Marine cops seize smuggled cigarettes, liquor worth RM5mil in Sibu

SIBU: Sarawak Region 5 Marine Police Force (PPM) foiled an attempt to smuggle untaxed cigarettes and liquor worth RM5.05mil in an operation near Jalan KM16 Sibu-Bintulu on Sunday.
Acting commander Supt Rusdin Banin said the seizure was made at 5.35pm through Ops Taring Landai, following a public tip-off.
"A team from PPM Sibu detained a white-and-green cargo lorry parked on the roadside. An inspection found a load of cigarettes and liquor suspected to be untaxed and without valid documentation,' he said in a statement Tuesday (June 16).
He said the lorry driver was arrested and the case was handed over to the Criminal Investigation Division of the Sibu District Police Headquarters for further action under the Customs Act 1967.
Rusdin added that police welcome information from the public to combat smuggling activities.
From January to June 15 this year, PPM Region 5 conducted 84 raids in Sarawak, resulting in 94 arrests for offences such as smuggling of untaxed goods, subsidised controlled items and wildlife, as well as illegal entry of foreign nationals.
"Total value of seizures during the period was estimated at RM77.33mil,' he said.
Under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967, individuals found in possession of, storing or concealing prohibited goods without approval face a fine of up to RM500,000, imprisonment of up to five years, or both, upon conviction. - Bernama

TELUK INTAN: Police are intensifying efforts to locate three masked men involved in a robbery at an entertainment outlet here, which left two patrons injured. Hilir Perak district police chief, Assistant Commissioner Dr Bakri Zainal Abidin said the incident which occurred on June 15, has gone viral on social media. He said police received a report from a 42-year-old local man working as a security guard at the entertainment premises located on Jalan Changkat Jong at 1.02am on June 15. "The man reported that three masked male suspects, armed with parang and arriving in a Honda vehicle with its licence plates removed, stormed into the premises. "They damaged property inside the premises and stole an iPhone 14 Pro belonging to an employee, along with RM2,000 in cash from the counter," he said in a statement. He added that the suspects also smashed the windows of four vehicles belonging to customers and injured two patrons using parang, both inside and outside the premises. "Initial investigations successfully identified one of the suspects as a 37-year-old local man with a prior criminal record. This suspect has now been placed on the wanted list. "The forensic unit from the Perak Police Headquarters visited the scene and found several pieces of evidence, including traces of blood, two fingerprints, and glass shards. "CCTV footage has also been obtained from the location to assist in the ongoing investigation," he added. The case is being investigated under Section 395/397 of the Penal Code for gang robbery using weapons, and under Section 427 of the Penal Code for mischief causing damage to property. If convicted, the accused could face imprisonment of up to 20 years, along with fines and caning. Bakri said police are actively conducting investigations, and efforts to track down all involved suspects are being intensified. "Members of the public with any information are urged to come forward and assist in the investigation by contacting the Hilir Perak Police Station or any nearby police station," he said.

Police hunt for masked men armed with machetes after violent incident in Changkat Jong

IPOH: Police are seeking three masked men armed with machetes, who were seen in a viral video. They were suspected of causing injuries to patrons, damaging items, stealing money and vandalising cars at an entertainment outlet in Changkat Jong near Teluk Intan. 'Additionally, the suspects smashed the windows of four vehicles belonging to customer, and injuring two patrons using machetes both inside and outside the premises,' he said in a statement on Saturday (June 21). ACP Bakri stated that initial investigations have successfully identified one of the suspects as a 37-year-old local man with a criminal record. He said the forensic unit from the Perak Contingent Police Headquarters visited the crime scene and recovered several pieces of evidence, including bloodstains, two fingerprints and shards of glass. CCTV footage from the location has also been obtained. 'The case is being investigated under Section 395/397 of the Penal Code for gang robbery with weapons, and Section 427 of the Penal Code for mischief causing damage to public property. Retiree loses over RM530,000 to Facebook investment scam

JOHOR BAHRU: A private sector retiree lost RM535,766 after allegedly falling victim to an online investment scam promoted via an advertisement on the Facebook application. Seri Alam District Police chief ACP Mohd Sohaimi Ishak said the police received a report from a 57-year-old local man on Tuesday, who claimed losses exceeding RM500,000. He said the victim had come across a share investment advertisement on Facebook on March 13 that promised lucrative returns within a short time, and clicked on the provided link out of interest. 'Subsequently, the victim made 26 payment transactions into five different bank accounts between March 13 and June 5, totalling RM535,766. The victim was also asked to make additional payments to withdraw the so-called 'investment profits', but those requests were never fulfilled,' he said in a statement today. Mohd Sohaimi said the victim only realised he had been duped after repeated attempts to recover the investment funds proved futile. 'Preliminary checks via the CCID's 'Semak Mule' platform found that all five accounts involved had a total of 22 police reports linked to investment scams,' he said. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, and police are also looking into the possible involvement of mule account holders.
