Way-too-early predictions for Malaki Starks' rookie season with the Ravens

Way-too-early predictions for Malaki Starks' rookie season with the Ravens A handful of interceptions highlight predictions for Malaki Starks' season with the Baltimore Ravens
There aren't many sure things in the NFL. There are a few. We know fan support for the Baltimore Ravens will never die. We know this team won't leave in the middle of the night like the Colts once did. It's certain that, as long as Lamar Jackson lines up under center (or in the shotgun formation), this team has a shot at beating anyone.
Other talking points are debatable. Can Derrick Henry run for 2,000 yards in this offense? He'll certainly have an opportunity to do so. He's already a member of the 2k Club, but recently, conversations about all things Ravens have brought up one of the young guys.
Ladies and gentlemen, feast your eyes on rookie Malaki Starks. This may sound premature, but he's one of those 'sure things'.
Bold predictions for Malaki Starks' first season (that are probably way too early).
Most have kept up with his journey and how he's been doing since his arrival. As a Freshman All-American in 2022, he helped usher the Georgia Bulldogs to a College Football Playoff National Championship win.
He was a Consensus All-American in 2023 and a First-Team All-American a year later. That 2024 season doubled as his final run at the NCAA level, one he punctuated with his second consecutive First-Team All-SEC mention.
The Ravens made him the 2025 NFL Draft's 27th selection in Round 1. The hope was that his phenomenal resume would translate. There's no reason to think it won't.
Stories of his work ethic and his blooming relationship with his position coach, Chuck Pagano, have leaked. That has only stoked the flames of a blaze building around him. Now comes the question. What might be the reasonable expectations for his first season in black, metallic gold, and purple? Well, it's wonderful that you would ask that question!
4-5 interceptions and a sack in his first Ravens season
Malaki Starks never topped three interceptions during his career at Georgia, but he also never played a 17-game regular season. Fear not, there isn't any danger of him hitting the 'rookie wall'. The opposite will happen. The extra games will allow him to showcase his brilliance to a larger audience.
Kyle Hamilton and Marlon Humphrey are elite playmakers in their own right. Opposing quarterbacks would like to avoid throwing in any of these guys' direction, but they'll have to test them at some point. Chances are they go after the rookie.
Starks will be up to the challenge. Extra opportunities and elite talent around him are key ingredients for a rookie season full of highlights, one that includes four to five interceptions and a sack.
Malaki Starks finishes third in tackles (with just under 100 total)
Expect the rookie to roam around the formation, but expect Roquan Smith and Kyle Hamilton to lead this team in tackles. Starks finishes third. He also finishes third in solo stops, and during a 17-game season, 90-95 takedowns seems like a fair number.
The PFWA All-Rookie Team
This one feels like destiny. Each season, the Pro Football Writers Association releases its All-Rookie Team. This season, that team will add Malaki Starks' name to that list. 'Sure things' remember? This is another one.
Starks ends his first season as a Defensive Rookie of the Year finalist
After accomplishing all of this and enjoying an outstanding rookie campaign, Starks will, no doubt, have a date with the NFL Honors on his agenda in February. Hopefully, the Ravens won't be attending because they're playing in Super Bowl 60, but you get the idea. Baltimore's rookie safety already feels like a Defensive Rookie of the Year nominee.
Sadly, it feels as though a snub is coming. It just feels like this award will go to a pass rusher, but that shouldn't diminish any of the excitement built during Malaki's first season. Buckle up. There are sure to be fireworks.

Bills Running Back Holds Key To 'Worst Case Scenario'

Bills Running Back Holds Key To 'Worst Case Scenario' originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Buffalo Bills know they have one of the best offenses in the league. They have a league MVP at quarterback, a great offensive line and quality skill players. Advertisement It's one of the big reasons Buffalo is considered a title contender in 2025. Not everyone is so high on the Bills' offense, though. Bleacher Report's Alex Ballentine broke down a best- and worst-case scenario for the offense next season. In the worst-case scenario, Ballentine described James Cook's contract status as a way to "water down" the offense. "James Cook had nearly 400 more scrimmage yards than any other player on the offense," Ballentine wrote. "His emergence as a dual-threat running back has been one of the reasons Brandon Beane deserves credit for putting together a supporting cast that works around Allen." Advertisement The analyst later explained why not having Cook in the offense could force the Bills to be one-dimensional and rely on Josh Allen even more. As a contributor to Buffalo's offense, there's an argument to be made that Cook is the group's best player outside of Allen. He led the league in rushing touchdowns last season and has recorded back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons. He has pushed for a new contract worth over $15 million annually. With just under $5 million in cap space, Buffalo isn't in a position to give him that kind of money. While Cook did arrive for mandatory minicamp, there's no guarantee that he will show up for training camp in a month. If he chooses to sit out, it will only draw attention to the drama of his contract situation. Advertisement According to Ballentine, that is a worst-case scenario moving forward. Bills Receiver Narrative Still Being Pushed

