supplies of fuel to our citizens," Puri said in a post. After US' airstrikes on its nuclear installations, Iran is considering closing the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most strategically vital chokepoints in the world, and any blockade by Tehran would pose serious risks for Europe. Revolutionary Guard commander Sardar Esmail Kowsari told local media in an interview that closing the Strait of Hormuz "is under consideration, and Iran will make the best decision with determination," as per EuroNews. "Our hands are wide open when it comes to punishing the enemy, and the military response was only part of our overall response," added Kowsari, who is a member of the Iranian parliament in addition to his military position. Earlier on Sunday, US President Donald Trump said the "very successful" strikes had hit the Natanz, Fordow and Isfahan underground nuclear sites in Iran.

India's business activity surges in June on strong demand, record export orders, PMI shows

BENGALURU: India's private sector activity accelerated sharply in June as companies ramped up production to meet surging domestic and international demand, according to a survey released on Monday that showed record export growth and robust hiring. The HSBC Flash India Composite Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI), compiled by S&P Global, jumped to a 14-month high of 61.0 this month from 59.3 in May, exceeding a Reuters poll forecast for a modest lift to 59.4. The 50-mark separates growth from contraction and the latest data showed nearly four years of sustained expansion. Services gained momentum with the activity index rising to 60.7 from May's 58.8 - the strongest since August last year - while manufacturing gained pace thanks to robust output. Its PMI climbed to 58.4 in June from 57.6. "New export orders continued to fuel private sector business activity, especially in manufacturing," noted Pranjul Bhandari, chief India economist at HSBC. This expansion was driven by favorable demand as composite new orders grew at the fastest pace in 11 months. Goods producers experienced a more pronounced upturn than services firms. International sales saw a remarkable rise, with overall new export business at the highest since the data started to be collected in September 2014. However, service providers recorded slower growth in export business compared to last month. "The combination of robust global demand and rising backlogs prompted manufacturers to increase hiring," added Bhandari. Manufacturing employment growth reached a peak not seen since the series began over two decades ago. Service providers also continued adding jobs at a solid pace, albeit slower than in May. Meanwhile, overall price pressures eased slightly with input cost inflation softening to a 10-month low, allowing firms to limit price hikes to remain competitive. That resulted in a slower rate of output price rises from May's six-month high. That comes after data showed inflation eased to an over 6-year low in May, allowing the Reserve Bank of India to focus on supporting economic growth and cutting interest rates amid rising uncertainty from U.S. trade tariffs. Despite positive private sector performance, business confidence dipped to its lowest in just over two years. Manufacturers expressed slightly improved optimism while service providers tempered their expectations for the coming year.

Retail cools on Saudi hospital IPO

The retail tranche of the SR1.88bn (US$501m) IPO of Saudi Arabia's Specialized Medical Company was only 1.45 times subscribed despite demand in the institutional tranche reaching US$32.4bn. The retail tranche represents 20% of the IPO with 15m shares on offer at SR25 each. That is larger than the 10% often earmarked for retail investors but SR542.2m of orders is well short of demand seen on other Saudi IPOs in which retail demand is typically enough to cover the entire deal and regularly tops SR1bn. In March, the 10% retail tranche of the SR450m IPO of poultry producer Arabian Company for Agricultural and Industrial Investment, known as Entaj, was more than 30 times covered with demand of SR1.4bn. The same month, Umm Al Qura for Development and Construction had orders reaching SR3.93bn for the 10% retail tranche of its SR1.96bn float, more than twice the entire deal. More recent deals have increased the retail allocation though demand seems to have cooled. The 20% retail tranche on United Carton Industries' SR600m IPO in May was 8.9 times covered with demand of just over SR1bn, while institutional demand exceeded SR75bn. Earlier this month, low-cost carrier Flynas said it was 3.5 times covered on the 20% retail tranche of its SR4.1bn IPO, representing demand of SR2.87bn and the first in which retail wasn't enough to cover the whole deal. Institutions put in orders for 100 times the whole deal. Cooling demand from retail is only rational given only Umm Al Qura has delivered positive returns, closing on Thursday at SR22.72, 51.5% above pricing. Entaj is 21% below pricing and United Carton is down 31.7%. Flynas shares debuted on Wednesday and ended 3.4% down and on Thursday were still 3.25% below IPO pricing. A trading date for SMC shares is yet to be set, with final allocations and refunds of excess subscriptions due by Tuesday.
