MMEA monitoring social media promoting illegal migrant transport services
KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) is monitoring social media accounts promoting illegal migrant transport services and will work with the police and other agencies to investigate and act against those involved. Its director-general, Admiral Datuk Mohd Rosli Abdullah, said this follows promotions by syndicates and irresponsible individuals offering such services to foreigners without valid documents, using unregulated maritime routes. He said such activities not only violate national laws but also pose a threat to the country's security and sovereignty. "Aside from breaking the law, these actions endanger lives. The parties involved do not consider safety measures, such as providing life jackets or flotation devices, and often overload the boats beyond their capacity," he said. Rosli added that the MMEA will also report these promotional activities to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to block the identified social media accounts from continuing to advertise the services. "The MMEA will not compromise and will not hesitate to take more aggressive measures, particularly by increasing patrols and enforcement operations along the nation's maritime borders. "We have also deployed aircraft to conduct aerial surveillance and enhanced radar monitoring under the Sea Surveillance System (Swasla) to detect the presence of foreign boats," he said. As of 2024, he said a total of 68 attempts to smuggle undocumented migrants had been successfully foiled, resulting in the arrest of 236 individuals from various countries. He also urged the public, especially the fishing community and coastal residents, to serve as the eyes and ears of enforcement agencies by reporting any suspicious activities. "Information can be reported via the 999 emergency hotline or to the nearest MMEA operations centre for immediate action," he said.

RM1 million boost for Kampung Temerlok through MMEA community programme
IPOH: A total of RM1 million has been allocated for the development of Kampung Temerlok in Trong, near Taiping, under the MADANI Adopted Village initiative carried out by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA). MMEA director-general Admiral Maritime Datuk Mohd Rosli Abdullah said the agency's efforts now extend beyond maritime security, with a renewed focus on uplifting inland rural communities. 'Today, MMEA proves that our role goes beyond safeguarding the seas. We are also committed to serving the people through community-based programmes and targeted outreach efforts,' he said during the MMEA's Qurban and Spiritual programme held in the village today. Among the five key projects to be funded through the special allocation from the Finance Ministry is the construction and repair of the Sungai Tok Lin fishermen's jetty, a vital economic lifeline for local fishermen. Other projects include roof repairs at Al-Mahmudiah Religious School, refurbishment of the Flood Relief Centre at Sekolah Kebangsaan Temerlok, maintenance and repair works at Masjid Al-Mahmudiah, and cleaning of the mosque grounds and the nearby Muslim cemetery. Masjid Al-Mahmudiah also received two air-conditioning units, installed in its meeting room. More than 150 MMEA personnel took part in a gotong-royong (communal work) with villagers to spruce up the village, mosque, and cemetery. Mohd Rosli added that the agency also donated three cows for the Aidiladha sacrificial rites, with meat distributed to 200 residents, including senior citizens, single mothers, and underprivileged families.

MMEA: 203 people rescued in 108 search operations up to May
PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has conducted 108 search-and-rescue operations up to May this year, saving 203 out of 251 victims. MMEA director-general Admiral Maritime Datuk Mohd Rosli Abdullah said that during the same period, 36 victims lost their lives, while 12 remain missing. Sharing the 2024 statistics, he said MMEA recorded 226 cases through search and rescue operations involving 1,348 victims. 'Of the total, MMEA saved 1,259 lives, while 64 died and 25 are still missing at sea,' he said in a statement issued yesterday in conjunction with Maritime Safety Awareness Day, which has been celebrated since 2021. To enhance operational efficiency, Mohd Rosli said MMEA has developed its own standard operating procedures to ensure the effectiveness, speed and safety of every rescue operation, Bernama reported. He said the agency's responsibility to lead search-and-rescue operations in Malaysian waters, including the open sea, is stipulated under Sections 6(a) and 6(b) of the MMEA Act 2004 (Act 633), which clearly grants MMEA the mandate to lead such rescue efforts. This mandate, he added, is reinforced by National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) directive No. 1, which designates MMEA as the primary agency for maritime disasters. This authority is based on the National SAR Manual as the main reference. Mohd Rosli stressed that there is no such thing as a 'day off' for MMEA, as emergencies require immediate action regardless of time or weather. 'Assets such as patrol boats and helicopters are always on standby around the clock for deployment,' he said. Mohd Rosli said MMEA also regularly conducts search-and-rescue prevention programmes across all states and maritime zones to raise awareness of maritime safety. 'Community briefings, talks, exhibitions, brochure distribution and joint dialogues with fishermen are all part of our approach to stay connected with the maritime community,' he said.
