Lowell man gets 4 years for shooting at semi on rural highway

Yahoo14-05-2025

A Lowell man got four years in prison Wednesday for shooting at a semi in April 2023 on a rural highway near Lake County's southern border. No one was hurt.
He then fired more shots at the road 12 hours later in White County.
Kevin Perfetti, 55, pleaded guilty in March in Lake Superior Court to intimidation. He was originally charged in an attempted murder case.
Defense lawyer Lonnie Randolph II said his client otherwise didn't have any criminal history, but spiraled after his mother's 2017 death. Perfetti already spent two years in jail and would respond to rehabilitation, he said.
His client struggled with depression and was using drugs the week the shootings happened, he said.
Court records show Perfetti pleaded guilty to intimidation in White County and was sentenced to about two years in February 2024.
Lake County Deputy Prosecutor Adam Martin acknowledged Perfetti's mental health challenges, but said the case had 'serious charges' and someone could have been really hurt. He asked for four years in prison.
Randolph disputed Martin's request, saying the case was overcharged from the start. Martin told Vasquez prosecutors felt the attempted murder case was appropriate.
Perfetti said in court what he did was 'reckless' and apologized.
Vasquez told him he could have killed someone.
Court records show a truck driver told police he was driving with a female passenger west on Indiana 2 around 1 a.m. April 26, 2023 when a black SUV with a temporary license plate drove erratically, sped in front of them, then kept braking.
The driver sped ahead.
Up the road, the semi driver saw the man out of the car with a firearm and saw 'flashes' and heard multiple shots.
The SUV driver got back into the vehicle and made a U-turn driving off east.
Bullets struck the semi's grille, right front fender, the right tire. The back doors had at least 10 bullet holes.
Another semi driver said she was driving south on I-65 in White County the same day when a black SUV did the same thing.
The other driver put a gun out the window and fired shots, according to the affidavit.
An Indiana State Trooper found Perfetti in a Boone County rest stop. His 2020 black Chevy Tahoe had temporary plates. Inside his vehicle, police found a semi-automatic pistol, a semi-automatic rifle, a shotgun, a gun magazine clip, ammunition and casings.
Perfetti said in a police interview he passed a semi, which flashed their lights at him. He pulled in front of it and 'brake checked' it. He admitted he fired shots in a 'road rage' incident in White County.

