Sundowns' kasi flavour vs German precision: A battle to remember

Mamelodi Sundowns have been winning over new fans thanks to their exploits at the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States.
Sundowns, the perennial South African champions known as the Brazilians, kicked off their campaign with an impressive 1-0 win over Ulsan last week. They followed it up with a solid performance against German giants Borussia Dortmund, narrowly losing 4-3.
One player who's hit top form and got the world talking is – actual – Brazilian Lucas Ribeiro, who has put in a number of impressive shifts. In their opening game against Ulsan,
Sundowns found the back of the net three times, but two of those goals were ruled out. All of them were scored by Iqraam Rayners, with Ribeiro having a hand in each one.

In Sundowns' second game, Ribeiro stunned everyone in attendance at the TQL Stadium in Cincinnati when he scored a brilliant solo goal to put his team in front after just 11 minutes. He picked up the ball in his own half, and slalomed his way past a few Dortmund defenders to slot the ball past Gregor Kobel.
It was appropriate that an actual Brazilian was lighting up the stage for a team playing in yellow and blue. The Sundowns style of play, featuring short, slick passes and a patient build-up, which is colloquially known as 'shoe shine and piano,' was on full display, and the world took note.
For parts of the game, Dortmund, with their gegenpress, couldn't cope with Sundowns' kasi flavour. Many believe had it not been for Ronwen Williams' mistake in the first half, and Khuliso Mudau's own goal on the hour mark, Sundowns could have walked away with a very famous win.
Unfortunately, Sundowns' impressive performances on the world stage mean a number of clubs with big wallets will be taking note of their players. The likes of Ribeiro, Rayners, Teboho Mokoena, and Marcelo Allende might never be seen gracing the PSL again.
Orlando Pirates, Stellenbosch FC, and Kaizer Chiefs will be looking on and hoping that Sundowns lose a number of their key players ahead of the new season, as that could weaken them.
But whatever the future holds, Sundowns have already achieved something far more valuable than silverware – they've earned global respect.
For 90 minutes against one of Europe's elite, they showed that South African football belongs on the biggest stages. In a tournament designed to celebrate the best of the best, the Brazilians didn't just show up – they danced, dazzled, and nearly delivered a shock for the ages.

Runners represent Giyani well

LIMPOPO – The Giyani Gallopers Athletics Club proudly represented their town at the Comrades Marathon on Sunday, June 8, with several members earning prestigious medals, even though no golds were claimed. Another standout from the club was Beryll Monakisi, who finished her race in 11:49:17. She received special recognition from Greater Tzaneen Mayor Gerson Molapisane during the recent homecoming ceremony for Amajita coach Raymond Mdaka. The mayor praised Monakisi for proudly representing the municipality at such a prestigious national event. This year's Comrades Marathon saw a strong showing from South African athletes. Tete Dijana secured his third victory, bouncing back from last year's fourteenth-place finish to win in 5:25:28. In the women's division, Gerda Steyn claimed her fourth title, finishing in 5:51:19. Nobody can even think of slacking off when it comes to Springbok selection. This was the message from Springboks attack coach Tony Brown ahead of their season opener against the Barbarians at Cape Town's DHL Stadium on Saturday. Many of the Springboks' stalwarts ply their trade in places like Japan and Europe, where they earn a lot more money than what they would be earning in South Africa. Many of those playing abroad are experienced campaigners who have been part of coach Rassie Erasmus' two Rugby World Cup-winning squads in 2019 and 2023. But that doesn't mean they get a free ride into the Bok team. They have to maintain the same sort of levels for their club teams that they do when getting together for the Boks, because 'Big Brother' is always watching. Every player is being tracked and we are really aware of who is playing well and who is a little off the pace. 'We know who are the young guys coming through who can play Test match rugby. We are well aware of that. There are not many players we miss around the world.' However, most of the youngsters coming through and who have been added to the squad play their rugby in South Africa. Erasmus has been forced into a gradual rebuild of the Boks, with many stalwarts expected to pack it in after the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia. Many of the double Rugby World Cup-winning Boks will be in their mid-30s by the time the next tournament comes around, which has necessitated the injection of new blood. Erasmus rotated heavily in 2024, picking 50 players for the Boks and handing a dozen new players their first Bok starts. Only once did Erasmus go into a Test with an unchanged starting line-up, and that was in the Test series against Ireland. With 14 matches confirmed for 2025 and another Test also on the cards, Erasmus is likely to again rotate heavily again as they look forward to defending their title at the 2027 showpiece event. 'With every Test side, young players come in and get an opportunity to be selected for the Springboks. It's a special moment for all of those guys,' Brown said. 'It's been a good two, three weeks. The young guys definitely keep the older guys on their toes and the competition is strong amongst the squad. It can only enhance Springbok rugby.' Replacing some of the greatest rugby players to ever play the game is bound to be a tall order. The current Boks are the golden generation, players who have won two World Cups and everything else in between.

Schoolboy rugby: The unofficial 'official' Top 20 rankings

Any attempt at ranking South Africa's First XV rugby schools is guaranteed to upset as many readers as it will please. The simple fact of the matter is that there is NO possible way of accurately determining a definitive list. Many lists are to be found floating around the internet – none of which are in fact 'official'. While it's true that thanks to an increase in the number of schoolboy rugby festivals around the country more schools are playing schools they previously wouldn't have faced, no school plays every other school both home and away during the season. Hence, every list should be taken with a pinch of salt and is subjective at best. Having said that, with the second term now finished and with provinces preparing for the upcoming U18 Craven Week, here is the unofficial 'official' First XV Top 20 rankings list. NOTE: This year's U18 Craven Week will take place from 7 to 12 July at Middelburg Hoërskool in Mpumalanga.
