Defence Research and Development Organisation ( DRDO ) arm Defence Research & Development Laboratory (DRDL) in Hyderabad, achieved a major milestone in Hypersonic Weapon Technology on Friday. They successfully conducted a long-duration Active Cooled Scramjet Subscale Combustor ground test for over 1,000 seconds at the newly established Scramjet Connect Test Facility in Hyderabad, as per the Ministry of Defence. This ground test follows a previous test conducted in January 2025, which lasted for 120 seconds. With this latest success, the system is expected to be ready for full-scale flight-worthy combustor testing soon. Hypersonic Cruise Missile is a class of weapons that can travel more than five times the speed of sound (> 6100 Kmph) for long duration and is powered by an air-breathing engine. Air breathing propulsion systems, having supersonic combustion, plays a critical role for long-duration cruise conditions," the release said. The test not only validates the design of the long-duration scramjet combustor but also the capabilities of the test facility. It is the result of collaborative efforts among DRDO labs, industry, and academia, laying a robust foundation for the nation's Hypersonic Cruise Missile Development Programme.Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised the achievement, and said, "This success is a reflection of the Government's strong commitment in realizing critical Hypersonic Weapon Technologies for the nation."Hypersonic missiles are a cutting-edge class of weaponry that can reach speeds exceeding Mach 5, which is over 5,400 kilometers per hour. These advanced missiles have the capability to evade current air defense systems, delivering swift and impactful strikes.Countries such as the United States, Russia, India, and China are actively developing hypersonic technology.A crucial component of hypersonic vehicles is the scramjet, an air-breathing engine designed to maintain combustion at supersonic speeds without any moving parts. Operating a scramjet is akin to keeping a candle lit in a hurricane, as it utilizes a unique flame stabilization method to sustain continuous combustion even at air speeds greater than 1.5 kilometers per second.

In A First, Israel Uses Barak System Co-Developed By India To Shoot Down Iran's Drones

Last Updated: The 'Barak' air defence system used by Israeli military was co-developed by India's DRDO, and was used during Operation Sindoor to intercept a Pakistani missile. The Israeli Air Force deployed its advanced 'Barak' air defence system to intercept an Iranian unmanned aerial vehicle that entered Israeli airspace, it said on Friday. The Barak system was jointly developed by India's Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI). It is designed to safeguard against aerial threats, including UAVs, cruise missiles and other airborne targets. 'Earlier today, the 'Barak" system of the Air Force's air defense system intercepted an unmanned aerial vehicle that crossed into Israeli territory. The 'Barak" system was developed in Israel to protect against aerial threats," said the Israeli military. מערכת ״ברק״ בשימוש ראשון במערך ההגנה האווירית של חיל האוויר יירטה כלי טיס בלתי מאויישמוקדם יותר היום מערכת ״ברק״ של מערך ההגנה האווירית של חיל האוויר, יירטה כלי טיס בלתי מאוייש שחצה לשטח ישראל. מערכת ״ברק״ פותחה בישראל על מנת להגן מפני איומים אוויריים. חיל האוויר ימשיך לפעול… — צבא ההגנה לישראל (@idfonline) June 20, 2025 'The Air Force will continue to operate to intercept targets that threaten the skies of the State of Israel and the maintenance of air superiority in the region." What Is Special About 'Barak' System? The Barak air defence system is an advanced, short to medium-range missile defense system developed by Israel to protect naval vessels and land targets from UAVs, cruise missiles and aircraft. It uses radar-guided surface-to-air missiles capable of intercepting multiple targets simultaneously. The Barak-8 missile system, also known as MR-SAM, was co-developed by India's DRDO and Israel's IAI. The DRDO developed critical components such as the dual-phase rocket motor. Notably, the Barak system was used recently by India during Operation Sindoor, when it intercepted a Pakistani Fatah-II missile targeting Delhi at Haryana's Sirsa. First Published:

EU launches radical smartphone labels to expose flaws and features — here's what you need to know

What does the new EU smartphone energy label actually show? Energy efficiency class: Rated from A (most efficient) to G (least efficient). Battery endurance per charge: Shows how long a phone lasts on a full battery. Drop test durability: A rating from A to E based on repeated free-fall tests. Battery life cycle: Number of full charge-discharge cycles it can handle. Repairability rating: A to E scale showing how easy the device is to repair. Ingress protection (IP rating): Resistance to dust and water. Product registration: All details are stored in the EPREL (European Product Registry for Energy Labelling). Which phones and tablets are affected by the EU energy label rule? Smartphones (on cellular or satellite networks) Tablets with screens between 7 and 17.4 inches Cordless landline phones Feature phones (without internet or third-party apps) Live Events Devices released before June 20, 2025 Phones with rollable displays High-security smartphones (for government or defense use) Tablets with full-featured desktop OS (like Windows 10/11 Pro) What are the new eco-design rules that every phone must follow? Durability: Must survive accidental drops and meet dust/water resistance standards. Battery longevity: Batteries need to last at least 800 full cycles and still retain 80% of their original capacity. Repairability: Brands must offer spare parts within 5–10 working days, for at least 7 years after the device is off shelves. Software support: Operating system updates are now required for 5 years from end-of-sale date. Repair access: Independent repair shops must get equal access to software tools and firmware. How is battery life measured under this new EU regulation? What does this mean for consumers and the smartphone industry?
