Two dead in car-lorry crash on Kuantan-Maran road

KUANTAN: Two people were killed and two others injured in a collision involving a car and a trailer lorry on Jalan Kuantan-Maran highway on Saturday afternoon (June 14).
The crash, which occurred at Batu 12 around 3.30pm, was believed to have happened when the lorry, travelling from Johor towards Kuantan, lost control and swerved into oncoming traffic before colliding with a Sedan.
Kuantan OCPD Asst Comm Wan Mohd Zahari Wan Busu said Norihan Mustafa, 57, a passenger in the back seat of the car, died at the scene.
The lorry driver, 24-year-old Jayavarman Murugan, was taken to Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital but later died in the emergency ward.
The car, which was heading towards Maran from Kuantan, was carrying three people. The driver, Mohd Ridzwan Ab Mubin, 59, sustained injuries to his face and shoulder, while another passenger escaped with minor injuries.
Both vehicles are being inspected by the Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre (Puspakom), and the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which covers dangerous driving causing death.
The injured survivors are being treated at the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital. – Bernama

Penang cops round up 46 foreign workers for rioting at hostel

BUKIT MERTAJAM: Police detained 46 foreign men following a disturbance at the grounds of a workers' hostel here Friday (June 20) night. Seberang Perai Tengah OCPD Asst Comm Helmi Aris said his station received information from the public at 10.42pm, claiming that a group of foreign workers were causing a ruckus in the compound of the building that was once a hotel. "Initial investigations show that the building was used as a workers' hostel by a company located in the Bukit Minyak Industrial area, with rules prohibiting workers from smoking or consuming alcohol at the dormitory. "The commotion arose after workers were dissatisfied with the hostel warden, also a foreign national, for collecting fines from workers who violated the rules without the company's knowledge," he said in a statement Saturday (June 21). Helmi said the unilateral action led to several workers staying in the hostel to damage the company's van in front of the building. The suspects have been remanded for four days until June 24 for further investigation under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting with weapons or dangerous objects. Retiree loses over RM500,000 in fake investment scam

JOHOR BARU: A 57-year-old retiree has lost more than RM500,000 after falling victim to a fake investment scheme advertised on social media. Seri Alam OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said the man, who previously worked in the private sector, came across an online advertisement on Facebook in March and decided to click on it. 'The victim was enticed by the promise of high returns in a short period. Believing he was investing in the scheme, he deposited a total of RM535,766 into five different bank accounts from March 13 to June 5,' he said in a statement on Saturday (June 21). ACP Mohd Sohaimi said the retiree conducted a total of 26 bank transactions. 'He realised something was wrong when he was asked to transfer more funds to cash out his profits,' he said, adding that the victim lodged a police report on Tuesday (June 17). 'The public are reminded to check unknown bank account numbers using the police's SemakMule portal because early investigations revealed that the five bank accounts involved in this case were linked to 22 other investment scam cases,' he said. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, and action will also be taken against those who allow others to use their bank accounts as mule accounts.
