What's Up with the Wagon Market in the U.S.?

The U.S. wagon market peaked in the mid-Seventies, when dozens of offerings flooded the category and these middle-class suburban schleppers accounted for 10 percent of new-car sales. In subsequent decades, however, new automotive forms—the minivan, then the SUV—found favor as family haulers, and the longroof's popularity plummeted. It is now at its nadir. In the past five years, wagon sales have flatlined, hovering at just over 1 percent of the U.S. market, and nearly all of that is the Subaru Outback. What about the sport/luxury wagons that we love?
'That's been right around 0.2 percent,' says Alexander Edwards, president of Strategic Vision, a research and consulting firm. 'It's an insignificant part of the market. But even 0.2 percent of 16 million sales is 32,000 cars.' Enough to keep some manufacturers interested, if capriciously.
At the low end of this category, in 2019, Volkswagen discontinued its Golf Alltrack and Golf SportWagen models. After 2023, Mercedes offered its long-running E-class wagon solely in jacked-up 4Matic All-Terrain guise, no longer sending the U.S. the robust AMG E63 iteration. Volvo, which is defined in this country by its wagons, similarly just canceled its V60 T8 Polestar Engineered wagon, offering the States this mid-sizer, and the larger V90, only in lifted Cross Country form.
Meanwhile, BMW has decided to bring its racy, $122,000 M5 Touring to the U.S. for the first time while denying Americans any other 5-series (or 3-series) estates. This echoes Audi's likely strategy shifts. While Audi currently offers its Avant in compelling hot-rod RS6 guise at nearly $128,000, the recently announced replacement of the A4 with the A5 hatchback seems likely to kill off the A4 Allroad wagon here, and the automaker has hinted that the U.S. won't receive the handsome standard next-gen A6 wagon either. Likewise, Porsche has purged American variants of its gas-powered Panamera Sport Turismo wagon while maintaining a half-dozen versions of its electric Taycan Cross Turismo.
Why all of this movement? Well, the pie slice available is minuscule, so automakers battle to cross-section it as best as possible. 'They're trying to use whatever they have to outmaneuver the competition,' says Brian Moody, an analyst at Cox Automotive. 'So if they can offer one little advantage to the buyer, they'll try that. And if that doesn't work, they shift and try something else.'
For BMW and Audi, the decision to lead with boss wagons is predicated on consumer demand. 'We received literally thousands of inquiries from customers asking us to bring the RS6 Avant to the U.S., as the predecessor was not offered in our market,' an Audi spokesperson says. A BMW spokesperson echoes this reasoning: 'We've had an outpouring of customer enthusiasm for high-performance wagons here since the launch of the M3 Touring in other markets.'
These German archrivals also disdain ceding sales to each other, no matter how niche. 'Frankly, we were the creators of the performance-wagon segment with the 1994 RS2, and we have offered RS4, S4, RS6, and S6 Avants over the years,' the Audi spokesperson says, throwing impressive shade. 'So we were ahead of all the competitors.'
Mercedes and Porsche spokespeople both cited diminished market returns from the performance-wagon subsegment as the reason for their departure. But Volvo, which has perhaps the most complex brand relationship with high performance here, seems conflicted about abdicating. The automaker's CEO recently said there's a possibility its future won't have any wagons at all. That doesn't mean all love is gone for its long-roofed models, though.
'There's always been a small group of discerning enthusiasts who also appreciate something rare, unique, and maybe even unexpected,' a Volvo spokesperson says. 'From a volume perspective, a V60 T8 Polestar Engineered is more exclusive than many exotics.'
This sentiment aligns with Strategic Vision's data, which cites these wagons' exclusivity as key to their appeal. 'The thing luxury-wagon buyers want most from their vehicle is a sense of individuality, something that makes them stand apart,' Edwards says. 'A wagon is like a convertible. It's 'I've got a vehicle that nobody else has.''
Yet these vehicles are stealthier than a drop-top. 'They offer great dynamics with exceptional functionality that allows customers to stand out without screaming 'Look at me,'' the Audi spokesperson says. Edwards's findings corroborate this. 'Owners believe these luxury wagons are significantly more refined,' he says, than offerings in other high-performance and exclusive vehicle categories.
Wagon buyers are, not surprisingly, a particular lot. According to Edwards's data, they're 12 percent younger than the average luxury-vehicle buyer. They're 44 percent more likely to identify as Democrats. And they are significantly more likely to live on the coasts. Audi and Mercedes note that of their entire customer base, these owners have some of the highest household incomes, and they are among the most loyal and passionate as well. 'It's such a weird group,' Edwards says, in sum.
