‘The Life of Chuck' Review

THE LIFE OF CHUCK IS SIMULTANEOUSLY EFFECTIVE—it jerks those tears—and almost terrifyingly ineffective, a movie that feints at a sort of transcendent human depth but has a nullity at its center that undercuts the entire premise upon closer examination.
To understand why, you'll need to know the broad strokes of the plot, including the first act twist; I think everything discussed here will be painfully obvious to any viewer about ten minutes into the movie, but still, caveat emptor. We open on 'Act Three: Thanks, Chuck,' witnesses to a world on the precipice of collapse. Marty Anderson's (Chiwetel Ejiofor) America is much like ours, if ours had everything go wrong at once. California has collapsed into the ocean; wildfires rage through the Midwest; the rest of the world is starving; and, worst of all, as the film begins the internet has collapsed. The one constant? Advertisements—on billboards, radio stations, and network-TV test patterns—thanking Chuck Krantz (Tom Hiddleston) for '39 great years.'
Retirement ads? At a time like this? Why, he looks like he's 39 himself, not a 39-year veteran of the bank—or maybe accountancy or life insurance firm; no one actually seems to know the guy—where he works. Why are these ads everywhere? And is that a tear in his eye? Hm, something feels strange about this. It's almost as if, yes, obviously, Chuck is dying, and this is all in his mind. Indeed, he dies, and we travel backwards through time from there: The second act focuses on a near-miraculous day in the life of Chuck, in which he, a distraught passerby, and a drumming busker engage in a crowd-pleasing dancing exhibition; the first on his childhood with his doting grandparents in their darling Victorian home, one with a terrifying mystery in the attic cupola.

As I said, The Life of Chuck is effective in that it acknowledges early death is intrinsically unfair, and writer-director Mike Flanagan, adapting a Stephen King short story, understands how to milk this for all its worth. We see Chuck full of life, dancing up a storm on a random street corner, the audience cheering along. It's a great set piece: well-staged, perfectly edited. I'm a sucker for a good drum solo, and while I'm not one for dancing, I still appreciate seeing rhythm on the screen. We also see Chuck near death, his child and his wife weeping over him, damning the unfairness of it all. We see Chuck as a child, full of hope for the future. We know how that turns out. Mistiness, achieved.
However, rather than serving as a 'life-affirming masterpiece,' as the advertising for The Life of Chuck has promised, the whole charade feels weirdly empty, bereft of greater meaning. And that's because the universe that Chuck has created in his mind—the one where we meet Marty and his ex-wife, who reconcile at their end—has no resonance through the rest of the film, no real connection to his life or what he accomplished or who he loved. A hippy-dippy teacher in Chuck's elementary school informs him that Walt Whitman's 'I am large, I contain multitudes' refers not to the inherent contradictions of life—the different roles we play, the hypocrisies we reconcile internally—but to an actual universe created by the randomly firing neurons in our brain, an entire cosmos of imagined existences that blink out of existence when we breathe our last. The invocation of Whitman—and, later, Carl Sagan's famous cosmic calendar, the one that informs us all of human existence takes place a few ticks before midnight in a universe condensed to a year—suggests an effort to create a sort of secular cosmology, a sense of a universe greater than the self.
But the effect is precisely the opposite. It'd be one thing if Chuck's life of the mind represented important moments and people in his actual life, if we learned that the characters we were following were key figures in Chuck's own world, if we discovered that he helped them find something deeper, something more meaningful, if he saved their lives or redirected the stream of their existence. But we . . . don't. They're just kind of random, stray thoughts. A couple of teachers, a funeral director, a little girl he saw skating on a promenade one time. And when he dies, they disappear into nothingness.
This simply does not work as a metaphor for a life well lived or a person who matters to the community; it is fundamentally solipsistic, an expression of a nearly unimaginable form of self-centeredness, almost a hope that the world ends when we die, that people cannot go on without us.
So yes, The Life of Chuck works, kinda, if what we mean by 'work' is 'it'll make you tear up.' But it's a work of nearly distressing emptiness.

