Leaving Cert Diary: History and French are finished for the class of 2025

With thanks to our friends at the Irish Second-Level Students' Union (ISSU), two of their members, Chelsea who is based in Mayo and Dublin student Isabelle took the time to tell us how it went today.

Une petite aventure Française. This morning, I sat the French Ordinary Level paper- and honestly, it went better than I expected.
The reading comprehensions were interesting. One was about fashion, and the other followed a teen on holiday with his uncle. Most texts were manageable, though there was one I found slightly tricky - but nothing too overwhelming.
The usual "fill in the blanks" and form section made its return, but it wasn't too bad. The form was on sport, which was a nice topic and overall, not so challenging. There were also good options: a formal letter, a diary, a message and a postcard. The prompts were creative and allowed plenty of room to express yourself.
The listening paper was also fair. Each question brought something different, and most of it was straightforward. The last part - the news items - was a little tougher, but still manageable.
Overall, it felt like a balanced and well-structured paper with lots of familiar content.
For the Class of 2026: stay on top of your vocab and try a few past papers before the real thing. It really helps you to feel more confident and prepared.

How was history for Isabelle?
Well, the day we have all been waiting for has come. And now the past 2 years of studying have become history.
Time is never on One's side in Leaving Cert History: 2 hours and 50 minutes is a tight space of time to analyse two documents and write just over 3 lengthy essays. I had to have my watch set 5 minutes ahead just to have the smallest hope in finishing in time!
It was hard with the exam being in the afternoon, I was fighting sleep as I wrote and wrote and wrote.
The Documents Based Question (DBQ), while highly predicted to have been the Nuremberg rallies, turned out to be the Jarrow March. I liked how completely different the documents were as I was able to make quick, sharp comparisons.
I answered two questions from Ireland Topic 3: The Pursuit of Sovereignty and the Impact of Partition, and one from the United States and Wider world. In both the DBQ and main essays the questions were wildly different to how they have been in past years. Gone are the questions directly relating to the case studies; now we are seeing the case studies masquerading behind other aspects of the topic, proving to be a wild curveball for many of us.

Ibrahima Konaté disappointed with Liverpool contract offer as talks stall
Ibrahima Konaté is stalling on signing a new deal at Liverpool, raising fears at the club that another key player could run down his contract after this summer's departure of Trent Alexander-Arnold. The French defender enters the final year of his deal next month and is understood to have rejected Liverpool's initial offer of an extension. Andy Robertson is also about to enter the final 12 months of his contract, with Liverpool willing to sell him to Atlético Madrid if the left-back wants to leave. The goalkeeper Caoimhín Kelleher joined Brentford in an £18m deal this month with one year left on his contract. Liverpool plan to revive discussions with Konaté later in the summer but are adamant they will not be forced into overpaying. After a busy start to the transfer window during which Liverpool have done deals worth a combined £145.5m for Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong, Arne Slot's central defensive options are the one remaining area of uncertainty. Jarell Quansah is on the verge of completing a £35m move to Bayer Leverkusen, and Liverpool are monitoring Marc Guéhi's situation at Crystal Palace, with Newcastle and Tottenham also interested in the England international. As the Guardian reported, the 24-year-old has made clear he will not sign a new contract at Selhurst Park, and with 12 months left he is eager to secure a move to a club that can offer guaranteed playing time before next summer's World Cup. He is still very raw and, despite his success last season, there are improvements to be made. Ekitike can be guilty of a lack of composure in the final third. Last season, he had more shots than anyone in the Bundesliga (117) but managed only a 13 per cent conversion rate. Compare that to the 23 per cent that Harry Kane achieved from his 114 shots and you would be forgiven for painting a picture of wastefulness. However, it has as much to do with decision-making as it does accuracy. Ekitike likes to have a pop from range with 24 per cent of his efforts coming from outside the box, with less chance of beating the keeper. He is stronger than he looks but, even so, there are occasions where he is knocked off the ball too easily. And don't be in a rush to hand him penalty duties. Damien Duff's private family life as ex-Ireland star quits Shelbourne
Damien Duff stunned Shelbourne by quitting as manager of the Drumcondra club on Sunday - one day before the club travel to Waterford for a League of Ireland Premier Division clash. Shels released a statement confirming the Republic of Ireland legend's shock departure as they announced his assistant Joey O'Brien will take charge of the Waterford clash. It read: 'Shelbourne FC regretfully wishes to announce the departure of Damien Duff as first team manager. 'Damien informed the club this morning that, after much thought, he has made the decision to resign. He shared the news with the players earlier today. 'While all at Shelbourne FC are deeply saddened by Damien's decision, we fully respect that he feels this is the right choice for him at this time. 'During his four extraordinary years at Tolka Park, Damien transformed Shelbourne Football Club both on and off the pitch. 'Appointed in November 2021, he took over a newly promoted side and rebuilt it from the ground up. Duff guided Shels to a seventh-place finish and a first FAI Cup Final appearance since 2011 in that debut season. The following year, in 2023, a fourth-place finish brought the Reds back to European competition for the first time in 18 years. 'In 2024, Duff led the Reds to one of the greatest triumphs in the club's 130-year history, clinching the League of Ireland Premier Division title, our first since 2006. On the final day we went to Derry, where a 1-0 win at the Brandywell secured the title in dramatic fashion, marking Shels return to the summit of Irish football. 'The club wishes Damien and his family every happiness and success in the future. His impact on Shelbourne FC was transformational. Thank you, Damien, for everything.' Duff tends to keep his private life private. But here's what we know about it: The ex-Chelsea ace married his long-term love, Elaine, in 2010. Their wedding was a cosy affair at Babington House in Somerset, UK, attended by close friends and family. The couple have two children together, Woody and Darcy. Duff's son was born with a congenital heart condition, and when the former Ireland star signed for Shamrock Rovers, he pledged his entire salary to be divided between Temple Street and Children's Heart Ireland. The family reside in Wicklow. Duff earned 100 caps for Ireland. His last appearance was in Ireland's final Euro 2012 match against Italy, and he retired from international football shortly after. The skilful winger began his career at Blackburn Rovers before transferring to Chelsea. He had stints at Newcastle and Fulham before ending his career at Melbourne City and Shamrock Rovers.
