'Really special': Hundreds take part in MND Mile
Hundreds of people took part in an inclusive mile-long run ahead of the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon this weekend.
The MND Mile took place earlier around the Leeds Beckett Headingley Campus, ahead of the full and half marathons on Sunday.
The run was set up so people of all abilities could fundraise in honour of rugby league legend Burrow, who died last year after living with motor neurone disease (MND).
Participant Tom Davies, who was diagnosed with MND at the age of 29, was pushed around the route by his partner, Alex Ross, before then getting up to walk across the finish line. Ms Ross said: "To do this with Tom has been really special."
Ms Ross added: "Tom was diagnosed last July and it has been a really challenging time.
"He is so brave and just the way he has faced everything has kept me strong and being able to do something like this together is really special."
Mr Davies added he had enjoyed the race as everyone had been "so friendly".
Former rugby player Kevin Sinfield also took part in the mile and is taking part in the marathon on Sunday in honour of his former team-mate and friend.
He said: "The Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon has been a real success over the last couple of years and we will all get to share in that tomorrow, but for people who can't run that distance for whatever reason, this is a real inclusive event that they can share together."
The mile-long route was set up by the Run For All charity and Leeds Beckett University.
The Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon launched in 2023 to honour Burrow's campaign to fund research into MND.
The former Leeds Rhinos player had lived with MND after he was diagnosed in late 2019. He died in June at the age of 41.
With the help of Mr Sinfield, they both raised more than £15m for MND charities and both men were also awarded CBEs in the 2024 New Year Honours.

SUPER skaters put on a stunning show for more than 100 friends and family members in Greenock. The showcase featured 26 skaters aged between seven and 31, who dazzled with their routines on the ice at the Waterfront Rink. "From solo routines to duets and group numbers, their energy and talent shone through in every routine." The Tele caught up with Megan at the dress rehearsal and said that she had been impressed by the standard and that all the girls had trained very hard. Megan said: "It's nice to see all the skaters coming together as one team. "It's lovely for the parents to see all the hard work their children have done." It has two groups - one from 14 and under and the other for those 15 and over. Megan said she had had rave reviews from from parents and audience members. One said: "This has to be hands down one of the best nights. From decor, routines, getting to see girls free skates, the dresses, costumes, lighting, the lot. Just wow. "This was a brilliant night." The 34 year-old Englishman has one of the most relaxed swings on tour, with his unique shortened follow through that looks so good it's a wonder he could ever hit a bad shot. Though Fleetwood has eight wins internationally, he has yet to win on U.S. soil on the PGA Tour. Not that he hasn't come close. Fleetwood has 41 top-ten finishes on the PGA Tour — the most top-ten finishes without a win from any player over the last 40 years. Fleetwood held a sizable lead going into Sunday, leading the field by three strokes. It was only the second time in his career he'd held the 54-hole lead/co-lead. But, that lead quickly faded at the start of the final round as Fleetwood got off to a rocky start, bogeying three of the first four holes, including two three-putts. Fleetwood also struggled off the tee early in the final found, only hitting two fairways in the first six holes. He would then find the bunker off the tee on the 17th hole and deliver a clutch shot to hole-high, draining a five-footer center cup for par to carry the one stroke lead into the final hole. But it wasn't meant to be. A late club change on the 18th hole from Fleetwood left him short and left of the green, 50 feet from the hole, opening the door for Keegan Bradley who stepped through in dramatic fashion, throwing a dart from the fairway to five feet. Winning a 72-hole stroke-play event is hard, but winning a major amateur championship seems even more daunting with two rounds of qualifying and then six rounds of match play. Advertisement Ethan Fang of Oklahoma State University accomplished the overwhelming by defeating Ireland's Gavin Tiernan 1-up in The Amateur Championship in a 36-hole final on Saturday at Royal St. George's The 130th edition of the oldest amateur championship didn't disappoint, with a match on paper that seemed to be one-sided; Fang is seventh in the World Amateur Rankings, while Tiernan is 1,340th in the world. Through the 32nd hole, neither Fang nor Tiernan had a lead larger than 1-up, but when the Irishman from County Louth bogeyed the 33rd hole, the par-4 15th at Royal St. George's, the OSU Cowboy had a 2-up lead with only three holes remaining. That is when the East Tennessee State University golfer turned it on, making long birdie putts on the 34th and 35th holes to erase the 2-down deficit, making the 36th the pivotal hole of the match. After losing the lead, Fang didn't disappoint, winning the match with a birdie at the last to be the first American to take the oldest amateur title since Drew Weaver in 2007.