So what's the prognosis here for wagons? It's anyone's guess. Volvo's rep hints at shapes that defy categorization. 'As technology evolves,' he says, 'we are confident there will be new styles and approaches that will quickly become as iconic as the wagon.' And against expectations, Audi, Porsche, and Mercedes all suggest that we may see the category diversify, especially given the upcoming electrification offensive. 'Given the handling, aero, range, and other advantages, maybe it's time for the Avant to make a comeback,' the Audi spokesperson says.
Edwards is not so certain. 'My guess is that market share for these vehicles will shrink in 2025 as OEMs offer more unique options,' he says. 'So, consumers who want to express their individuality can do so in other ways—with electrification and other features out there.'
This raises the question of why these automakers send wagons here at all.
'There is still a global marketplace where some of these platforms have some relevance,' Edwards says. 'The Germans and Swedes have always been more interested in wagons. It's part of who they are. So, not doing a wagon seems counterproductive for what they think they represent.' He pauses. 'The real answer is, frankly, hubris.'

What If Ford Revived The Flex As A Maverick-Based Compact 7-Seater?

Years ago, Ford offered the Flex–a unique, box-shaped seven-seater that was either a station wagon, an SUV, or a minivan, depending on who you asked. Sharing its platform with the Ford Taurus, the Flex offered buyers an affordable option for a seven-seater family car that wasn't a massive, gas-guzzling, body-on-frame off-roader. Despite occupying a niche segment, the Ford Flex proved to be relatively popular, selling over 300,000 units during its 11-year production run. Even with consistent year-over-year sales figures, Ford decided to discontinue the full-size crossover after its 2019 model year with no direct replacement. These days, it's incredibly difficult to find a seven-seater vehicle capable of hauling a large family, along with their luggage and some trinkets, that isn't either an expensive, less-than-attractive minivan or a gargantuan SUV. One example that does spring to mind is the Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class, which offers the seating capacity and aesthetics of the much larger GLS-Class, without the massive proportions and eye-watering price tag. If Ford were to revive the Flex, perhaps taking on a similar approach to the GLB-Class could be a fitting, modern take on the original Flex. By downsizing the model and optimizing the Ford Maverick compact pickup truck platform to accommodate a third row of seating, Ford could offer North American buyers a budget-friendly alternative to the more luxurious and more pricey Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class. Perhaps a performance variant akin to the Mercedes-AMG GLB 35, based on the Ford Maverick Lobo street truck, could make an appearance in the Ford Flex model lineup as well. Considering the Ford Maverick is roughly 2 feet longer than the Bronco Sport it shares its platform with, the Maverick offers an excellent foundation for a compact seven-seater SUV. The third row of seats could sit where the pickup truck bed would otherwise be found, with the ability to stow them away for bountiful cargo space. Keeping things frugal, the revived Ford Flex could share the same powertrain options as the Maverick pickup, including a 191-horsepower 2.5-liter hybrid four-cylinder engine. For buyers who want a bit more pep in their step and the added confidence of all-wheel drive, the 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder that produces 250 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque could make for an excellent optional upgrade. Trim levels could mirror those of the Maverick as well, including a sub-$30,000 base model XL trim, the mid-level XLT trim, and the well-equipped Lariat. For those who desire a bit more uniqueness, the Lobo package could offer a standard EcoBoost engine, sport-tuned suspension, tweaked steering and brakes, and cosmetic enhancements such as rally-inspired 19-inch alloy wheels and a unique grille, just like the Ford Maverick Lobo. A premium, off-road-focused Tremor package could pair the same standard 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine with an off-road-tuned suspension, a locking rear differential pulled from the Bronco Sport Badlands, and chunkier all-terrain tires. Compact yet spacious 7-seaters have come and gone from the North American market. Examples such as the Mazda5, the seven-seater variant of the Volkswagen Tiguan, and the Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class have offered plenty of families all the seating they need in a vehicle without the unnecessary cost and burden of a much larger SUV. For some reason, however, many of these vehicles seem to have disappeared from the North American market altogether. Now, the resurgence of compact pickup trucks that blend basic utility with compact convenience may offer manufacturers the opportunity to create family-focused variants that leverage their longer wheelbases compared to their crossover SUV alternatives. Based on the foundations of the Maverick pickup truck, a revived Ford Flex could serve as Ford's entry-level seven-seater family crossover. With frugal hybrid powertrains, street performance variants, and an off-road-focused Tremor package, an updated Ford Flex would surely earn its keep within Ford's model lineup in no time. Although this idea is purely hypothetical for now, it wouldn't surprise us if Ford decided to create new models using the same platform shared between the Maverick, the Bronco Sport, and the Escape, that are purpose-built to attract more specific buyers, such as families looking for affordable seven-seater utility, or perhaps even a small delivery van. For the time being, though, families looking for a smaller way to get their hands on three rows of seating will have