Atara Biotherapeutics Provides Regulatory Updates on EBVALLO

Business Wire05-05-2025

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Atara Biotherapeutics, Inc. (Nasdaq: ATRA), a leader in T-cell immunotherapy, leveraging its novel allogeneic Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) T-cell platform to develop transformative therapies for patients with cancer and autoimmune diseases, today announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has lifted the clinical hold on Atara's active Investigational New Drug (IND) applications for the EBVALLO™ (tabelecleucel) program.
'We are very pleased to have addressed the FDA's questions, and this has enabled the FDA to lift the clinical holds,' said Cokey Nguyen Ph.D., President and Chief Executive Officer of Atara. 'We are working closely with our partner Pierre Fabre Laboratories and our clinical trial sites and anticipate resuming enrollment and treatment of patients as soon as possible.'
In January 2025, the EBVALLO™ (tabelecleucel) program was placed on clinical hold. The clinical hold was directly linked to GMP compliance issues identified during the pre-license inspection of the third-party manufacturing facility referenced in the Complete Response Letter (CRL) for EBVALLO™ that was announced on January 16, 2025.
The FDA has lifted the clinical hold on tabelecleucel after reviewing supplemental data on finished drug product. The Company is now allowed to restart the Phase 3 ALLELE clinical study for patients with Epstein-Barr Virus-associated post-transplant lymphoproliferative disease (EBV+ PTLD) and the Phase 2 label-expansion multi-cohort clinical study.
The FDA has also granted a date for a Type A meeting to discuss the plan to address the issues raised by the FDA in the CRL from January 2025, and the path forward for resubmission of the EBVALLO™ BLA.
'We are pleased that the FDA has granted our request for a Type A meeting and hope to gain clarity on the timing for resubmitting the tab-cel BLA for review by the FDA,' said Dr. Nguyen.
Corporate Update
Strategic Option Evaluation: As previously communicated, Atara engaged a well-known financial advisor to support a comprehensive process to explore and assess a range of potential strategic options for the Company. Alternatives may include, but are not limited to, an acquisition, merger, reverse merger, other business combinations, sale of assets, or other strategic transactions. We have temporarily paused this strategic option evaluation pending clarity with the FDA on timing of the resubmission of the EBVALLO™ BLA. It is possible that Atara may not pursue a strategic alternative or transaction or that any strategic alternative or transaction, if pursued, will not be completed on attractive terms, or that a strategic alternative or transaction may not ultimately be consummated.

CDC Vaccine Advisors To Vote On Thimerosal In Flu Shots. Here's What To Know About Thimerosal

ATLANTA, GA - OCTOBER 05: A podium with the logo for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ... More at the Tom Harkin Global Communications Center on October 5, 2014 in Atlanta, Georgia. (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images) The CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices is set to vote later this week on the issue of thimerosal in flu vaccines. What exactly is thimerosal and is it actually harmful for people that take vaccines containing the substance? Thimerosal is a mercury-based organic preservative that historically was put in several vaccines in low quantities in order to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria and fungi, particularly when multi-dose vials were used. Vaccines can become accidentally contaminated, as may occur with multiple needle punctures with multi-dose vials. Before the late 1990's, infants were recommended to receive three vaccines that contained thimerosal- hepatitis B, Haemophilus influenzae type b and diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis. There are no known health risks associated with thimerosal at the concentrations used in vaccines, according to the FDA. Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. disagrees. In his 2014 book, he states (as reported in Politico), 'there is a virtually unanimous scientific consensus among the hundreds of research scientists who have published peer-reviewed articles in the field that Thimerosal is immensely toxic to brain tissue.' Thimerosal, as a preservative gets metabolized as ethylmercury, which is distinct from the more toxic methylmercury. In large doses, both compounds can be toxic to the brain and kidney, resulting in tremors, memory loss, mood swings, depression, protein in the urine and kidney damage. However, ethylmercury poses a significantly decreased risk for humans because it has a much shorter half-life of less than week compared to methylmercury, which has a half-life of 1.5 months according to the World Health Organization. Ethylmercury is removed from the body fast and actively excreted into the gut, as oppose to methylmercury that can accumulate in the body and result in potential toxic effects. In 1999, because of scientific uncertainty at the time and theoretical concerns about thimerosal, the preservative was removed from nearly all childhood vaccines as a precautionary measure per the FDA, not because it was shown to cause any harm. The only childhood vaccine that still contains thimerosal in some formulations is the flu vaccine. Part of the reason thimerosal was removed from childhood vaccines was because an infant in the early 1990s receiving childhood vaccines could be exposed to a cumulative dose of mercury as high as 187.5 micrograms by the age of 6 months, which exceeded the guidelines put forth by the EPA, but not the WHO. Even at a dose of 187.5 micrograms of ethylmercury, no studies have shown adverse health effects or harm to humans, other than local skin reactions at the injection site of the vaccine, as shown in a study published in the journal Pediatrics. Despite what Secretary of HHS Kennedy has suggested, thimerosal has not been shown to cause autism. In fact both the FDA and multiple peer-reviewed scientific studies have asserted and shown no link between thimerosal use in vaccines and autism. The use of thimerosal in U.S. FDA licensed vaccines has significantly declined because of reformulations and the availability of vaccines in single-dose containers. Currently, a couple of flu vaccines are formulated to contain thimerosal, although the majority of flu vaccines that currently exist do not contain thimerosal. The ACIP will convene later this week to hold a vote on the status of thimerosal on vaccines. Even if completely removed from the flu vaccine, the vaccine will not 'become' safer, as decades of research has already shown thimerosal to be safe and effective as a preservative. Experts warn that holding the vote could cast doubt on vaccine uptake. Dr. Jeremy Faust, Editor-in-Chief of MedPage Today, writes, 'Elevating this debunked myth to national policy lends credence to misinformation, and sets the stage for other actions that may undermine vaccine confidence in the United States.'