She parties like it's 1899. Oregon's Adelaide Beeman-White is winding back the clock on haute couture by dressing like she stepped out of a time machine from the late 19th century. Instead of the usual suit, the 27-year-old associate attorney wears a handmade long skirt with puffed sleeves, a feathered hat and even a parasol, parroting the style of the 1800s Victorian era, Oregon Live reported. 'I'm stuck very solidly in about 1893 to '98,' the Hillsboro resident told the outlet of her Victorian-core style. 'I love that period primarily because the clothing is the best.' 4 'The speed of modern life has bothered me for as long as I can remember,' said Beeman-White. Unfortunately, the 19th-century cosplayer is not allowed the aforementioned couture in court. Like a super hero with a secret identity, the Oregonian rocks a separate normal outfit for the judge, which comprises a comparatively staid plain, black J. Crew blazer. Her style could perhaps be compared to Cottagecore — a lifestyle and fashion trend that romanticizes a slower, simpler time, a la 'Little Women' or 'Little House on the Prairie' — but for the 1800s. 4 Beeman-White even lights her house with oil lamps. Beeman-White also acts the part by lighting her bedroom with oil lamps and sewing and mending her own clothing from vintage fabrics — a process she documents for her over 20,000 followers on Youtube. The old-school litigator even wrote to AAA with a dip pen and ink when it came time to renew her membership. This 19th-century fascination began in the sixth grade, when the Pacific Northwesterner traded in her jeans for a skirt, which kept getting longer and decked out in lace as time went on. 4 'I'm stuck very solidly in about 1893 to '98,' Beeman-White declared. 'She led the military and did all these things that men would've done, that women hadn't really been doing. That was part of it.' By early high school, Beeman-White dove headfirst into the role and was even a 'celebrity' in her neighborhood with local residents comparing her to 'Mary Poppins,' per her mother. Why did she choose to live her life like the 1800s? Beeman-White explained, 'The technological discoveries and advancements that are happening from 1890 to 1910, that would've been one of the most exciting periods to be alive.' Although the lawyer clarifies that she loves the reforms of the era — ie. labor unions, woman fighting for the right to vote — and not the 'oppressive and repressive and cruel policies and things that were going on at that time.' But Beeman-White is not just wallowing in the nostalgia and conversely suggests that a Victorian pace of life benefits the mind. 'We need to take our time with things,' she said. 'Focus on actually enjoying life. It's very bad for people psychologically to be rushing around not taking time to smell the flowers.'

A new featurette for the film adaptation of Stephen King's The Life of Chuck . has been released and it focuses on the incredible supporting ensemble cast, and what they bring to the movie. The video highlights Heather Langenkamp, Mia Sara, Carl Lumbly, Matthew Lillard, David Dastmalchian, Karen Gillan, Annalise Basso, and Harvey Guillen. This is such a great, wonderful, and inspiring film and it's one that people have to go out and experience on the big screen! Director Mike Flanagan did an amazing job bringing this story to life! The Life of Chuck is 'three separate stories linked to tell the biography of Charles Krantz in reverse, beginning with his death from a brain tumor at 39 and ending with his childhood in a supposedly haunted house.' The film is described as an apocalyptic version of It's a Wonderful Life , and King, who has seen the film, says that it's 'a happiness machine.' It's also described as 'a Stand By Me for the multiple lives within each of us, pulled between our dreams and down-to-earth pragmatism.' Hiddleston previously talked about the film, saying: 'Well, he's written something very tender and very wise. I think there is a great wisdom in the soul of the story, which is that it takes courage to hold on to what is good in a world that feels like it's falling apart.' When talking about the disaster aspect of the story, Flanagan explains why this one is different: 'A disaster movie has people meeting the end while running from tidal waves, and this story has people sitting quietly holding hands looking at the stars.' Hiddleston went on to say: 'The life of every human being is a constellation, as expressed in this film. There are certain moments which will burn most brightly as individual stars. 'Sometimes it feels like the world is going to hell in a handcart, and it's full of pain and suffering, and it is—but there are moments of deep joy and deep connection.' 'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' made Mia Sara a star. Leaving Hollywood has been freeing.
