Trump's top cabinet members say they are working to allow mining again in parts of northern Minnesota following a years-long ban.
This comes shortly after Senator Tina Smith declared victory in the fight to protect the Boundary Waters, after a provision granting Chilean mining giant Antofagasta permission to open copper nickel sulfide mining project was removed from the Senate version of the Republicans' "One Big Beautiful Bill."
But the next morning, Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins doubled down on the idea, declaring that she, along with Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum, are working to cancel the "mineral withdrawal in the Rainey [sic] River watershed on the Superior National Forest," which is federal land.
Smith retorted, 'Not this mine. Not this place. The Boundary Waters are too precious. See you in court."
In 2023, President Biden banned mining over approximately 225,000 acres of the Superior National Forest. The area in question is near the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, and environmental activists have sounded the alarm and raised concerns about potential pollution.
Proponents of mining say the move could bring new jobs to the state. Minnesota representative Pete Stauber applauded the move, saying allowing mineral mining will reduce dependence on China.
The so-called "One Big, Beautiful Bill" is now in the hands of the Senate, after being passed by the House of Representatives. President Trump has said he wants to sign the legislation by the Fourth of July.

The Budget Bill Is Creating a Republican Existential Crisis

The Republican budget bill, a $3.7 trillion tax cut packaged with $1.2 trillion in spending cuts, is deeply problematic legislation from almost any perspective — including those of its authors. The Congressional Budget Office has the details about how it will be expensive and ineffectual. But for Republicans, President Donald Trump's 'big, beautiful bill' is creating what amounts to an existential crisis. For half a century, Republicans have been committed to the policy of lower taxes to aid the economy — impervious to any evidence that tax cuts are inefficient and prohibitively expensive. At this point, to walk away from the bill is to abandon their economic raison d'etre.

Netherlands Defence Minister: NATO-wide 5% defence spend would be "historic"

Ruben Brekelmans, Netherlands Minister of Defence said they and their European partners support President Donald Trump's calls to encourage Iran to the negotiation table in order to "come to a sustainable solution". Speaking about the upcoming NATO meeting, he told Bloomberg's Oliver Crook "if we agree to 5% spending on core defence and defence-related matters, that would be a historic step" and said it would be of particular significance "if 32 allies in unity agree on this".
