108 MMEA Search and Rescue Ops conducted up to May

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has conducted 108 search and rescue (SAR) operations up to May and rescued 203 out of the 251 victims.
MMEA director-general Admiral Maritime Datuk Mohd Rosli Abdullah said that during the same period, 36 victims lost their lives while 12 more have not been found.
Sharing the 2024 statistics, he said the MMEA recorded 226 cases via the search and rescue operations (Carilamat), involving 1,348 victims.
'Of the total, the MMEA saved 1,259 lives, while 64 died and 25 still missing at sea,' he said in a statement issued today in conjunction with the Maritime Safety Awareness Day (HKKM), which has been celebrated since 2021.
To enhance operational efficiency, Mohd Rosli said the MMEA has developed its own Carilamat standard operating procedures (SOP) to ensure the efficiency, speed and safety of every rescue operation.
He said that the responsibility of the team to lead SAR operations in the country's waters, including in the open sea, is stipulated in Sections 6(a) and 6(b) of the MMEA Act 2004 (Act 633), which clearly grants the MMEA the mandate to head SAR operations in the country.
This mandate, he added, is reinforced by the National Security Council (NSC) Directive No. 20, which names the MMEA as the main agency for maritime disasters, based on the National SAR Manual (Namsar) as the primary reference.
Mohd Rosli said there is no such thing as a 'day off' for the MMEA because any emergency requires immediate action, regardless of time or weather conditions.
'Assets such as patrol boats and helicopters are always on standby around the clock for deployment,' he said.
In addition to its responsibilities in SAR operations, he said the MMEA also periodically carries out SAR Prevention programmes in all states and maritime zones to increase maritime safety awareness.
'Community briefings, talks, exhibitions, brochure distributions, joint dialogues with fishermen are all part of its approach to draw close to the maritime community,' he said.

Seven anglers float for four hours after boat sinks off Santubong

KUCHING: Seven anglers were left adrift at sea for nearly four hours after their boat sank off the northern coast of Tanjung Po in Santubong yesterday afternoon. A leak is believed to have caused the boat to capsize around 11am. All seven men, who were wearing life jackets, floated in the open sea before being rescued by a passing merchant vessel at about 3.30pm. Sarawak Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) director First Admiral Mohd Khairi Abd Aziz said the Kuching Maritime Rescue Sub Centre was alerted to the incident at 4.45pm by the Kuching Port Authority. "The alert came after the merchant vessel MTT Lumut sent a distress signal via radio at 4.23pm, reporting a sunken fishing boat about 10 nautical miles north of Tanjung Po," he said in a statement today. He added that the seven victims were rescued by another merchant vessel, MTT Rajang, which happened to be nearby. Following the alert, MMEA deployed its KILAT 35 vessel to meet up with MTT Rajang and bring the anglers safely back to shore. "They were unharmed and arrived at the Tun Abang Salahuddin Maritime Complex jetty at 7.08pm," he said.

RM1 million boost for Kampung Temerlok through MMEA community programme

IPOH: A total of RM1 million has been allocated for the development of Kampung Temerlok in Trong, near Taiping, under the MADANI Adopted Village initiative carried out by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA). MMEA director-general Admiral Maritime Datuk Mohd Rosli Abdullah said the agency's efforts now extend beyond maritime security, with a renewed focus on uplifting inland rural communities. 'Today, MMEA proves that our role goes beyond safeguarding the seas. We are also committed to serving the people through community-based programmes and targeted outreach efforts,' he said during the MMEA's Qurban and Spiritual programme held in the village today. Among the five key projects to be funded through the special allocation from the Finance Ministry is the construction and repair of the Sungai Tok Lin fishermen's jetty, a vital economic lifeline for local fishermen. Other projects include roof repairs at Al-Mahmudiah Religious School, refurbishment of the Flood Relief Centre at Sekolah Kebangsaan Temerlok, maintenance and repair works at Masjid Al-Mahmudiah, and cleaning of the mosque grounds and the nearby Muslim cemetery. Masjid Al-Mahmudiah also received two air-conditioning units, installed in its meeting room. More than 150 MMEA personnel took part in a gotong-royong (communal work) with villagers to spruce up the village, mosque, and cemetery. Mohd Rosli added that the agency also donated three cows for the Aidiladha sacrificial rites, with meat distributed to 200 residents, including senior citizens, single mothers, and underprivileged families.