to look towards the capable and practical Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class. The US military relied on two of its most elusive and secretive combat platforms to carry out strikes on Iran's top nuclear facilities, a top general revealed Sunday. Gen. Dan Caine, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said on Sunday that seven US Air Force B-2 Spirit stealth bombers dropped 14 heavy bunker-buster bombs on the facilities as part of a secret, highly complex operation the previous night. The flying-wing B-2, built by US aerospace company Northrop Grumman, features a unique low-observable stealth design that gives it the ability to penetrate enemy airspace heavily defended by surface-to-air missiles without being spotted. Caine told reporters that a US Navy guided-missile submarine also launched more than two dozen Tomahawk cruise missiles from an undisclosed location in the Middle East at Iranian targets. Caine didn't specify what type of submarine was involved in the mission against Iran. The Pentagon declined to disclose the name of the submarine that participated in the operation, and the Navy referred Business Insider to the White House, which did not immediately respond. Guided-missile submarine generally refers to the Navy's Ohio-class SSGNs, which can carry more than 150 BGM-109 Tomahawk Land Attack Missiles, subsonic jet-powered munitions that can be launched from the sea to strike targets over 1,000 miles away. General Dynamics Electric Boat builds the Navy's Ohio-class submarines. These stealthy undersea assets are made with streamlined hulls and quiet propulsion systems, among other technologies, for evading detection. The Ohios, however, are not the only US subs capable of launching Tomahawk missiles. The US military does not typically disclose details of its secretive missile subs, except when it is trying to send a message to adversaries and signal deterrence. President Donald Trump announced Saturday that the US had bombed the Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan nuclear facilities in what he said was a "spectacular military success" that "completely and totally obliterated" Iran's key enrichment facilities. Beyond the B-2s and the lone submarine, Caine said the operation, called Midnight Hammer, also involved dozens of fighter jets and aerial refueling tankers. He said US forces used 75 precision-guided weapons against Iranian targets. The B-2s dropped 14 bunker-buster bombs — specifically, the GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrator, or MOP, developed by the Air Force Research Laboratory in partnership with Boeing. The big 15-ton weapon is the US military's largest non-nuclear bomb and is regarded as the bomb best suited for hitting Iran's more protected nuclear facilities. The B-2 is the only operational aircraft that can carry the heavy MOP, though the new B-21 Raider will be able to as well. The Spirit can carry two of these munitions. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said the strikes "devastated the Iranian nuclear program." The operation comes as Israeli forces have pounded Iran with relentless strikes over the past 10 days, with fighter jets targeting the country's nuclear program and military capabilities, including air defenses and missile launchers. Tehran has retaliated by launching hundreds of missiles and drones at Israel. Trump, over the past few days, had been weighing whether to join Israel in its bombing campaign. His administration has been tied up in efforts to reach a new nuclear deal with Iran, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has preferred a military approach. He later praised Trump for the US strikes. The US involvement is an escalation in the conflict that could see Iran retaliate against US forces in the Middle East. The Pentagon has a large presence across the region, including warships, aircraft carriers, fighter jets, and ground troops that it says is intended to protect US interests. The president and Pentagon leadership is urging Iran to pursue peace and threatening continued attacks if they do not. It remains to be seen how Iran responds.

2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N Review: A Racing Sim You Can Drive on the Road

The latest car news, reviews, and features. It's easy to go gaga over the 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 5 N on a short backroad blast or rip around a track. It's mind-blowingly fast and, more impressively, a genuinely unique driving experience. Though I have to admit, I never completely got over the inherent goofiness of fake manual shifting and the video-game interface. I understand why people love this car, but I wasn't sad when my weeklong test came to a close. A curb weight of 4,861 pounds is a lot—but so is an output of 601 horsepower, which can spike to 641 hp with the 10-second N Grin Boost button. The torque figure of 545 lb-ft also increases to 568 when that button is pushed. Hyundai says the Ioniq 5 N can do a zero-to-60-mph run in 3.25 seconds at maximum attack, but MotorTrend recorded an even more dizzying 2.8-second pull and ran the quarter-mile in 11 seconds flat. In a mass-produced car that can also carry four people and a dog comfortably? That's crazy talk—but it's real. Andrew P. Collins The 5 N's specs, grip, responsiveness, and real-time customizability have been discussed ad nauseam on podcasts, in reviews, and here on The Drive . It looks great and loads a lot of cargo because, as you've also probably read, while it may have the shape of an '80s rally car, it's got the footprint of a crossover. Four adults can easily fit, plus luggage. The $70,000 list price is justified, too. A BMW X3 M50 is about the same money, and while that may feel fancier, the Hyundai is far, far quicker. At least, until it runs out of juice, which does happen annoyingly soon. Hyundai's official max range estimate for this car is 221 miles; expect a bit less if you drive as hard as the car invites you