Joe Gomez's Liverpool Future: Between Loyalty and Opportunity
As the summer transfer window heats up, speculation continues to swirl around the future of Joe Gomez. Despite a season of fluctuating involvement on the pitch, the versatile defender's role behind the scenes and his enduring loyalty to Liverpool make his situation increasingly nuanced. While many believed Gomez would headline Liverpool's outgoing list, the picture has shifted, thanks largely to Jarell Quansah's impending departure to Bayer Leverkusen.

Credit must go to Lewis Steele, speaking to Dave Davis for Anfield Index, for delivering fresh insight into Gomez's current mindset and the broader considerations at play in Arne Slot's post-title squad.
Quansah Exit Alters Gomez Dynamics
'It was obvious that one of him or Quansah would leave this summer,' Steele explained. 'Now that Quansah is definitely leaving [to join Bayer Leverkusen], it seems a little bit less likely that Gomez will leave as well, but I wouldn't completely rule that out at this stage.'
That shift is pivotal. Slot, preparing for his first Champions League campaign as Liverpool boss after lifting the Premier League title in his debut season, will need experienced domestic cover across his backline. Gomez's ability to play across all defensive positions and even as a makeshift holding midfielder makes him uniquely valuable.

Liverpool had reportedly placed a £30 million valuation on Gomez, anticipating bids from clubs such as Newcastle, Aston Villa, Crystal Palace, West Ham, Leeds, Everton and Sunderland. Now, with Quansah's exit reshaping the squad depth, the club's stance may evolve from inviting offers to resisting them.
Hunger and Leadership Beyond Minutes Played
Gomez's recent social media activity has offered fans a rare glimpse into his current mood. 'His post [on Instagram] about still being hungry to keep going, suggests to me that he would like to stay,' noted Steele. Despite an inconsistent campaign, that hunger hasn't gone unnoticed internally.
'He was very close to leaving last summer,' Steele added. 'There was a lot of teams interested and he actually didn't even make the squad for the opening game against Ipswich Town.'

Yet, even with minutes hard to come by, Gomez reportedly retained a key leadership presence in the dressing room. 'It's been a really frustrating year for him but he has still remained influential behind the scenes in terms of leadership.'
Slot, known for valuing character as highly as capability, may view Gomez's personality and professionalism as vital attributes during a period of evolution for the club's backline.
Decision Rests with the Player
Steele was candid in his summary: 'I think the decision remains with him. Maybe he has reached that point of his career where he wants to go and challenge himself and play every week, but then again he loves Liverpool.'

That emotional pull should not be underestimated. Gomez has been part of the club since 2015, enduring injuries, rotations and even European glory. At 28, he now finds himself at a career crossroads, torn between familiarity and the opportunity to become a guaranteed starter elsewhere.
If he does stay, it would be a significant boost to Slot's defensive depth and squad cohesion. If he goes, Liverpool would lose a quietly integral leader, not just a utility player.

Nuno Espirito Santo signs three-year contract with Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest have announced that Nuno Espirito Santo has penned a new contract at the City Ground. The 51-year-old's previous deal was set to expire next summer, but he has agreed to fresh terms that will keep him at the club until 2028, per The Athletic. Advertisement In a statement on the club website, Nuno said: 'I am delighted to be able to continue our journey at this fantastic football club. 'Since we arrived at Forest, we have worked extremely hard to create a special bond between the players, the fans and everyone at the club, which helped us achieve great things last season.' Nuno led his team to an excellent 2024-25 Premier League season, securing a seventh-place finish to qualify for the Europa Conference League play-off stage. Forest were the only team that beat champions Liverpool at Anfield. Nuno also guided his side to the FA Cup semi-finals last term, where they lost to Manchester City. Advertisement The Portuguese replaced Steve Cooper at Forest in December 2023. They were battling relegation at the time, but Nuno led them to safety. The Tricky Trees brought in some talented players the following summer but were expected to struggle again. However, they defied expectations to finish in seventh place. Nuno performed a brilliant job at Wolverhampton Wanderers between 2017 and 2021, but failed to replicate his success when he moved to Tottenham Hotspur.

Report – Ex AC Milan Star Hasn't Asked Inter Milan For A Transfer Amid Galatasaray Links

Midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu has not asked Inter Milan for a transfer despite persistent links with Galatasaray. This according to today's print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews. Advertisement It is certainly no secret that Galatasaray have set their sights on Inter Milan midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu. Reportedly, the Turkish champions have offered the 31-year-old a contract worth €10 million net per season. That will certainly be tempting for Calhanoglu. As is the chance to play for a club that he's always admitted he has a longtime support for. The Istanbul giants are ready to make an offer of around €15 million to Inter. However, this would be nowhere near the €35-40 million that the Nerazzurri want. Advertisement Nevertheless, things could change if Calhanoglu himself asks for the move. Inter will certainly have to sit down at the negotiating table if the former AC Milan and Bayer Leverkusen midfielder makes it clear to them behind the scenes that he wants to join Galatasaray. However, reports the Corriere, Calhanoglu has not asked for a move. At least not yet. And for their part, Inter don't want to wait too long. If the Turk is going to ask for the move, they would expect him to do so soon. That way, they can move quickly for a replacement.

Inter Milan Could Buy Back Italy U21 Star & Sell For A Profit Amid Lazio & Fiorentina Links

Inter Milan could buy back midfielder Giovanni Fabbian and sell him to Lazio or Fiorentina for a profit this summer. This according to today's print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews. Advertisement Giovanni Fabbian has come to the end of his second season at Bologna. The Italy Under-21 international joined the Rossoblu from Inter in the summer of 2023. And the Nerazzurri did not just loan him to the Emilian club – they sold him outright. However, as part of the deal, there is a buyback option in favour of Inter. And that clause becomes active this summer. The Corriere report that Inter can sign Fabbian back for a fee of €12 million starting this summer. Advertisement The Nerazzurri would not necessarily want to keep Fabbian in their squad. However, with interest emerging in the 22-year-old, Inter could sell him for more than they pay Bologna to sign the player back. The Corriere confirm that both Lazio and Fiorentina are keen on Fabbian. Therefore, Inter could look to get a fee higher than €12 million from either of the two. On the other hand, the Nerazzurri could also negotiate to keep Fabbian at Bologna, who would reportedly like to have him remain in their squad for next season.
