Looking back over the last 25 years, the Pittsburgh Steelers have had so many great players, it's hard to narrow down the best. But ESPN undertook the daunting task of doing it for the entire league and put together their All Quarter Century teams for offense and defense.
They named one Steeler legend on each side of the football to the team. On offense, Alan Faneca made it as one of two left guards. He shared the distinction with Steven Hutchinson. Here's what they had to say about Faneca.
A stalwart at left guard for the Steelers before late-career spells with the Jets and Cardinals, Faneca missed only one game from 2000 on -- and that was due to rest in a meaningless Week 17 contest in 2001. His six first-team All-Pro selections are more than any other left guard this quarter century.
Moving to defense, edge defender T.J. Watt got snubbed but safety Troy Polamalu was there as the team's strong safety. He joined Ed Reed, Brian Dawkins and Earl Thomas as the four safeties. This was how they broke down Polamalu's career.
Polamalu flying all over the field epitomized what NFL teams began prioritizing with modern safeties. He is fifth among safeties with 103 passes defensed since 2000. He also had 80 run stops (tackles to stop runs short of a successful play), which is third among all defensive backs since 2000.

OK, maybe that is a bit harsh. But amid questions about how the QB might get along with offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, former Steelers star Merril Hoge offered up the question ... Advertisement And the answer. And away we go ... Before signing here, Rodgers claimed he wasn't "holding anybody hostage.'' ... even though he was. Somehow, the four-time MVP accumulated that power then. And he's using it now, as his new team works to customize its offense to fit his legendary (if fading) skill set. After ending a three-month wait by signing a one-year contract, Rodgers is being allowed to put his hands on the steering wheel. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin, offensive coordinator Arthur Smith and Rodgers have all been in communication about changing the team's offense to fit the new QB. And Hoge is buying it. "When you have a guy like Aaron Rodgers, I personally believe it's insanity not to give the reins and trust the guy who's inside those white lines, who understands and feels the game, knows the game and is gonna get us in the best possible position." Factually, though, Rodgers being allowed to "help run the New York Jets'' didn't work over the span of his two seasons there. he did as he wishes, skipped work when it fit him, pushed for buddies to be signed to the roster ... And ultimately was more part of the problem rather than the solution during an awful 5-12 season that got him kicked to the curb of free agency. Advertisement It will be a big for the Steelers - the only team that really bid on him - as they work to transform an offense built around 2024 quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Justin Fields. Fields, in particular, can move. The 41-year-old pocket passer Rodgers? Not so much, as last season he was sacked 40 times. Does Tomlin fix all of that? Does Smith? A stunning development has surfaced this week that links the two most newsworthy moves of the NFL offseason - both of which involved the Pittsburgh Steelers. Advertisement Pittsburgh, shortly after trading for and singing DK Metcalf, called it quits with top receiver George Pickens by trading him to the Dallas Cowboys for draft compensation. Then, free agent quarterback Aaron Rodgers made it official that he would, as many expected, be signing with Pittsburgh for his 21st season in the league. Now reports are saying the first move was made in preparation for the next one. According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, the Steelers felt pressured to trade Pickens with Rodgers and potential locker room tension in mind. 'The Steelers moved on from Pickens for a few reasons,' Fowler writes. 'His maturity issues were well-known within Pittsburgh's locker room and front office. So, the Steelers made the evaluation that Pickens and Rodgers probably would not hit it off.' Advertisement Pickens' history of on-field fights and tardy attendance to team functions have been well documented. He may be just 24 years old, but the character concerns were real, and Mike Tomlin, among the sternest head coaches around, had had enough. But now here comes Rodgers, who may not be the easiest guy to get along with, either. Will Rodgers be an "upgrade" in maturity? Certainly, but that doesn't eliminate all of the drama that has seemed to follow Rodgers with greater intensity as of late. Would Pickens and Rodgers have meshed? Probably not, but that's all an assumption. Pickens is entering a contract year, and all indications show that he's on the straight and narrow in Dallas so far. Rodgers likely knows he's near the end of the road, so maybe he could clean up his frequent controversies and attention-seeking ploys in search of a successful last ride. Advertisement Or not. That forces the Steelers to have to pick between the two. While it's unclear whether Rodgers demanded Pickens be moved before he signs, that could be a plausible story here also. If you're into conspiracies - like Rodgers - maybe that's an explanation of the move. Realistically, the move to favor the quarterback should offer enough to be justified. Pittsburgh had swung and missed on any quarterback options to this point, and having just locked down Metcalf, they valued a future Hall of Famer under center more than a young receiver prospect who isn't even as proven as his replacement. There's a strong possibility that these moves - however much they have to do with one another - could still pay major dividends to both franchises. Advertisement Dallas finds an electric receiver to relieve pressure from All-Pro centerpiece CeeDee Lamb, and Pittsburgh finds the best quarterback option available at a team-friendly price.
