Five people have been killed in a horrific accident north of Durban in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN).
The crash happened early on Sunday morning on Eddie Hagen Drive in Cato Ridge.
'Stabbing'
ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said the road has been closed.
'Reports are that a family of six were transporting a critically injured patient who had been assaulted and stabbed to the local clinic when they lost control and left the roadway before colliding with a concrete drain,' Jamieson said.
Accident
Jamieson added that paramedics responded to this horrific collision just before 6am this morning and found emergency personnel already in attendance.
'Paramedics arrived on the scene to find total carnage. They found that the vehicle has basically split in half. Paramedics assessed the scene and found that all six male patients had sustained major injuries. Paramedics worked on two patients on the scene, however, one went into a state of cardiac arrest and was declared deceased on the scene.
'One patient with critical injuries was rushed to a nearby hospital for the urgent care that he required. A total of five have been confirmed deceased on the scene,' Jamieson said.
Investigation
Jamieson said paramedics, together with the metro police search and rescue, the eThekwini Fire Department and police are in attendance to investigate the cause of the accident.
'I would advise all motorists to avoid this area at all costs.'

Meanwhile, N3TC and its road incident management system (RIMS) partners are ready for an expected increase in southbound traffic volumes (towards KZN.
People from across Gauteng and other provinces are expected to travel to the coast during the long weekend.
N3TC chief operating officer Thania Dhoogra said conditions along the route are currently cloudy, and traffic is flowing freely.
Patience
Dhoogra urged motorists to be patient on the road.
'Road users are, however, reminded to always be prepared for sudden changes in route and weather conditions which could impact the flow of traffic, and cause congestion and delays, especially during peak traffic periods.
'Always allow for unforeseen circumstances when planning your road trip. Passengers can support drivers by being an extra pair of eyes, helping to monitor their surroundings, and anticipate dangerous situations,' said Dhoogra.

Comrades runner Moira Harding's finish could easily have ended in tragedy, says Point resident
The Comrades Marathon Association insists this year's street finish is not related to Cape Town runner Moira Harding's disappearance but will review criticism about congestion and chaos outside People's Park in Durban. Harding, 54, was reported missing when her family couldn't find her after she finished the 89km ultra-marathon from Pietermaritzburg to Durban at 4.52pm last Sunday, sparking a wide-scale search by family, friends and police. The search continued well into the night and resumed in the early hours of Monday until her husband, Daryl was contacted at about 7am by authorities to say she had been found near the NSRI base on Point Road — 6.9km away — in 'a critical state'. ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said she was 'conscious but very confused from the cold and all that she went through'. Harding was airlifted to Umhlanga hospital and sedated for several days while doctors treated her for hypothermia. Police confirmed she was found with no visible injuries, something Ongezwa Sidumo who lives on Point road said could easily have ended tragically. 'The Point area, and the south beach area as a whole, is a dangerous place for anyone, but more so for a woman wandering by herself at night. It has long been known for its crimes such as robberies and kidnappings. I've also been a victim of robbery by the vagrants, but it's not only them committing crime, even seemingly normal people driving beautiful cars,' she said. 'There's also a lot of prostitution, and those girls can attack you if you're a woman they don't know and think you're working in their territory. The municipality has improved the area massively recently, and police visibility has increased massively, but the challenges can't be resolved overnight.' It is believed that Harding became disoriented after the run and, in the confusion of the finish, couldn't find her way to the meeting spot she had arranged with her family. She then wandered off and got lost. Gauteng surgical gastroenterologist and hepato-biliary surgeon Dr Avishkar Gurunand, who shares a keen interest in exercise, said there are dangers associated with over exertion for athletes who participate in an event like the Comrades Marathon, including cardiovascular pathology that may be symptomatic of the effects of prolonged exercise, electrolyte disturbances, muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis) and dehydration. 'The human body is robust enough to handle significant physiological stress. The concern is that prolonged high-intensity activity can unmask underlying cardiovascular disease and, in rare circumstances, with fatal consequences.' 'These can be largely combated by adequate fluid intake and electrolyte replacement during the time of exercise and afterwards, but if unchecked, this can lead to renal failure, cardiac arrhythmias and a delirious state — all of which are medical emergencies, he added. Police said they would await a medical report that would determine the next course of action. According to media reports, Harding's sister, Fiona Baldwin, said she is recovering well in hospital and is awake and speaking. Baldwin slammed marathon organisers for the race's 'chaotic and poorly controlled ending'. She told reporters the chaos at the finish line may have played a role in Harding's disappearance. Unlike in previous years when the finish line down run was either the Moses Mabhida Stadium or the Kingsmead stadium, the 98th edition had a street finish line, ending at Masabalala Yengwa street near People's Park.

Youth Day weekend safety: Creecy explains why June is a ‘very unfortunate month' on SA's roads
Transport Minister says that on average, the month of June records 1 000 road fatalities every year. Minister of Transport Barbara Creecy addressing members of the media on the N12 Potchefstroom on 13 June 2025. Picture: Department of Transport While South Africans may know the festive season and Easter long weekend as the deadliest periods on the country's roads, the month of June is also a silent killer. Transport Minister Barbara Creecy and Deputy Minister Mkuleko Hlengwa launched the department's law enforcement and road safety programme on the N12 route by Potchefstroom in North West on Friday. 'This effort forms part of the department's commitment towards road safety advocacy and education, as well as to encourage young people to act responsibly, not drink and drive, and adhere to road safety rules ahead of Youth Day long weekend,' said the department. ALSO READ: Easter road fatalities and accidents on the decline, says Creecy The country will commemorate Youth Day on Monday next week, meaning South Africans will get to enjoy the long weekend. However, some may never return to their loved ones after a day or night out. June crashes Creecy said that on average, the month of June records 1 000 road fatalities every year. The majority of the victims are younger than 40 years. 'We are conducting the road safety operation in the month of June, because June historically has been one of the very unfortunate months, on average, having a fatality rate of almost 1 000 people,' said Creecy. 'Last year, 231 people lost their lives over the Youth Day weekend. What we understand is that one of the reasons June is a very dangerous month on the roads is that it's the month with the longest period of darkness. In many provinces of our country, by 5 pm, it's already starting to get dark in the afternoon. It doesn't get light before 6.30am. ALSO READ: Easter road fatalities down, but pedestrian deaths still a major concern 'On a daily basis, the highest accident rate occurs from the time of darkness until 10pm. What we also know, unfortunately, is that the majority of those who lose their lives on the roads are under the age of 40. That is the age cohort with the highest rate of accidents.' Causes of road fatalities Creecy commended the slight decrease in road fatalities in the first five months of 2025, but cautioned that the figures were still too high. 'This year, between January and May, we have had the lowest number of fatal crashes – 2022 had the highest number of crashes, at 4 188. This year, there were 3 572 fatal crashes. ALSO READ: N3 Toll urges road users to be cautious amid icy conditions Although seven provinces registered a decrease in their numbers, the Free State and Mpumalanga continued to show an upward trend. According to Creecy, 45% of those who lose their lives on the road are pedestrians. Additionally, 88% of accidents are caused by human behaviour, including walking on a highway, crossing a highway, running across the road when it is not your time in terms of the traffic lights, drunken driving, speeding texting while driving and fatigue on long-distance journeys.
