Crypto Exchange Bybit Granted MiCA License in Austria

Yahoo29-05-2025

Crypto exchange Bybit has been granted a license in Austria in compliance with Europe's framework for dealing in digital assets, the Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA) regime, according to the website of the local regulator FMA.
Europe's new MiCA rules came into force at the start of this year, prompting firms to select the most appropriate member state to base operations and passport services across the 27-country trading block.
Austria is also the MiCA home base of crypto trading firm Bitpanda which also holds a licence in Germany.
Founded in 2018 by entrepreneur Ben Zhou, Bybit, which has risen to become the second largest exchange by volume according to CoinMarketCap, is based in Dubai having moved its headquarters from Singapore in 2022.
In February 2025, the exchange was hacked resulting in the loss of $1.5 billion in assets in the largest cryptocurrency theft on record.
Bybit did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Coinbase Wins European MiCA License in Luxembourg

Crypto exchange Coinbase has won a European Union Markets in Crypto Assets license (MiCA) from Luxembourg, the company said in a statement on Friday. The exchange, which is the fifth-largest crypto exchange by volume according to CoinGecko, will now be able to offer services across the 30 nations in the European Economic Area. It joins other major exchanges which have secured the MiCA license. Bybit, the second largest exchange secured its MiCA license from Austria in May, while, OKX and secured their MiCA licenses from Malta. Though the EU MiCA license grants companies access to all the nations in the European Union plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, countries in the bloc have still been vying to attract major crypto companies. "Luxembourg has always been a key player in Europe's financial ecosystem, and we're delighted to share that Coinbase is officially establishing its European crypto hub in this dynamic country, under the Markets in Crypto Assets regulatory framework (MiCA)," Coinbase said in its statement. Luxembourg has passed four blockchain-related policies through national legislature, Coinbase said. Update (June 20, 15:18 UTC ): Adds more context to the third, fourth and fifth paragraphs. Nearly 1,000 ships see GPS jams near Iran coast, group says

Nearly 1,000 ships have experienced 'persistent and sometimes severe' GPS signal jams every day the past week near Iran as the country continues to face bombardment from Israel's military, a French naval monitoring firm warned Friday. The Maritime Information, Cooperation and Awareness (MICA) Center wrote in a post on the social platform X that the situation 'makes it harder to navigate safely at night, in poor visibility and/or when traffic density is heavy.' '(It) also can lead to accidental situations,' the group wrote. MICA said it's possible that the GPS issue may have contributed to the recent collision of two giant tankers, ADALYNN and Front Eagle, in the Gulf of Oman near the United Arab Emirates, but the organization cautioned that crash remains under investigation. Israel and Iran have been exchanging strikes for the past week, after Israel launched a surprise attack against Iran's nuclear facilities and military sites. MICA noted that maritime trade was not being targeted in an analysis of the military conflict's impact on Wednesday. 'In spite of the media narrative of a potential blockade … there is no information pointing towards a blockade,' the group wrote. It urged ships to avoid Iranian territorial waters and be aware of potential GPS jamming.

Thai SEC Consults on Rules Allowing Exchanges to Offer Utility Tokens

Thailand's Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) opened a consultation on rules for exchanges to issue their own utility tokens. The regulator is proposing allowing crypto exchanges, or a person related to the exchange, to issue utility tokens for blockchain transactions, it said on its website. Exchanges will have to disclose the names of anyone related to token issuers so the SEC can monitor for insider trading. The consultation comes as the regulator looks to strike a balance between allowing innovation while preventing illicit activity. In May it said citizens will be blocked from accessing crypto exchanges including Bybit and OKX from June 28, citing violations of the Digital Asset Business Act. In March it added Tether's USDT stablecoin and Circle's (CRCL) USDC to its list of approved tokens that can be traded on exchanges. Previously, only bitcoin BTC, ether ETH, XRP XRP, stellar XLM and some tokens used in the Bank of Thailand's settlement system were approved by the SEC. Thailands' SEC will be gathering opinions on its rules up until July 21, it said.
