BBC announces new writing team for Ncuti Gatwa's second series of Doctor Who
A new team of writers has been announced for the second series of Doctor Who starring Ncuti Gatwa.
In his first series as the time-travelling alien, Sex Education star Gatwa, 32, explored the universe with new companion Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson) in episodes written by showrunner Russell T Davies and others.
Among the new group of writers is This Book Is Gay author Juno Dawson, who created the first official Doctor Who-scripted podcast, and Pete McTighe, who is a writer and executive producer for forthcoming spin-off The War Between The Land And The Sea.
McTighe also wrote Doctor Who episode Kerblam! while Chris Chibnall was at the helm.
McTighe said: 'The Tardis is my home away from home, so it's been a joy to step back inside, with Russell at the console and the incredible team at Bad Wolf hanging on for dear life.
'I love this show with all my heart, and am really proud of what we've been able to achieve with my next episode.'
Dawson said: 'I started watching Doctor Who with my grandma when I was 10 years old in the 1990s.
'From writing fan fiction for an audience of one to scripting the best TV show of all time is truly a dream come true. I can't wait for fans and newcomers to see the new season.'
Screenwriter Sharma Angel-Walfall and writer and curator Inua Ellams have also written for the forthcoming series.
Angel-Walfall said: 'I am buzzing to be a part of such an iconic show.
'I am a massive Russell T Davies fan, so it is a dream come true to be able to work alongside him, especially on a show that I love.
'It's a real privilege to be a part of the Doctor Who family. I have loved every minute.'
Ellams added: 'For as long as I can remember television, I've been a Doctor Who fan. I started watching when I was 10 in Nigeria.
'The show invited me to dream, to live beyond my reality. Getting to write for the show felt like touching God; it was blasphemously humbling and exciting, and I can't wait to share my story with the world.'
Davies said: 'Doctor Who takes its talent from a glittering galaxy of names, and these extraordinary writers span the skies.
'We've got old hands, new stars, voices from theatre, radio and literature, the whole works. It's the most wild and exciting season of Doctor Who yet, and I can't wait to unleash their brilliant work.'
Gatwa's first series as the Time Lord premiered on May 11 last year with a double bill.
The Christmas Day episode saw him star alongside Bridgerton actress Nicola Coughlan.

‘The Buccaneers' Season 2 Crushes Bridgerton's Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score
The Buccaneers Apple TV+ has a record of producing very impressive shows despite its not very impressive reach, and it has developed what could be a considered a direct competitor to Netflix's Bridgerton, one of that service's biggest series. That would be The Buccaneers, also adapted from a book, albeit one that was originally written in 1938. The modern adaptation makes it very modern in tone, similar to most of Bridgerton and fans? Well, even if it's a smaller group, they seem to like it a whole lot better. The Buccaneers has returned for season 2 and has maintained a stellar audience score that Bridgerton's three seasons simply cannot match. Here's how the five seasons of the two shows compare: The Buccanners So, Bridgerton does have a higher critic score, but as it stands, The Buccaneers has an audience score that's about 20% higher and has maintained that season to season. Of course, in terms of popularity, there's no real contest. Bridgerton season 1 is the fifth most-watched English language series in Netflix history. Season 3 is the seventh most-watched. It's harder to get Apple TV+ numbers, but I don't believe The Buccaneers is that high. Some even predicted it would be cancelled after season 1 but clearly that did not happen, much to the appreciation of fans. Will this continue with Bridgerton season 4? Well, we will find out in…a very long time, it turns out. It's just been announced that Bridgerton season 4 is done filming, but the timeline suggests that the series will not be out until around September 2026, nearly two and a half years after season 3. Maybe closer to two if there aren't any strikes this time. The Buccaneers, in contrast, at least had closer to a year and a half gap, which is 'short' in the current context of the industry. Given that The Buccaneers is moving past source material soon enough, we will see if it actually returns for season 3, given its viewership. Despite airing a new season, it's only fourth on Apple's Top 10 list, behind Stick, Murderbot and Your Friends and Neighbors, the last of which ended a bit ago. We'll see what Apple decides to do in the next few weeks or months, and it may want to keep going, given how well the series has been received by fans. 'Bridgerton' season 4 in production: See 1st photos of Luke Thompson and Yerin Ha "The fourth season of Bridgerton turns its focus to bohemian second son Benedict," the season's official synopsis reads.