19 charged in alleged Mexican Mafia conspiracy to kill L.A. rap artist

Los Angeles County prosecutors on Wednesday charged 19 people with conspiring to murder a rapper who allegedly angered a member of the Mexican Mafia, a prison-based syndicate of Latino gang members. According to a complaint filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court, accused Mexican Mafia member Manuel 'Snuffy' Quintero issued an order in 2022 to kill Nelson Abrego, who performs under the name Swifty Blue. In the complaint, prosecutors described a sprawling conspiracy that played out over TikTok messages and recorded jail calls, drawing in prisoners from Kern County, jail inmates in downtown Los Angeles and gang members in Paramount, the southeast Los Angeles County city that both Quintero and Abrego call home. Quintero, 49, was arrested Wednesday and has yet to enter a plea. It wasn't clear from court records whether he has a lawyer. A longtime member of the Paramount Varrio gang, Quintero has served prison time for assault, manufacturing methamphetamine and false imprisonment, court records show. On New Year's Eve in 2022, an alleged subordinate of Quintero, Giuseppe 'Clever' Leyva, told an informant he'd notified gang members in Paramount, Compton and downtown L.A. that they had instructions to attack Abrego 'on sight,' the complaint says. Leyva, 34, is now in custody on an unrelated federal case that charges him with selling drugs and guns in Imperial County. He pleaded guilty to trafficking methamphetamine in March and has yet to be sentenced. His attorney in the federal case didn't immediately return a request for comment. After the informant asked if 'Snuffs is mad' at the rapper, Leyva allegedly said of Abrego: 'F— him.' It's unclear why Quintero was angry with Abrego, who could not be reached for comment Wednesday. In a 2024 interview with The Times, the rapper declined to discuss any potential issues with the Mexican Mafia or 'jailhouse politics.' Abrego previously said his music resonates with people because 'everybody wants to be a gangster.' 'Whether you're a lawyer, a police or a kid going to school, everybody wants to be big, bad and tough,' he said in 2024. Eight months after he spoke to the informant, the complaint says, Leyva warned another person in a TikTok message to stay away from the rapper. 'Let me give u a lil 411 s u won't get mis guided with the internet,' he wrote, according to the complaint. 'With Swifty his career is done.' 'I talked to him tried to guide him but he didn't listen,' Leyva allegedly continued, adding that now the rapper was 'getting his blues' in Men's Central Jail. In November 2023, Abrego was jailed on a gun possession charge. Onesimo 'Vamps' Gonzalez, held two cells down from the rapper, called his mother and told her to ask an associate if 'the one who sings' was 'still good,' according to the complaint. Gonzalez's mother hung up. When her son called back, she allegedly said, 'He's no good.' Both Gonzalez and his mother are charged in the conspiracy. Gonzalez was already in custody; Dominga Gonzalez, 66, was arrested Wednesday at her Bellflower home, according to a statement from the FBI. Two days after mother and son spoke, another jail inmate, Jonathan 'Dreamer' Quevedo, called a man imprisoned in Kern County who was using a contraband cell phone, according to the complaint. After mentioning 'Swifty Blue,' Quevedo allegedly asked Jacob 'Eagle' David if he recalled a 'raza rapper' who was 'in the shower.' Prosecutors believed this was a reference to Jaime Brugada Valdez, a rapper known as MoneySign Suede who was stabbed to death in the showers at the Correctional Training Facility in Soledad in 2023. 'The end result should be the same,' allegedly replied David, who was imprisoned for carjacking and robbery. The next day, the complaint says, David instructed Quevedo to tell the attackers: 'Handle that s— with prejudice... You know how that's like a court term? Well, this s— [is] with prejudice.' Quevedo allegedly confirmed it was 'already in motion.' When inmates were let out of their cells at 5:50 the next morning to take a shower, Adrian 'Slick' Bueno, Andrew 'Largo' Shinaia and Jude 'Crazy' Valle entered Abrego's cell, the complaint says. While Michael 'Weasel' Ortiz obstructed a nearby camera, Bueno, Shinaia and Valle beat the rapper and 'sliced' him, prosecutors charged. About five hours later, Quevedo called a woman from jail and asked her to tell David in state prison that 'old boy got his rap session,' according to the complaint. 'They didn't really get a good show,' Quevedo allegedly said. 'Expect them to be performing in probably the 4000 floor' — another area of the jail — 'here soon.' The attempt on Abrego's life was unsuccessful, and by March 2024, the complaint says, Leyva told Joshua 'Demon' Euan in a TikTok message the rapper was recording a live stream outside his family home 'as we speak.' Euan drove to the house at 1 a.m. and sent Leyva a photograph of a gun in the cup-holder of a car, according to the complaint. 'He ain't here,' he wrote to Leyva. Later, Euan allegedly told Leyva he sent people to vandalize Abrego's family home. According to the complaint, he sent photographs of graffiti that read, 'Swifty Blue 187,' a reference to the California penal code section for murder. Euan, 37, eluded arrest Wednesday and remains at large, according to the FBI.

