Forget Barcelona—Here's Why You Should Visit Valencia, Spain's Most Welcoming City, This Summer

Vogue5 hours ago

When it comes to visitors, Barcelona has long suffered from too much of a good thing. However, with the conversation around tourism intensifying of late and a recent rise in the daily tourist tax, it's giving other Spanish cities a moment in the spotlight. Case in point, it's southerly neighbor: Valencia. In stark contrast to the Catalan capital, Spain's third city is calling out for visitors after the devastating floods of last October deterred travelers, despite the center itself being left unscathed.
Simultaneously, this unhurried beachside city is one on the up, hot on the heels of being named both World Design Capital and Europe's Green Capital in recent years. A spree of recent design-led hotel openings in the city, a new landmark contemporary art center and a wave of creatives reviving the old fishing district of El Cabanyal all point to Valencia's renaissance—and now, before the crowds come, is the time to make a trip.

A relative hotel desert until recent years, a crop of new addresses are cementing Valencia's resurgence as a travel destination. On the edge of Ruzafa, Valencia's most bohemian neighborhood lined with vintage stores and sprawling street-side terraces, French couple Bertrand Boullay and Fabien Peronnet have transformed a typical 1924 house of the Modernisme style, the Catalan take on Art Nouveau, into La Novieta. Originally bought as a private house, the four-bed property has been painstakingly restored, rescuing the hydraulic floor tiles and beamed ceilings and then filled with a beautiful collection of antique and vintage sourced pieces.

Nobody Expects the Spanish Contradiction

To get John Authers' newsletter delivered directly to your inbox, sign up here. In Barcelona, tourists need to look out. The locals are attacking them with water pistols. They're also meting out similar treatment along Spain's beautiful Mediterranean coast, and sometimes follow up spouts of water with flares thrown into popular spots. Some carry placards proclaiming 'Your AirBNB used to be my home!' or just 'Go home!' Such protests have also hit other overcrowded European destinations, and thankfully haven't been violent. In Spain, they dramatize the contradictions in a remarkable, decade-long recovery from the euro-zone's financial crisis. That rebirth makes it something of a guinea pig for three of the rich world's biggest issues — migration, housing and the energy transition — and in certain respects a counterpoint to the United States. Both countries are dealing with the aftereffects of massive housing bubbles that came to a head almost two decades ago. Both have recovered, but did so with almost totally opposed policies now coming under strain. Tourism has been central to the Spanish revival. The sector had already developed far beyond its roots offering cheap holidays in the sun for Britons, but last year drew 134 million visitors, 10 million more than in 2023, and nearly treble the 48 million population. The intake was greater than any ever received before the pandemic. Only neighbor France attracted more tourists last year; the US was third.

Here's what you need to know about the business of travel today. Even before last week's Air India crash brought renewed scrutiny to Boeing's safety practices, the company had been ramping up its political spending in Washington, writes Contributor Dave Levinthal. During the first five months of 2025, Boeing's federal PAC distributed nearly $1 million among almost 300 political committees. These include the campaigns of dozens of members of Congress. The company, a major federal defense contractor in addition to its status as a civil aviation behemoth, also maintains a large force of D.C. lobbyists. Since 2008, Boeing has spent at least $11.9 million annually on federal lobbying efforts. In recent years, Boeing has faced heavy criticism for its corporate safety culture, with federal lawmakers hauling top executives before their congressional committees multiple times. This marks the first time a nation has integrated cryptocurrency payments across its entire tourism economy. The system works with Binance Pay and travelers can pay in more than 100 cryptocurrencies. DK Bank, the country's first fully digital, state-owned bank, converts payments instantly into Bhutan's local currency. For businesses, especially those in rural areas, the new system allows access to a global payment network, without the need for international banking links or expensive card terminals. Finally, U.S. flight sales through travel agencies are down overall, but online agencies have shown gains throughout the year, reports executive editor Dennis Schaal. Sales through OTAs rose 8% in May while those through traditional leisure agencies dropped 5%, and corporate travel agencies saw an 8% decline. has been expanding its flights business and now outsells Expedia, according to Skift Research.
