James Morrison makes courageous return to stage over a year after wife's death
James Morrison has returned to the spotlight for the first time since his wife's death in January 2024.
The singer-songwriter was left 'devastated' when he found his former partner, Gill Catchpole, dead at their home in Gloucestershire at the age of 45.
An inquest later concluded that she took her own life by hanging, having left a series of handwritten notes behind for her loved ones.
Morrison and Catchpole had been together since 2006 and have two daughters, Ada Rose, six, and Elsie, 16. The couple split a year before she died.
The Rugby-born musician, known for hits including Broken Strings and I Won't Let You Go, has been absent from the public eye since the news broke, but made a courageous comeback this week with a gig.
Taking to Instagram this evening, Morrison, 40, shared a series of photos of himself playing at In It Together Festival, which took place in Wales. https://www.instagram.com/p/DKH9c32M5SJ/?img_index=1
He wore a smile on his face as he sang and played guitar, the crowd going wild and holding up signs for him.
His caption read: 'It was an absolute pleasure to perform at @inittogetherfestival last night. Thank you to the wonderful crowd who welcomed me back.'
Promising that he's now here to stay, the Wonderful World hitmaker added: 'There is more excitement incoming… turn your notifications ON, sign up to my mailing list, and get ready…'
In the comments, fans were keen to send him warm wishes, with @nathanhead11 writing: 'This is the best thing I've seen/read on social media all year. Love you lad! And the world needs you rocking 💙🎉👊🏻'
@elenballet added: 'Can't wait to see you on tour again 🤩'
'This is amazing news. I've thought about you and your precious family often ❤️', wrote @jo_anna_r_.
'We've missed you!!! 💕💕💕', echoed @jujuqu.
Morrison cancelled all work commitments in the wake of his former partner's death as he grieved and focused on looking after their children.
He was seemingly gearing up to continue releasing music throughout last year, having posted on social media just days before: 'New year, new adventure…,' alongside a picture of himself sitting in a studio.
Morrison, who met Catchpole before his success, when she moved into his mother's house as a lodger, with her then-boyfriend, previously dedicated one of his records to her.
In 2019, he revealed his album You're Stronger Than You Know was inspired by his then-wife after their youngest daughter was born 13 weeks premature.
'The album title is for Gill, as she's been through so much as a woman and a mum, knowing we could lose the baby at any point,' he said at the time.
'We've been through everything together. She's been there from the start, when I had nothing, when I was just playing gigs and trying to write songs and not getting anywhere,' he added to OK! Magazine. More Trending
'She's a realist and thought I was chasing a pointless career, but she supported me.
'Without her, I don't think I'd be here. I don't think I'd be the person I am. I don't think I'd be as grounded if I hadn't met her when I was young.'
He also previously described her as his 'hero', with Catchpole's death marking another devastating loss in recent times.
In 2010, Morrison's father, Paul, died, while his brother, Alexis, and nephew, Callum, also died less than a year apart.

The Pride inclusive music festival is taking place across two days and JoJo was supposed to be headlining on Sunday June 29. But an announcement on Backlot Bash's official Instagram account today read: "Due to a scheduling conflict, JoJo Siwa will no longer be performing at Chicago's Back Lot Bash." No further information has been given by organisers and JoJo has not commented on the cancellation on her own social media accounts. In the lead up to this year's Back Lot Bash, the Bulletproof star had appeared as the main headshot on the event's promo flyers. On ticket website Do312 the festive had been billed as the '21st Annual Back Lot Bash with Jojo Siwa'. The news comes just days after Celebrity Big Brother star JoJo announced she was also postponing her American tour. The star had an 11-date run of gigs booked back home in the States in July. But during the week, JoJo - who has been practically inseparable with Chris Hughes since meeting him on CBB in April - dropped the bombshell. JoJo Siwa says she'll NEVER break up with Chris Hughes saying their relationship is 'earthquake proof' In a statement, the former Dance Moms star said: "I've got some news that breaks my heart to share... my US tour has to be postponed. "I promise I'll be back before you know it to perform for all the beautiful people in the US!... "Announcements will be coming soon, including some Europe shows!:). "Thank you so much for your understanding and support. I can't wait to see you all soon! "To my Dream Guest VIPs, my team will be reaching out to you individually to plan something special. "Refunds will be issued at point of purchase." New direction JoJo is believed to be plotting to spend more time in the UK amid her blossoming romance with former Love Island star Chris. She has also reportedly been 'dropped by Columbia Records' after they signed JoJo just one year ago. Other stars on the record label's books include Adele, Beyoncé and Harry Styles. But the dancer is no longer listed on Columbia's website, where she was previously featured. The Sun previously contacted JoJo's rep for comment following the claims about her future with the record label. In a recent interview with Hits Radio, JoJo spoke about her new music and hinted that she was going it alone. JoJo admitted she choreographed and directed the music video for her current song Bulletproof and was turning over a new leaf with "more genuine" songs. 6 JoJo has postponed her 11-date US tour Credit: Getty 6 The star is smitten with her Celebrity Big Brother co-star Chris Hughes Credit: w8media

Penny Lancaster and Rod Stewart in loved-up photos from lavish anniversary trip
Loose Women's Penny Lancaster and Rod Stewart have been in Portofino for their wedding anniversary after having travelled to the destination on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express Sir Rod Stewart and Penny Lancaster looked loved-up on their trip abroad together this week. They have embarked on a tour of locations that are special to them as the couple celebrate the 18th anniversary of their wedding. Rod, 80, and Penny, 54, got married in Portofino on the coast of Italy in 2007, with the anniversary of their nuptials having been on Monday. The pair tied the knot at former monastery La Cervara and have now returned to the area. Loose Women panelist Penny has shared updates from the trip on Instagram this week. It included posting footage yesterday from a boat trip as she spotted the cliffside property where she married Rod from the water beneath it. Penny focused on the wedding venue in the clip and referenced the recent anniversary that she celebrated with her husband in the caption that accompanied it. She told her followers in the post: "Where we said I do 18 years ago." She's since shared photos from the holiday, including one of herself and Rod cosied up together whilst holding ice cream cones. The couple were seen smiling as they stood together. She used a sticker on the post today that read: "I love you." Another photo showed them sat at a restaurant sporting clothing protectors as they eat a meal. Penny teased in the caption: "Making a mess of ourselves". The post, uploaded this afternoon, included Dean Martin 's song That's Amore. Earlier today, Penny had shared a selfie of herself from the trip and included a sticker that read: "Good morning." Later, prior to posting the photos of herself and Rod together, she shared showcased some drinks and appetizers. It comes after the couple had announced the trip away together earlier this week. Penny and Rod, in a joint post shared on Thursday, had revealed that they would travel on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express to the destination. Penny shared at the time that they were boarding the luxury train in France. She said that they would travel from Paris, which is where they got engaged in 2005, to Portofino, which is where they had got married two years later. The post included a photo of Penny and Rod posing outside one of the carriages. She was seen wearing a floral outfit on the platform, whilst her husband opted to board the train in a pink jacket, white shirt and matching trousers instead. Alongside the photo, Penny said it was a "magical" experience. She wrote: "Entering a bygone era @vsoetrain from Paris where we got engaged to Portofino where we got married 18 years ago, it's totally magical @sirrodstewart."