National CineMedia (NASDAQ:NCMI) investors are sitting on a loss of 79% if they invested five years ago

Some stocks are best avoided. We really hate to see fellow investors lose their hard-earned money. Anyone who held National CineMedia, Inc. (NASDAQ:NCMI) for five years would be nursing their metaphorical wounds since the share price dropped 83% in that time. Furthermore, it's down 11% in about a quarter. That's not much fun for holders. While a drop like that is definitely a body blow, money isn't as important as health and happiness. Since shareholders are down over the longer term, lets look at the underlying fundamentals over the that time and see if they've been consistent with returns. This technology could replace computers: discover the 20 stocks are working to make quantum computing a reality. Because National CineMedia made a loss in the last twelve months, we think the market is probably more focussed on revenue and revenue growth, at least for now. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. That's because fast revenue growth can be easily extrapolated to forecast profits, often of considerable size. Over five years, National CineMedia grew its revenue at 1.6% per year. That's not a very high growth rate considering it doesn't make profits. Nonetheless, it's fair to say the rapidly declining share price (down 13%, compound, over five years) suggests the market is very disappointed with this level of growth. We'd be pretty cautious about this one, although the sell-off may be too severe. We'd recommend focussing any further research on the likelihood of profitability in the foreseeable future, given the muted revenue growth. You can see below how earnings and revenue have changed over time (discover the exact values by clicking on the image). You can see how its balance sheet has strengthened (or weakened) over time in this free interactive graphic. It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, National CineMedia's TSR for the last 5 years was -79%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. And there's no prize for guessing that the dividend payments largely explain the divergence! We're pleased to report that National CineMedia shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 19% over one year. That's including the dividend. There's no doubt those recent returns are much better than the TSR loss of 12% per year over five years. This makes us a little wary, but the business might have turned around its fortunes. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 1 warning sign with National CineMedia , and understanding them should be part of your investment process. York Water (NASDAQ:YORW) shareholders have endured a 26% loss from investing in the stock five years ago

The main aim of stock picking is to find the market-beating stocks. But every investor is virtually certain to have both over-performing and under-performing stocks. So we wouldn't blame long term The York Water Company (NASDAQ:YORW) shareholders for doubting their decision to hold, with the stock down 33% over a half decade. Now let's have a look at the company's fundamentals, and see if the long term shareholder return has matched the performance of the underlying business. AI is about to change healthcare. These 20 stocks are working on everything from early diagnostics to drug discovery. The best part - they are all under $10bn in marketcap - there is still time to get in early. In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One imperfect but simple way to consider how the market perception of a company has shifted is to compare the change in the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price movement. During the unfortunate half decade during which the share price slipped, York Water actually saw its earnings per share (EPS) improve by 2.6% per year. Given the share price reaction, one might suspect that EPS is not a good guide to the business performance during the period (perhaps due to a one-off loss or gain). Alternatively, growth expectations may have been unreasonable in the past. By glancing at these numbers, we'd posit that the the market had expectations of much higher growth, five years ago. Having said that, we might get a better idea of what's going on with the stock by looking at other metrics. Revenue is actually up 8.6% over the time period. A more detailed examination of the revenue and earnings may or may not explain why the share price languishes; there could be an opportunity. The graphic below depicts how earnings and revenue have changed over time (unveil the exact values by clicking on the image). It's probably worth noting that the CEO is paid less than the median at similar sized companies. It's always worth keeping an eye on CEO pay, but a more important question is whether the company will grow earnings throughout the years. So it makes a lot of sense to check out what analysts think York Water will earn in the future (free profit forecasts). When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. In the case of York Water, it has a TSR of -26% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments! Investors in York Water had a tough year, with a total loss of 9.3% (including dividends), against a market gain of about 12%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Regrettably, last year's performance caps off a bad run, with the shareholders facing a total loss of 5% per year over five years. Generally speaking long term share price weakness can be a bad sign, though contrarian investors might want to research the stock in hope of a turnaround. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important. Take risks, for example - York Water has 2 warning signs (and 1 which is significant) we think you should know about. If you are like me, then you will not want to miss this free list of undervalued small caps that insiders are buying.