Though she appeared to be on top of the world as a teen star in the '80s, the truth is that Mia Sara found the Hollywood spotlight uncomfortable. Now, at 58, she's happier than ever, thanks to a quiet home life with her husband, Brian Henson, son of Muppets creator Jim Henson, and kids Dashiell Connery, 28, and Amelia, 21. And this month, the actress returned to the big screen for the first time in a decade, starring as a grandmother in an adaptation of Stephen King's novella The Life of Chuck. Best known as Sloane Peterson in the John Hughes classic Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Sara enjoyed breakout success with roles in All My Children and the fantasy film Legend, later appearing alongside Jean-Claude Van Damme in Timecop. But after appearing in the short film Pretty Pretty in 2013, she stepped away from acting with no intention of returning — that is, until director Mike Flanagan convinced her to sign onto Chuck. 'I love Mike Flanagan, like really adore him just as a person, and we are friends, and I'm just a huge fan,' Sara tells me for Yahoo Life's Unapologetically series. 'When we met [and had dinner], Mike said, 'Why don't you work anymore?' And I said, 'Oh, it's really complicated,' and he said, 'Would you ever work again? What if I offered you something?'' Although Flanagan joked that Sara would come to 'regret that dinner,' she feels quite differently about agreeing to star as Sarah Krantz opposite Mark Hamill's Albie Krantz in The Life of Chuck. 'It was a really healing experience,' she shares. 'Mike creates an incredibly cohesive and really terrific feeling on set. It felt like really nice closure. It did me a world of good.' The harmony and inner peace Sara felt on set mirror what she's currently experiencing in her personal life as she nears 60. 'I feel a huge pressure is off to not be comparing myself to people,' she says. Our conversation touches on the power of stepping away from the spotlight, the beauty (and, yes, some "crappy" parts) of aging and how youth isn't all it's cracked up to be. (Spoiler alert: Being 'very young' contributed to Ferris being a 'cringy experience' for Sara.) What I love about my 50s is that I feel like a huge pressure is off to not be comparing myself to people. And I love the fact that my interactions with people [are] just about me, my attitude, me as a person. I don't feel like I have to get past something anymore with people. [But] there are serious bummers to do with health and pain. So, I'm just looking forward to hopefully remaining healthy and active. I have a Connemara pony called Rory, and he is the greatest pony on the face of the earth — and I'm not the only person who thinks that. I just feel like as long as I can stay in the saddle, I'm good. And for many years now, I've been using this mindfulness app called Happier. I have found it very helpful. Sometimes, for big swaths of time, I'll do it every day, and then, sometimes, I travel a lot and I drop it for a couple of weeks, but I always return to it. I feel I'm less reactive, more present and more aware. You know, my kids have noticed. And the other really good thing about getting older is I have a sense of how fortunate I am. I have a really great life, and I'm really grateful for it. I think meditation does help with that. Oh, and lots and lots of high-quality therapy! Yes, aging comes up in therapy all the time. It's a hard thing. There are definitely really crappy aspects to it that I do grapple with in therapy and with my friends. I'm fortunate to have very dear friends for many years, and we're all going through it together, and we've supported each other through some pretty scary stuff. Scary stuff starts happening at my age. I've been lucky, but I have very close friends who've had some serious illnesses. So, all of the support that you can have to help yourself and others through [the challenges of getting older] is beneficial. A long time ago, I knew this woman, a really good friend of my ex-husband [Jason Connery]. She had been a prima ballerina. I was younger, and I was just complaining about something, and she said, "Look, certain things are not gonna get better than this moment. And you're gonna look back on this moment, at whatever physical thing you're complaining about or feeling critical or judgmental of. So, just enjoy the ride." Enjoy the ride. I haven't thought about that in years, but that's something that I would tell my daughter or my son's wonderful girlfriend. But the other thing is that I've noticed that nobody really follows advice. I feel like if you feel comfortable, you could freely give advice, but never expect them to actually [take it], because we have to learn ourselves. We all have to learn things the hard way. I do. Everyone feels critical of themselves. I've never met anyone who says, 'I'm so perfectly happy with the way I look and how I feel I'm being perceived.' One of the important things to know is that you don't have control over how people are gonna feel about you. So, the thing is to focus on yourself and how you feel about yourself and also how you treat other people. It's so much more important to be kind and to be compassionate as a human being than to focus on your appearance. And that's what my husband and I have tried to model. I would worry about it around middle school when [my daughter's friends] were all endlessly on social media, but my daughter wasn't that into it. So that was lucky. I'm really working toward trying to give myself grace. Especially because of this movie that's coming out [The Life of Chuck], and there are all these retrospective blurbs, and they put a picture of me now, and then they put like all these pictures through time, and it's like, 'I'm melting!' But when I was younger, I always found older women very beautiful. So, when I look in the mirror, I see myself, and I like the way I look. [But it can be] harder when, after a long time, I'm having to confront myself onscreen. That's a very different experience, which is a little challenging. And if you have been considered attractive and beautiful or whatever, and it's a part of your identity, it's hard to let it go. But it is actually really freeing to feel like no one's looking at me. I understand what people mean about being invisible. I don't feel invisible. I just don't feel like I have to put out anymore. It's nice. I can just present myself as myself, and my interactions with people [are] about who I am. I don't feel like I'm being judged as much because of what I appear to be. I think it's possible to feel more and more aligned with who you are as you get older. I like people not looking at me. That was not always very comfortable for me. How did you deal with that as a teen, especially when you were very much in the spotlight for ? I don't think I did very well with it. I was not comfortable. I wasn't mature enough to really take advantage of it. I was really young. I'm a very introverted person. I did not have the greatest time making that movie, because I was in the most awkward stage of my actual adolescence. I was very out of my element and depth. I didn't have that high school experience. So, I felt really out of it. I was younger than the other main cast members [Matthew Broderick, Alan Ruck and Jennifer Grey], and they were all a lot more experienced than I was. And it showed in my behavior. When I look back on it, it's a very cringy experience for me. That's sadly how I feel about the movie. I absolutely recognize the durability of it, and I'm really grateful to be in it, and I appreciate the appreciation of it, but the truth is that it was a really bad moment for me.
