Ship accidents: SDMA launches Web Application
Thiruvananthapuram, Jun 19 (UNI) The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has developed a web application to collect information about objects washing ashore or floating in the sea in connection with recent ship accidents off the Kerala coast.
The app collects details such as the name and mobile number of the person reporting the object, a description of the item, its live location or nearest landmark, and images.
So far, 65 containers linked to the ship accident have been recovered along the coast and relocated to various ports.
In Thiruvananthapuram district, 21 barrels found near Vizhinjam and Kovalam have been moved to secure locations at the Vizhinjam port. Two barrels suspected to be related to the accident washed ashore in Alappad (Kollam district) and Kumbla Koyippadi (Kasaragod district).
The vessel involved in the incident, Van Hai 503, has now been moved 57 nautical miles away from the Kerala coast. Efforts are ongoing to tow it further out to sea. Reports indicate that the ship is still emitting smoke and fire.
According to information from the Coast Guard, there is a possibility that containers that fell from the ship may wash ashore along the southern part of Ernakulam district and the coastal areas of Alappuzha and Kollam districts.
In this context, the SDMA emphasized that no one should touch or approach any suspicious object found along the shore. People must maintain a distance of at least 200 meters and inform the matter to the SDMA emergency number 112.

Police nabs drug peddlers with heroin in Jammu
Jammu, June 20 (UNI) Police on Friday arrested three drug peddlers with a contraband of heroin here from General Business Stand area. The police spokesman said that three notorious drug peddlers were arrested from the Bus Stand area with contraband of 11 grams of heroin and a car in which they were travelling, was also seized. Acting on specific input, a police team from Police Station Bus Stand led by SHO Inspector Vikas Dogra apprehended the accused persons identified as Chirag Atri, Vinod Kalotra and Amit Kalotra, all residents of Chak Jarala, Bishnah, Jammu. One of the accused, Chirag Atri, police said is a hardcore,notorious drug peddler who was previously detained under the PIT NDPS Act by Jammu Police in 2024 and was released recently after completion of the detention period. Despite this, he continued his involvement in illegal drug trafficking, adding he said that two of his properties were also attached by Police Station Bishnah in 2024 as part of legal action under the NDPS Act. However, police have registered a case under relevant sections and started the investigations. Indian student dies in Canada, reason unclear
New Delhi, June 20 (UNI) An Indian student, Tanya Tyagi, of Calgary University in Canada has died, the Indian Consulate in Vancouver said. The Consulate did not give reason for death but said it is in touch with the authorities and will provide all assistance to the bereaved family. 'We are saddened by the sudden demise of Ms. Tanya Tyagi, an Indian student at University of Calgary. The Consulate is in touch with the authorities and will provide all required assistance to the bereaved family. Our heartfelt condolences and prayers are with his family and friends of the deceased,' the Consulate said in a post on X. Tanya was pursuing her Masters in Food Safety and Quality in Canada. While the cause of her death is unknown as the Indian Consulate has not said anything, a post on X by one Ishu Tyagi (advicate) while appealing for help said Tanya had died of 'heart attack' on June 17. He said Tanya was a resident of Ṇortheast Delhi and had gone to Canada for studies. Tanya's family has appealed to the Prime Minister for bringing her body back home. Tanya's death follows several incidents involving Indian students in Canada in recent months. Russia closely monitoring billionaire Samvel Karapetyan's arrest in Armenia, says Kremlin
Moscow/Yerevan, June 20 (UNI) Russia is closely monitoring the situation around Russian billionaire entrepreneur and philanthropist Samvel Karapetyan's arrest in Armenia, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Friday. "Of course, we are following it. For us, he is a Russian citizen. We do not want to interfere in Armenia's internal affairs, but naturally, we closely monitor everything related to a Russian citizen," Peskov told reporters on the sidelines of the 2025 St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), reports TASS. On Wednesday, a court in Yerevan arrested Karapetyan for two months on charges of public calls to seize power in Armenia, his lawyer Liana Gasparyan said. Karapetyan, a Russian citizen of Armenian origin, has drawn scrutiny after expressing support for the Armenian Apostolic Church amid its tensions with the government of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. Condemning the arrest, Moscow Patriarchate (another name for Russian Orthodox Church) representative, Vachtang Kipshidze told Sputnik 'The Armenian Apostolic Church is the most authoritative social force in Armenian life. Its freedom, independence, and internal autonomy are non-negotiable. Any attempt to undermine them is unacceptable.' When defenders of faith and tradition like businessman and philanthropist Samvel Karapetyan are targeted, society risks trading stability for persecution, the Patriarchate warned. The detention of Karapetyan – a vocal supporter of the Armenian church – is part of a broader campaign to silence voices standing with Armenia's spiritual foundations, claimed Kipshidze. The Armenian Church in Moscow has also slammed the arrest, calling it shameful, and claimed that it was part of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan's war with the Church, using fear tactics and repression to silence voices.