to. Former The Drive staff writer Chris Rosales (now at Motor1 ) called out the weak driving range as the 5 N's 'one major flaw,' and yeah, it does make a long day of adventuring less free-wheeling. Where he's at, at the north end of Angeles Crest Highway in California, you could easily rack up 200 miles bombing canyons. Similar story here in rural New York, where I do my relaxation driving—I can put 100 miles on a car just doing weekend errands. This checker-stripe appears all over the place. But as you can see by the scratches in the door card, the car's not made of the most elite materials. Seating materials, however, felt excellent. Rear cargo room is bountiful—this is an SUV, after all. Door handles tuck away when you put the car in drive. The interior door arm rests kind of float on some backlighting. Here's another perspective on that interesting floating interior door trim design. Not much to see under the hood, but at least the motor cover has some decoration on it. This has to be one of the most creative reflector designs on any car right now. When you do need a charge, the car's supposed to be able to go from 10% to 80% in 18 minutes if you can connect to a 350 kW DC fast charger. A 50 kW DC charger should be able to do it in one hour and 10 minutes. Charging the car to max from 10% on a 240-volt outlet at 10.9 kW would take 7 hours and 20 minutes—even that's not terrible as long as you can just have it plugged in overnight. The cockpit layout is tidy but not aggressively minimalist, and the sporty seats are taut and supportive. It can be driven in near-silence, but the Ioniq 5 N has no chill. It wants to party. It wants to be driven hard. It might even be too stiff to be practical in some regions. Rough roads felt extremely unforgiving to me, and there are a whole lot of those in the Hudson Valley. Andrew P. Collins I'm not saying the car should be softer. On the contrary, the ride felt very well matched to the vehicle's vibe and intentions. And while it punishes you in potholes, it does reward you with a good feel for where the car is below you. Arguably, the 5 N's best party trick is its customizability. As our former reviews editor Chris Tsui wrote wrote last year after his drive at Laguna Seca: 'Eleven driver-selectable, fully variable levels of front-rear torque output mean Ioniq 5 N can go from fully FWD to fully RWD (70 rear, 30 front is the default), while an electronic limited-slip differential and 'N Drift Optimizer' function can simulate a clutch-kick to make smoky slides easier.' I was completely blown away by that idea when I first read about it. Now having now driven it on public roads for an extended period of time, I have some salient thoughts. If you're a car nerd, you can amuse yourself for hours running the same loop, trying it with different power distribution. You'll be able to enjoy and appreciate it at socially acceptable speeds, too. The sliding, I have to admit, I simply could not find a place that seemed safe enough to drift. This brings me to another key factor in what this car's like to drive: You really need to treat it with respect. You can sneeze on the accelerator and warp into the next zip code. An EV that's idling? It's not really, but it's a weirdly impressive imitation. The other images here are just to give you a sense of how deep you can go in the car's customization menu. If you like to tinker with settings, you're going to love this car. Andrew P. Collins But I'm happy to confirm that, unlike with some modern performance vehicles, you don't need to drive this thing like you're in a Mission: Impossible movie to enjoy it. Lastly, you can also select between a traditional EV experience and a simulated 'engine,' where you get a tach that climbs as you push the tall pedal, and then 'shift' with the paddles. The way the car bucks as you 'shift' and stutters if you hit the 'rev limiter' is spectacularly realistic. As a fan of science and technology, I'm deeply impressed with Hyundai's achievement in creating what is essentially a drivable video game. That said, as a driving enthusiast and open-road appreciator, the 5 N kind of leaves me feeling like the kid in this meme: TheOdd1sOut/YouTube I know—one could argue that every modern performance car has a degree of this experience. With today's traction management tech and almost-everything-by-wire, how connected to the road are you, really, in anything built after about 2015? In principle, the idea of a manual mode that can only affect performance adversely, and forces the computer to behave exclusively for my amusement, feels kind of cringey, just like the sound piped in to give the motor an aural character. I'm glad Hyundai allows you to silence it with the push of a button. As long as you can work with a 200-ish mile range EV, this is an easy one to endorse. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is absolutely a compelling option if your car budget is in the $70,000 neighborhood. It's got a great combo of novelty, style, and serious speed. Personally, I would rather get a softer, cheaper EV for getting around and keep my 22-year-old manual Bimmer for fun. I can push that E46 and probably not even break the speed limit. Andrew P. Collins The weight of the wheel in your hand, the sigh of the straight six when you make a higher-rev shift, the momentum transfer through corners. It's cliché to say, but new hardware just doesn't hit the same, even if it does a perfect job simulating a transmission. The other side of that is something I touched on above—the speeds you can hit in this car without even thinking about it. I get that it's cool, and I certainly admire the capability from a technological standpoint. But at the risk of sounding crotchety, do we need mass-market vehicles that snap to 60 mph in under three seconds? The Ioniq 5 N didn't convert me to categorical EV superiority, but it impressed the hell out of me. There's no question this is a good car; it's just not the ultimate performance experience.