Bills Receiver Narrative Still Being Pushed originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Last season proved that Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen doesn't need a No. 1 receiver to be successful and lead his team to a deep playoff run. Advertisement Allen won MVP and led an offense that averaged 30.9 points per game, with a 13-3 record (sat out Week 18). This body of work suggests that the receiver room is set. But with Mack Hollins and Amari Cooper leaving, and Joshua Palmer, Elijah Moore and Laviska Shenault Jr. coming in, the Bills' weapons appear to be at least as good on paper as last season. Yet, the narrative that Allen needs more help continues to be pushed, and Bleacher Report is the latest publication to run with it, only to contradict itself. Bleacher Report lists receiver as Buffalo's biggest need, but then proceeds to say: "Josh Allen has proved he doesn't need an elite supporting cast to create an elite offense. The Bills were second in EPA per play despite Khalil Shakir leading all receivers with 821 yards. The Bills' group of playmakers was not elite, but it did work well together. Advertisement "Dalton Kincaid, Shakir and Keon Coleman are all still early in their NFL careers. If each of them takes the next step and becomes an even more reliable target for Allen, then the team should be able to make a run at being the top offense in the league in every category." Bills quarterback Josh Allen congratulates receiver Khalil Shakir on his touchdown Germano / USA TODAY NETWORK So color us confused. The Bills "need" a receiver, but if everyone improves, that could be a top unit? With Coleman entering Year 2 and Kincaid not dealing with a knee injury that had plagued him, both should see improvements in 2025. Additionally, Palmer can be seen as an upgrade over Cooper, at the very least, and possibly Hollins. Advertisement Then we have Curtis Samuel and Khalil Shakir, who round out the offense. If all take even a slight step forward, as Bleacher Report suggests, the unit could be one of the best in the league. And that's without another receiver being signed. Bills' 'Magical' James Cook Gets Brutal Prediction from Insider

Bills' 'Magical' James Cook Gets Brutal Prediction from Insider originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Last season, Buffalo Bills running back James Cook had quite the 2024 season as the offense's bellcow back. Advertisement He rushed for 16 touchdowns, tying the franchise record, while again rushing for over 1,000 yards. Plus, James rushed for another three scores in the playoffs to go with 272 yards in three games. It was also Cook's second consecutive season of 1,000+ rushing yards and a Pro Bowl nod, and now he is looking to get a new contract this offseason. But with Buffalo's finances, that will be tough, so James might have to play on the last year of his rookie deal, and if he does, he needs to play well. But Sports Illustrated's Michael Fabiano thinks Cook is set for a regression. "Cook is coming off a magical season in terms of end zone visits, scoring 18 times," Fabiano writes. "He scored just nine combined touchdowns in his first two seasons, so this was a major uptick … and it's likely to come with some regression in 2025. Cook is also looking at a potential holdout over a contract dispute, which has not been a good situation for many players in the past. Keep tabs on Cook's status." Buffalo Bills RB James Cook reacts after rushing for a touchdown against the Kansas City J. Rebilas-Imagn Images Cook's "regression" might not be down to form at all. Advertisement Backing up a 16-touchdown season is a tall order, and there aren't many backs in football who could do that. James' down season might still see him post 12 rushing touchdowns, which would still signify a good year, but a "regression" from 2024. With Cook and his contract saga showing no signs of being finalized, training camp looms as a big watch, as the running back has said he will be there, but it is unknown if he will participate without a deal. And for James to fight this "regression" talk, having a full preseason will go a long way in keeping those doubters at now. Related: NFL's Top 100 Players: Where Is Bills' MVP Josh Allen?
