Iraq to set up AI data center to support Arab countries

Iraqi News03-06-2025

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – Iraq is working to establish an artificial intelligence center in Baghdad as part of a project serving Arab countries.
The Prime Minister's Advisor for Artificial Intelligence Affairs, Diaa Al-Jumaili, revealed on Tuesday that the technical and organizational steps have already started and that a meeting with the Iraqi Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, will be held soon to finalize all of the discussions, as Iraq will be required to lay the groundwork for the center, according to the Iraqi News Agency (INA).
The step follows the approval of the Iraqi Prime Minister and Arab leaders during the Arab Summit held recently in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, according to Al-Jumaili.
The Prime Minister's Office (PMO) previously said that Iraq's digital transformation is critical to the country's digital business and artificial intelligence strategy.
During his meeting last November with Deemah AlYahya, Secretary-General of the Digital Cooperation Organization (DCO), Al-Sudani stressed that the government has included digital transformation into its economic and administrative reforms, as well as electronic payments.
Al-Sudani emphasized the government's potential to make a big change in this area, as well as its willingness to collaborate with the DCO on initiatives that benefit Iraq and the region in the context of digital transformation and artificial intelligence.
In March, Ali Al-Alaq, governor of the Central Bank of Iraq (CBI), disclosed that the government is working on a comprehensive digital transformation strategy.
In a statement to INA, Al-Alaq highlighted that the government is following a plan aimed at transitioning to digital governance. He stated that Iraqi ministries would take a leading role since steps have already been taken, initiatives have been implemented, and a data center has been constructed.

US Embassy warning sparks fears of major security shift in Iraq

Shafaq News/ A senior Iraqi lawmaker warned on Friday that a potential closure of the US Embassy in Baghdad could be a 'precursor to an unprecedented security event' in Iraq or the wider region. Mohammed al-Shammari, a member of the Iraqi Parliament's Security and Defense Committee, told Shafaq News that 'the possible shutdown of the American Embassy is a serious indicator that the United States and Israel may be preparing for a dangerous operation, warranting the evacuation of diplomatic personnel.' 'This is an early warning signal that demands urgent political and security preparedness inside Iraq,' al-Shammari added. He pointed to Iraq's limited sovereignty, particularly in defense and financial matters, blaming US control over Iraqi oil revenues for hampering military development. 'If Iraq held its financial sovereignty, weapons, salaries, and pensions would be fully national,' he said, noting that the US Federal Reserve can block arms deals that don't align with Washington's preferences. Al-Shammari stressed that sovereignty is not merely territorial, but also financial, warning that the Iraqi military's weaknesses are rooted in dependence on foreign-controlled funds. Regarding the future of US forces in Iraq, he confirmed there is a binding agreement for full withdrawal by 2026, with a mutually agreed timeline currently in place. Earlier on Friday, the US Embassy in Baghdad issued a statement denying any operational changes at its Baghdad embassy or the consulate in Erbil. 'The United States remains firmly committed to advancing its policy priorities in Iraq, supporting Iraqi sovereignty, and engaging with Iraqi leaders and citizens,' the statement said. However, the embassy had issued a security alert last week warning American citizens of increased risks of violence or attacks on US interests. It advised Americans in Iraq to avoid crowded areas and locations frequented by foreigners. The State Department continues to classify Iraq as a Level 4 'Do Not Travel' destination. Last Sunday, Iraq's Kataib Hezbollah threatened to strike US bases and interests in the region if Washington intervenes militarily in the ongoing war between Iran and Israel.

Iraq urges de-escalation at UN, condemns Israeli violations

Shafaq News/ On Friday, Iraq's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Abbas Kadhim Obaid, called for urgent measures to prevent a 'catastrophic war' in the Middle East, denouncing Israeli airspace violations and urging respect for Iraqi sovereignty. Speaking at an emergency session of the UN Security Council convened to address the escalating Israel–Iran conflict, Obaid reiterated Baghdad's firm rejection of using Iraqi territory for regional confrontation. 'We warn against dragging the region into a broader conflict,' he said, condemning Israeli airstrikes on Iran and labeling them a breach of international law. 'We refuse to be a battlefield for settling scores,' he added. Obaid called on Israel to place its facilities under international supervision, urging compliance with global safeguards to reduce the risk of regional proliferation and conflict. His remarks came as Iranian and Israeli representatives exchanged accusations at the UN, blaming one another for rising civilian casualties and destabilizing nuclear brinkmanship.

US Embassy reaffirms commitment to Iraq amid regional tensions

Baghdad ( – The United States Embassy in Baghdad has confirmed that its operations, as well as those of the U.S. Consulate General in Erbil, remain unchanged despite the escalating conflict between Iran and Israel that has placed Iraq in a delicate position at the heart of regional tensions. In a statement issued today, the Embassy said: 'The operating status of Embassy Baghdad and Consulate General Erbil is unchanged. The U.S. remains strongly committed to advancing our policy priorities in Iraq, strengthening Iraq's sovereignty, and engaging with Iraqi leaders and the Iraqi people.' The reaffirmation comes as the Iran-Israel conflict enters its second week, with a series of strikes exchanged between the two rivals raising fears of a broader regional escalation. Iraq, which maintains close ties with both the United States and Iran, has found itself in an increasingly precarious position, geographically and diplomatically, as its airspace and territory have come under scrutiny amid the tensions. Despite the volatility in neighboring countries, Iraq has remained largely stable since the outbreak of hostilities. While U.S. military installations in Iraq were reportedly targeted by drones early in the conflict, no major disruptions or escalations have followed. The Embassy's statement appears intended to reassure both Iraqi citizens and international observers of continued diplomatic engagement and support for Iraq's sovereignty during this sensitive time. U.S. officials have repeatedly emphasized the importance of Iraq's stability and role in regional security.