Woman allegedly married ex-boyfriend without his consent, police say

Woman allegedly married ex-boyfriend without his consent, police say A central Texas woman is facing a stalking charge and has been ordered to stay away from her ex-boyfriend after authorities say she married him without his consent and then left a copy of the marriage certificate at his home. Kristin Marie Spearman, 36, was arrested and charged with third degree felony stalking, the Beverly Hills Police Department in Texas said in a news release. As of Wednesday, June 18, Spearman has been released on bond and an emergency protective order was put into place, according to Beverly Hills Police Chief Kory Martin. "Making sure this situation does not escalate has been a primary focus," Martin said in a statement on June 18. USA TODAY has reached out to the McLennan County District Attorney's Office to see if the reverend involved will face charges. It was not immediately clear on June 18 if Spearman has legal representation. Police said she got a local reverend to sign the marriage license, which she then filed with the local clerk's office. The reverend involved is fully cooperating with law enforcement and "has expressed his sincere remorse for the occurrence," Martin said. "To assist with public knowledge regarding this, we never discuss assumed or pending charges prior to their execution," Martin said. Here's how the case has developed so far. 'Congrats, maybe call your wife' The victim, a 42-year-old man, contacted Beverly Hills police in Texas on June 13, police said in the news release. He said he had been away and when he returned home, he found a Bath & Body Works gift bag with products inside. According to a complaint obtained by USA TODAY, there were two documents inside the bag, including: A picture of his ex-girlfriend, Spearman, holding a marriage certificate showing the pair had been married. A certified and embossed copy of the marriage license, which had been filed with the county clerk's office. There was also a tag that read "Congrats, maybe call your wife," according to the complaint. The man said he had been in a relationship with the victim and the couple took steps to get a marriage license in June 2025, per the complaint. The pair then got into an argument and the man ended his relationship with Spearman, told her to stop contacting him, and changed his number. Spearman allegedly got the local reverend on June 13 "to certify the victim and Kristin in the Holy Union of Matrimony," according to police. The man wasn't at the ceremony and didn't know it was happening, police said. Spearman then went to the county clerk's office and filed for a certificate of official marriage. Police still collecting information Spearman was arrested at her home near Hewitt, about 10 miles southwest of Waco. She was taken to the McLennan County Jail and then released. As of June 18, police are still collecting information. Spearman's ex-boyfriend has had to "take a lot of steps to fix the problem along with costs," Martin said. The Beverly Hills Police Department said it is working with the McLennan County District Attorney's Office to see if any other laws were broken. Saleen Martin is a reporter on USA TODAY's NOW team. Who is Brady Kiser? What to know about influencer Emilie Kiser's husband

The husband of Chandler-based social media influencer Emilie Kiser told police he was watching their newborn when their 3-year-old fell into the pool and drowned, according to search warrant applications obtained by The Arizona Republic. Brady Kiser told officers he lost sight of Trigg Kiser for three to five minutes before finding the boy floating in the family's backyard pool, according to the applications, which included sworn police affidavits summarizing a police interview with Brady Kiser. In May, Emilie Kiser filed a lawsuit to block government records about the investigation into Trigg Kiser's drowning from being released to the public, arguing that doing so would violate her family's privacy. Emilie Kiser's legal team has since agreed that some records about the investigation into her son's death, such as redacted police and medical examiner reports, could be released. But whatever is made available should balance her privacy against the public's right to know, they said. The search warrant applications, which were granted, sought surveillance footage at the home to corroborate Brady Kiser's statements to police. The applications were public documents filed with the Maricopa County Clerk of the Superior Court. Don't miss the important news of the day. Sign up for azcentral newsletter alerts to be in the know. Brady Kiser is the husband of Emilie Kiser and the father to their late son, Trigg, 3, and their surviving son, Theodore, who was born earlier this year. Brady Kiser was frequently featured in his wife's social media posts, which focused on family, parenthood, nutrition and other aspects of her daily life. Trigg was hospitalized on May 12 after he fell into the family's backyard pool in Chandler. Brady Kiser told police he was distracted by Theodore and had lost sight of Trigg for roughly three to five minutes before finding him floating in the pool, according to search warrant applications obtained by The Arizona Republic. Once he saw that Trigg was in the pool, he jumped in to get the boy and called 911, according to police records. Investigators in the search warrant applications said they wanted to obtain home surveillance video so they could corroborate Brady Kiser's statements. The couple met in August 2018 and married in November 2019, according to an Emilie Kiser TikTok post. Brady Kiser is 28 years old. The couple moved to Arizona so Brady Kiser could pursue work in solar sales, according to a YouTube video Emilie posted in March 2024. She also said he runs his own car-detailing business. The couple has lived in Chandler since 2024, according to Emilie Kiser's TikTok account.
